TeachCancerBio — Effective teaching strategies for Cancer Biology
ID
871175
Beginn
29. Mär 2017
Ort
London, Großbritannien
Zusammenfassung
The molecular biology of cancer is a rapidly growing field which can be used to illustrate many fundamental principles of biology and drug development. Effective teaching in this area can increase students’ employability and help to develop key skills such as critical thinking, analytical competencies and creativity.

Towards ecologically-realistic genetic mosquito population control strategies for disease elimination
ID
873810
Termin
03. Apr 2017 - 04. Apr 2017
Ort
Newport Pagnell, Großbritannien
Zusammenfassung
Traditional chemical approaches to mosquito control are fast becoming less effective and acceptable. Worryingly, the implementation of effective novel genetic mosquito control strategies requires knowledge in mosquito behaviour, ecology and genetics that is currently very fragmentary. This extraordinary meeting of leading researchers in these fields will delineate strategic integrative research avenues addressing critical bottlenecks in implementing future vector control programmes. This is a residential conference, which allows for increased discussion and networking.

ProteinModel — Protein modelling and its applications in current science
ID
871130
Termin
06. Apr 2017 - 07. Apr 2017
Ort
Keele, Großbritannien
Zusammenfassung
The purpose of this training event is to familiarise participants with computational programmes to generate 3D models of proteins where no structural data is available. An emphasis will be placed on critically evaluating the usefulness of models and modelling in general for solving scientific problems. The course is aimed at early career scientists, such as PhD students and PostDocs, and established scientists who are interested in applying computational approaches to their research in the fields of protein science, molecular health, medicinal chemistry and structural biology. The interplay between lecture, practical work and discussion will ensure a stimulating and relaxed learning environment.

Of mice and mental health: facilitating dialogue between basic and clinical neuroscientists
ID
839118
Termin
24. Apr 2017 - 25. Apr 2017
Ort
London, Großbritannien
Zusammenfassung
Basic and clinical neuroscientists pioneering research into mental health disorders have much to learn from each other, but opportunities for interaction are limited. This meeting will bring these investigators together, highlighting commonalities in approach and facilitating dialogue between them, to aid in the development of new, fully translational models that will promote our understanding and treatment of mental health disorders. This event is intended for researchers in relevant fields and is free to attend. There are a limited number of places and registration is essential.

Now you hear it, now you don’t: the neuroscience of deafness
ID
894309
Beginn
15. Mai 2017
Ort
London, Großbritannien
Zusammenfassung
What makes hearing possible? Just the size of a pea, the cochlea of the inner ear allows you to detect anything from a pin drop to a car horn. Groups of cells within the cochlea, and in particular the outer hair cells act as biological microphones to amplify soundwaves and allow your brain to understand a whole world of sound. For an ageing population it is critical that the outer hair cells last as long as possible for without them we become progressively deaf. How are the cells maintained and, importantly, what do we still need to know to preserve them for a lifetime? Professor Ashmore will explore how these incredible biological hearing aids work and you can join the hunt for the molecules that power them.
