The IoT market in the country is currently highly fragmented and scattered. The drivers and technology solution (hardware, middleware and software) are based on real opportunities, which are rooted in the expansive reach that IoT will need to have to fulfil the expectations that it has set.The most difficult as well as the first major challenge is the various standards. They pose tangible and high barriers,considering the requirement of interoperability of disparate devices for IoT success. In other words, the industry must come to an agreement on IoT standards for devices, for interoperability protocols, and essentially, the data transfer security.

Confusion in communication standards is not conducive for market acceptance of new applications. Clarity in these standards is the key for the market to grow. There are lots of predictions for the exploding size of this market but unless there is a greater attempt to come together and work together, the big IoT boom may have to wait a little longer.

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) are vital to increase efficiency, safety, mobility and tackle Europe's growing emission and congestion problems. They can make transport safer, more efficient and more sustainable by applying information and communication technologies to all modes of transport. Moreover, the integration of existing technologies can create new services. The full potential of ITS can only be achieved if deployed worldwide. Research has a major role to play in developing and deploying key ITS technologies, and contributing to standardisation, interoperability between transport modes and countries, and cross-border continuity of services. On the other hand a deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems also faces some barriers, only some of which are technological. Deployment costs, funding restrictions that prevent from facilitating investments, privacy and liability concerns, uncertain demand, and lack of legislation have limited the roll-out of ITS implementation in a number of cases.

With the rapid innovation in sophisticated wireless communication technologies including 4G LTE-Advanced, fixed and mobile broadband WiMAX, 3G UMTS/CDMA and high-speed Wi-Fi, the past years have witnessed a dramatic growth of mobile multimedia applications, for example, Live Mobile Video, 3D Video Stream, Digital and Mobile TV, VoIP, etc. These content-rich multimedia applications consume a huge amount of network resources and create new challenging issues for heterogeneous wireless networks to satisfy the ever-increasing Quality-of-Experience (QoE) requirements. Furthermore, the traditional criteria for the measurements and provisioning of network performances are generally based on Quality of Service (QoS), which is defined in terms of network delivery capacity and resource availability such as bandwidth, jitter, throughput, transmission delay and availability. While it is widely accepted that QoS is inadequate for successfully and comprehensively evaluating the user-perceived quality of multimedia services over heterogeneous networks, as QoE is determined not only by QoS but also by the quality of multimedia content to be delivered.

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together industry and academic researchers to provide an up-to-date picture of the state-of-the-art research in the field of heterogeneous wireless communications and QoE provisioning. It is also intended to provide a forum to exchange varying beliefs and understandings of how to seamless integrate advanced wireless networking and adaptive multimedia processing for enabling evolution of the current wireless system toward future networks.

The annual International Conference on Ad Hoc Networks (AdHocNets) focuses on ad hoc networking technologies and their applications. An ad hoc network is a wireless system, in which nodes (mobile or static) are connected using wireless links and cooperate to self-organize into a network without the requirement for any infrastructures such as access point or base stations. In recent years, ad hoc networks have been attracting increased attention from the research and engineering communities. The distributed and multi-hop nature of ad hoc networking, as well as the highly dynamic topology of ad hoc networks due to node mobility, has introduced many formidable challenges such as scalability, quality of service, reliability and security, and energy constrained operations for the networks. Ad hoc networking covers a variety of network paradigms including mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), sensor networks, vehicular networks, underwater networks, airborne networks, underground networks, personal area networks, device-to-device (D2D) communications in 5G cellular networks, and home networks etc. It promises a wide range of applications in civilian, commercial, and military areas. The aim of the annual AdHocNets conference is to provide a forum that brings together researchers and engineers from academia, government laboratories, as well as industry to meet, network, exchange ideas and present their recent research work, and discuss future directions on all aspects of ad hoc networks. This year’s AdHocNets conference will be held in Niagara Falls, on September 28 - 29, 2017. The conference will consist of keynote speeches, technical sessions, and associated workshops. A workshop will be a half or one day event that focuses more on recent development and emerging applications in the area of ad hoc networking.
