Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Innovation

Materials informatics is an emerging field defined by the use of simulation tools combined with methods from data sciences and machine learning to better understand materials properties and design innovative materials. The models which are considered cover an extremely wide range, from Schrödinger’s equation, which describes matter at the (sub)atomistic scale, to the equations of continuum mechanics. Mathematical sciences play a key role in materials informatics, both to construct the databases used to train machine learning algorithms (since these databases are made of reference simulation results), and to harness them in order to extract the most relevant information. The aim of this program is bring together a diverse scientific audience, both between scientific fields (physical sciences, materials sciences, biophysics, etc) and within mathematics (mathematical modeling, numerical analysis, statistics and data analysis, etc), to make progress on key questions of materials informatics.

Since the global supply chain is currently concentrated in limited jurisdictions such as China and Australia, the need to diversify the supply of these critical materials creates significant opportunities for African countries. The African continent is endowed with some of the world’s largest REE deposits, and as such, it can play a vital role in meeting the growing demand for these critical materials. However, in order to maximize value, there is need to establish and develop capabilities along the value chain. The conference provides a platform for in-depth discussions on the global role of African REE deposits and is designed to stimulate debate on opportunities to grow the African rare earths industry. Overall, the conference seeks to explore the continent’s role in shaping the future of the REEs industry.

The Nuclear Materials Conference (NuMat) was created in 2012 in association with the Journal of Nuclear Materials to serve as an umbrella for international meetings on nuclear materials science related to fission and fusion reactors and the overall nuclear fuel cycle. Following on from NuMat 2022 in Ghent, Belgium, where over 500 delegates presented their work, NuMat 2024 will focus on broad topics of interest to the nuclear materials community centered around nuclear fuels, structural materials, and fundamental & applied radiation effects in metals, ceramics, polymers, and functional materials. For the 2024 meeting, three additional plenary sessions will cover the rapidly growing status of nuclear power in Southeast Asia. Two tracks will focus on fuels, two on structural materials, and one on radiation effects and damage in other types of nuclear materials. There will be seven plenary speakers, plus an opening plenary from the 2024 recipient of the Robert Cahn award, and a presentation from the best paper prize recipient from the Journal of Nuclear Materials.

ECIC 2024 will focus on the newest technologies in coke making, sintering, pelletizing, pyrolizing the biomasses and ironmaking (blast furnaces, direct reduction and carbon-based smelting processes). The 2050 goal of carbon neutrality and the related intensive efforts of the steel industry will significantly affect the technologies for iron ore reduction. In this perspective, the shortage of iron ores matching the requirement for direct reduction by gas and for melting in electric arc furnace makes important proposal of new technologies and devices that can ensure the carbon neutrality even for the coal based routes. This Congress will focus on technologies that can achieve such a goal improving the efficiency of the existing process, applying the devices that avoid a net emission of green house gases and to point out new routes based on exploitation of biomasses whose net emission is intrinsically neutral.
