15th ICOM-CC Wet Organic Archaeological Materials (WOAM) Working group Conference
Dear Colleagues and friends,

On behalf of the Joint Organising Committee, we are delighted to announce the 15th session of the ICOM CC WOAM working group to be held in Mainz, Germany at the “Leibniz Zentrum für Archäologie” from January 30 until February 3, 2023. Originally scheduled to take place in Kazan, Russia, but/and due to the tense political situation these days, our institute, which feels committed to the transfer and dissemination of conservation science knowledge in the field of archaeology and its neighbouring disciplines, steps in as an alternative venue for the conference now.

Registration is open.

In January 2023, you will be joining us at the start of a new era for our Institute, as after 170 years we will not only change our name but also move into a completely new, state-of-the-art location. And the WOAMs 15th interim meeting will be the first event of its kind here! In order to enable as many colleagues as possible to attend the lectures, a hybrid format will be offered, both safe in person and virtual attendance options.

In-person is extended to 15th December.

The conference program with its wide spanning range/its broad spectrum of paper and poster presentations aims to reflect current scholarship in the treatment of wet organic archaeological materials on highest standard . To open the dialog on current conservation issues, the panels range from preventive conservation, “best-practice” case studies, evaluation and assessment up to the sustainability of conservation materials. And of course, apart from professional exchange, opportunity will be given to get to know each other, to foster networking or to just jointly celebrate. An opening reception will be held, and tours through our brand new conservation laboratories as well as the Museum of Ancient Seafaring (which is currently under redesign) and Monrepos Archaeological Research Centre and Museum for Human Behavioural Evolution offered. Last but not least, a farewell evening will be the joint closing of the conference/festive conclusion of the joint conference. offered. Last but not least, a farewell evening will be the joint closing of the conference/festive conclusion of the joint conference.

We are indeed very much excited to celebrate with you the 15th interims Meeting of the WOAM working group, wishing all participants a fruitful academic exchange and a joyous time in Mainz!
