The Present and Future of Heavy Flavour and Exotic Hadron Spectroscopy
08. Mai 2023 - 02. Jun 2023 • München, Deutschland
Veranstalter:
MIAPbP - Munich Institute for Astro-, Particle and BioPhysics
Zusammenfassung:
A major goal in strong-interaction physics is to understand the nature of hadrons, which make up visible matter, and much research activity revolves around two fundamental questions: what are hadrons made up of and how does Quantum Chromo-dynamics (QCD), the strong-interaction component of the Standard Model, produce them? Although these questions are simple, the answers may not be. To address these questions, spectroscopy is a valuable and time-honored tool, as it enables us to understand the structure of mesons, baryons and exotics and how they are produced. In this context, the recent discovery of many new hadronic states, in particular the plethora of observed X, Y, Z states, is exciting, as these objects challenge the commonplace view of hadrons as either quark-antiquark or three-quark color-singlet states.

Differentiable and Probabilistic Programming for Fundamental Physics
05. Jun 2023 - 30. Jun 2023 • München, Deutschland
Veranstalter:
MIAPbP - Munich Institute for Astro-, Particle and BioPhysics
Zusammenfassung:
Domains such as cosmology, astrophysics, nuclear or particle physics rely heavily on the use of stochastic simulation to design data analyses and perform inference with respect to fundamental physics theories. With the advances of Deep Learning, Bayesian inference techniques, a new frontier has come into view that focuses on the extension of traditional scientific programming along the two distinct directions of differentiable programming and probabilistic programming. The former plays an important role in navigating high-dimensional spaces, while the latter can manifestly incorporate generative modeling and inference into scientific data analyses. Both promise to expand the science reach of data-intensive domains through, e.g., the integration of domain knowledge and symmetries into neural networks, algorithmic robustness, alignment of science and training optimization goals, uncertainty quantification, causal inference, and more complete inference. However, most production scientific pipelines are not yet compatible with these techniques and their widespread adoption would represent a deep change in the scientific software landscape. This program will provide the opportunity for researchers from Computer Science and Fundamental Physics to develop applications as well as strategies for integrating these paradigms into existing scientific workflows and to close the gap of what is theoretically possible and practically deployed.

Summer School — TQFTs and their connections to representation theory and mathematical physics
19. Jun 2023 - 23. Jun 2023 • Bonn, Deutschland
Veranstalter:
Hausdorff Center for Mathematics – hcm (Universität Bonn)
Zusammenfassung:
TQFTs (Topological quantum field theories) are of central importance in several areas of mathematics and physics. From a mathematical point of view (going back to Atiyah), a TQFT is a symmetric monoidal functor from the cobordism category to some symmetric monoidal category. It can thus be seen as a representation of a fundamental geometric category on a target category and thereby organizes interesting algebraic structures, e.g. representations of mapping class groups, in terms of cobordism categories. In recent years, TQFTs have appeared in many more mathematical areas such as algebraic topology (the study of 4-manifolds) or algebraic geometry (the study of moduli spaces). In this Hausdorff school we would like to explore various facets of TQFTs related to representation theory and mathematical physics. The interplay of representation theory and TQFT is, at least, two-fold: on the one hand side, representation theory provides input data to construct TQFTs. The most famous example is given by the quantum groups Uq(sl(2)) from which a modular tensor category and thus a Chern-Simons type TQFT can be constructed. On the other hand, TQFTs explain and organize structures appearing in representation categories, for example character varieties and their quantizations.

26. Jun 2023 - 28. Jun 2023 • München, Deutschland
Veranstalter:
MIAPbP - Munich Institute for Astro-, Particle and BioPhysics
Zusammenfassung:
We are happy to announce that the Differentiable and Probabilistic Programming for Fundamental Physics program includes a three day workshop. The workshop will contain talks about recent advancements in differentiable programming (DP) and probabilistic programming in the context of Physical Sciences. The workshop's diverse set of invited speakers will cover DP/ProbProg users and experts, toolmakers and authors of promising technologies. The workshop aims to explore the potential science impact of DP/ProbProg and to understand the steps towards, and challenges of, a successful implementation of these paradigms in fundamental physics.

Thermalization in Conformal Field Theories
10. Jul 2023 - 04. Aug 2023 • Mainz, Deutschland
Veranstalter:
Mainz Institute for Theoretical Physics (Germany)
Zusammenfassung:
Much of the recent work and progress in CFTs has been at zero temperature and it is highly desirable to extend this to finite temperature/finite size systems. This is not only dictated by the obvious relevance of finite temperature systems to the real world, but also by important theoretical questions. This includes fundamental issues regarding the thermalisation process of quantum systems, the holographic description of black holes in terms of finite temperature CFTs, and the intriguing relationship between thermal CFT partition functions and modular functions. Although disparate at first sight, these areas are converging to a common theme involving the study of thermal CFT correlation functions.

Particle & AMO physicists discussing quantum sensors and new physics 2023
28. Aug 2023 - 08. Sep 2023 • München, Deutschland
Veranstalter:
MIAPbP - Munich Institute for Astro-, Particle and BioPhysics
Zusammenfassung:
In order to maximize the impact of using quantum technology to probe fundamental interactions it is critical that each community improves its knowledge of the other discipline. We plan to bring in world experts in quantum technologies and particle physics in order to discuss how the recent progress in the precision front of quantum sensors could be used to search for new physics and study fundamental interactions. We plan to invite practitioners of both AMO and particle physics to sit together and learn from each other about the state of the art and to discuss how quantum sensors can be used to search for “old” and “new” types of Beyond the Standard Model physics.
