Recent technological advances have enabled the combination of neuroimaging and electrophysiological methods with NIBS. This course aims to offer a comprehensive overview of NIBS to educate young scientists on the state-of-the-art techniques, current trends, and challenges in the field.

Attendees will be exposed to the data-driven and multidisciplinary brain research approach of the HBP and have the opportunity to use the EBRAINS platform. The conference offers a space for extensive scientific dialogue, both intra- and interdisciplinary, among peers and faculty through a variety of discussion sessions, lectures, workshops & hands-on training sessions and social events. It will take place as an on-site event, organised and supported by the HBP Education Programme.

In recent years, it has been increasingly evident that the innate and adaptive immune system intricately interact with the non-immune resident CNS cells to preserve and/or modify the function of the brain and of the organism. Reciprocally, these non-immune resident cells can also alter immune responses. These symbiotic relationships are essential for tissue development, injury response, recovery to homeostasis, and may potentially extend to the health of the progeny. Trainees from wide scientific backgrounds, from genomics to basic immunology to electrophysiology and animal behavior will contribute to a richness of topics and approaches to understanding complex neuroimmune interactions.

While neuroimmunology has roots in neurology, neuroscience and immunology, the neuroimmune system has emerged as structurally and cellularly distinct from the peripheral immune system and in its ability to orchestrate a variety of developmental and homeostatic processes, as well as responses to injury, neurodegeneration, toxins and infections. Contrary to early studies that tended to categorize neuroimmune responses, including the entry of all peripheral immune cells, as pathologic, the modern view recognizes these processes may exert neuroprotective roles and contribute to normal central and peripheral nervous system functions. The goal of this meeting is to bring together speakers and attendees with an interest in neuroimmune mechanisms and interactions.

The field of brain stimulation continues to undergo phenomenal growth. Brain stimulation methods are rapidly transforming research on brain mechanisms, from the molecular to the behavioral, and offer new approaches to therapeutics for brain disorders. In many ways, the field of brain stimulation represents a paradigm shift, augmenting and sometimes supplanting the dominant psychopharmacological approaches of the past several decades.

This meeting will continue the integrative multidisciplinary approach of the prior meetings. Basic scientists will attend lectures by engineers and psychiatrists. Cognitive neuroscientists will mingle with neurosurgeons and brain modelling physicists. This fertile cross-disciplinary meeting will provide ample opportunity to discuss the science that is driving advances in this field.

EMBO Workshop — Mechanisms of neuronal remodelling

Developmental neuronal remodelling is essential for establishing functional nervous systems across species. Remodelling involves specific elimination of existing connections, typically followed by strengthening of surviving synapses or even axon regrowth to develop new, adult-specific connections. While altered remodeling has long been suspected of contributing to neuropsychiatric conditions, such as autism, schizophrenia, and ADHD, studies only recently established firm molecular similarities between such disorders and developmental remodeling. Moreover, the mechanisms involved in developmental remodelling appear to be reiterated in neurodegeneration and during regeneration. Despite these significant advances in the field, many important questions remain open and will be discussed at this meeting.

Understanding the human brain relies for a large part on work in animal models, which necessitates a careful cross-species comparison. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is particularly relevant in this regard as its function is poorly understood and potential cross-species differences remain highly debated. This workshop brings together experimental and computational scientists whose work allows a comparison of the anatomy and function of the PFC between species (in particular between humans, monkeys and mice). EBRAINS is uniquely suited to provide a platform to compare anatomy, physiology and behaviour between species, due to its atlases, numerous datasets, as well as the whole brain models from different species. The interactive format of the workshop will allow speakers as well as participants from largely separated fields to interact and discuss, which is expected to create novel insights as well as lead to more coherence and clarity in the relevant terminology, formats and important research directions in the field.

IUBMB-EMBO Focused Meeting on Emerging Concepts of the Neuronal Cytoskeleton — 6th Edition

Cytoskeletal dynamics is at the core of the most essential questions in cellular neurobiology, such as mechanisms of axon growth in development and in response to injury, or mechanisms of synapse formation and stabilization. It is also a key element of intracellular transport, which is critical for axonal development and neurotrophic signaling, but which is also disrupted in many, if not all neurodegenerative diseases. Consequently, the cytoskeleton in neurons is a promising and emerging target for the development of novel therapeutic approaches to treat neurodegenerative diseases and to promote axon regeneration after traumatic injury. Recent advances in imaging, genetics and cell-molecular biology have catalyzed exciting new progress. However, fundamental questions about how neuronal cytoskeletal assembly, functions and dysfunction is orchestrated remain unanswered. In this workshop we will explore the latest findings on this exciting topic and will address several features involved in cytoskeleton function in nerve cells such its role in trafficking and transport, neuronal polarity, axonal guidance and neuronal migration.

This symposium explores the many ways by which the genome is regulated in the brain in order to support neural function and plasticity. The extraordinary complexity of the brain places unique demands on the genome: How are several hundreds of different neural types specified by the same genetic instructions? Does the genome provide information that guides their connectivity? How is neural activity regulated by and how does it affect genome output? We will explore these fundamental questions from the standpoint of transcriptional regulation and chromatin-based processes, including but not limited to histone marks and variants, chromatin topology and folding, coding and noncoding RNAs, transposable elements, and DNA modifications. The conference aims to bring together neuroscientists and experts in genome regulation. It will cover a broad range of experimental approaches and model systems, from biochemistry to single-cell genomics, from worms to human organoids. Overall, the conference will address the impact of genome regulation on unique features of the brain — its excitable nature, exquisite response to the environment and parallel processing capacity — with the longer-term vision of understanding how defective genome regulation can give rise to brain disease.

The 2023 Gordon Conference on Neurotrophic Mechanisms in Health and Disease will cover the latest developments in neurotrophic factors, broadly defined as factors that have critical roles in neural circuit connectivity, synaptic plasticity, and behavior. Neurotrophic factors influence essentially all aspects of nervous system development; from neurogenesis to neuronal survival and death, to axon and dendrite growth and pruning, to synaptic plasticity and myelination, and to regulation of behavior. In recent years, it has become increasingly recognized that neurotrophin signaling mechanisms have critical roles in a range of human developmental disorders, adult psychiatric disorders, and in neurodegenerative diseases. Notably, several treatments that directly exploit knowledge of neurotrophin biology are now in human clinical trials for chronic pain, Alzheimer’s disease, and some forms of cancer including pediatric tumors.

A long-standing question in the neurobiology of learning is that of timescales. The brain can associate events that are separated by seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, or longer. Yet, the known biological mechanisms for inducing changes in the synaptic connections between neurons are driven by neural events that are separated by typically no more than a few tens or hundreds of milliseconds. This conference will convene scientists studying the molecular, cellular, and circuit-level mechanisms used by the brain to bridge the multiple timescales across which events play out in the experience of an individual. The goal will be to assemble an up-to-date understanding of the set of biological mechanisms available in the brain to support associative learning across different timescales. The conference's emphasis on biological mechanisms will complement and support the main program’s more computational focus, and encourage an integrated analysis of statistical learning spanning molecular, cellular, circuit, and behavioral-level phenomena.
