MKR — 9th International Conference on Meaning and Knowledge Representation
06. Jul 2022 - 08. Jul 2022 • Madrid, Spanien
Zusammenfassung:
Natural language understanding systems require a knowledge base provided with formal representations reflecting the structure of human beings' cognitive system. Although surface semantics can be sufficient in some other systems, the construction of a robust knowledge base guarantees its use in most natural language processing applications, thus consolidating the concept of resource reuse. This conference deals with meaning and knowledge representation in the context of natural language understanding from the perspective of theoretical linguistics, computational linguistics, cognitive science, knowledge engineering, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, text analytics or linked data and semantic web technologies.

Applied Linguistics; Cognitive Science; Computational Linguistics; Text/Corpus Linguistics

CADAAD2022 — 9th Critical Approaches to Discourse Analysis Across Disciplines (CADAAD) Conference
06. Jul 2022 - 08. Jul 2022 • University of Bergamo, Italien
Zusammenfassung:
CADAAD conferences are intended to promote current directions and new developments in cross-disciplinary critical discourse research from a critical-analytical perspective, deal with contemporary social, scientific, political, economic, or professional discourses and genres. Whilst we hope to receive abstracts across the usual wide range of topics and approaches, we also invite scholars to present papers and posters that that engage with this year’s conference theme: (Critical) Discourse Analysis and the (new?) normal. Norms, normalities, and normativities have undoubtedly been disturbed in recent years. Though ‘normal’ is a local, subjective, and fluid concept, norms are fundamental to collective endeavour and social practices and have important implications for ideology, power, and, of course, the construction of meaning in discourse. Equally, the destabilisation or disruption of norms gives rise to contestation over shared social values and normativities, as well as opportunities to galvanise new ways of being. The need for contemporary discourses to adjust to rapidly changing norms makes this an area of particular interest for (critical) discourse analysis makes this an area of particular interest for (critical) discourse analysis.

SS24 — Sociolinguistic Symposium 24. Inside and beyond binaries.
13. Jul 2022 - 16. Jul 2022 • University of Ghent, Belgien
Zusammenfassung:
Sociolinguistics Symposium is the world’s main gathering of sociolinguists internationally. This two-yearly event provides a unique opportunity and forum to develop and exchange ideas and research findings about language and society in its manifold connections and manifestations. From its beginnings as a small meeting in the UK in 1976, the tradition of Sociolinguistic Symposia has grown into the largest sociolinguistic networking event in the world. Attracting hundreds of participants and exhibitors, the Symposium is also a stimulating space for networking.

The conference theme is ''Inside and Beyond Binaries''. According to some, we live in increasingly polarized worlds. Which are the binary distinctions – cf. “marked/unmarked” - that can be noted in sociolinguistic enquiry, its history of developments, and how have these been instrumental in pushing the discipline’s social, linguistic and interventionist agendas forward? At the same time, critiques of binary thinking itself have been formulated at various stages: a logic of seemingly stable oppositions often stifles debate, contributes to the cultivation of insurmountable gaps, invites scientific reductionism, and hinders rather than foster inclusiveness. Presenters at SS24 are encouraged to address how the conference theme is relevant for their specific research niche, or sociolinguistics more generally. In addition to the conference theme, tradition has it that sociolinguistics symposia are committed to hosting papers and colloquia in any area of sociolinguistic enquiry.

02. Nov 2022 - 05. Nov 2022 • Quezon City, Philippinen
Veranstalter:
SOAS University of London, U.K. & University of The Philippines Diliman, Philippines.
Zusammenfassung:
The GLOCAL CALA 2022 theme “Symbolism and New Society” describes the need for symbolic representation in a rapidly changing Asia. As has been the case throughout a larger global society, Asian societies have sought increasingly rapid change, seeking none less than online spaces to contextualize and to legitimize the effects of this rapid change. Here, recent events have patently mediated the shift to online interaction, a shift which has thus intensified the development, and possibly, the invention, of a range of new symbolisms and symbolic clusters that now have a limited use in offline spaces. The GLOCAL CALA 2022 thus calls for renewed awareness and interpretations of Asian symbolisms in this new era, and asks that we seek new perspectives of these Asian complex symbolisms, in their global contexts. These interpretations increase in significance as the use of online virtual world texts and textual modes have now assumed an authoritative stance over the real world, possibly creating new realities and new real worlds that subvert our ideologies of those old real worlds. This shift to symbolisms required to reconceptualize new virtual and old real worlds in this current era, will surely motivate dialogue.

LITERATURE STUDIES '22 — XI. International Conference on Literature
18. Nov 2022 • Online, Türkei
Veranstalter:
DAKAM (Eastern Mediterranean Academic Research Center)
Zusammenfassung:
Literature Studies Conference explores literary works from various rich traditions of Africa, Asia, Europe, and North and South America while examining the literary worlds in terms of their relation to each other, their exchange with society, and their inner tension of past and contemporary. The lives of the authors, literature as a sector, translation issues, readership, and theoretical discussions are the themes also covered by the conference. The conference aims at setting up a comprehensive view of literature standing on a balance of the social and ideological aspects of written works and the detailed in-text analysis.

Classical works, as well as experimental texts in various genres, constitute the vivid map of world literature. Johann Wolfgang Goethe famously stated early in the 19th century, “National literature is now a rather unmeaning term; the epoch of world literature is at hand, and everyone must strive to hasten its approach.”

In the era of globalization, the internet, and social media, World Literature has not only been changed in terms of its production, distribution, and consumption, but also generated new ways of writing and historical inquiry. DAKAM’s Literature Conference invites scholars from all over the world to present their contemporary perspectives of literary texts of the past and present echoing the context they’ve been written.

Influence, Manipulation, and Seduction 2 - Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Persuasive Language
18. Nov 2022 - 19. Nov 2022 • virtual, Überall (Virtuelle Veranstaltung)
Veranstalter:
hosted by Tampere University and the University of Bayreuth
Zusammenfassung:
How can we get someone to behave in a way that they initially did not intend? And how can we change what our interlocutor thinks about a certain issue? We use language to ‘convince’, ‘persuade’, ‘cajole’, or ‘coax’ our counterpart into a certain behavior or state of mind. These are activities we engage in constantly, usually even without conscious thought. It is words that have the power to mold and influence opinions, attitudes, and behavior. This persuasive power of language is at the center of this symposium.

1st International Symposium on Grammatical Variation and the Construction of Meaning
22. Nov 2022 - 23. Nov 2022 • Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spanien
Zusammenfassung:
The 1st International Symposium on Grammatical Variation and the Construction of Meaning aims at becoming a forum for scientific exchange and advancement in the study of linguistic variation ‒ mainly at the morphosyntactic and discursive levels ‒ as a resource for speakers to construct and negotiate meanings in interaction. In this area of research there is an ever-growing awareness that traditional variationist approaches, based on the establishment of correlations between linguistic forms and geographical zones, social ascriptions of speakers or features of the situation, can hardly reach beyond the descriptive level and answer a number of fundamental questions: Why does variation exist in the first place? Are there really different ways of saying the same? Is it possible to elucidate regular or systematic connections between the inherent meanings of grammatical forms and their distribution according to extralinguistic factors? Are processes of diachronic change a mere effect of mechanical and/or sociocultural factors, or do they simultaneously entail the progressive replacement of some meanings with others?
