Forms and representations in phonology: in honour of Bob Ladd
23. Jun 2021 • Barcelona, Spanien
Zusammenfassung:
This workshop is dedicated to the work of Bob Ladd, one of the pioneers of Laboratory Phonology and the first president of the Association of Laboratory Phonology. The theme of the workshop reflects Bob's interest in the form and nature of phonological representations and their relation ''to the physical manifestations of speech and the cognitive processes that underlie them'' (in his words). His research on this broad theme has dealt with a number of topics; though perhaps the best known has been his contribution to intonational phonology and the relation between abstract phonological representations of tone and their phonetic manifestation, his research has also addressed the more general issue of the role of phonetic evidence in phonology, the problematic nature of systematic phonetics, the treatment of gradience, and duality of patterning. Contributions to this workshop, from researchers who have collaborated with Bob during his career and/or been strongly influenced by his research, will focus on these themes.

NAMED 2020: De/constructing motion events
01. Jul 2021 - 03. Jul 2021 • Paris, Frankreich
Zusammenfassung:
The expression of motion events is a multifaceted phenomenon that lies at the confluence of morphology, lexical semantics, syntax, discourse and pragmatics. Recent research has probed into its composite nature, revealing how it is underpinned by language-specific constellations of interacting factors (Beavers, Levin et al. 2010). The aim of this conference is to further explore these factors, with particular emphasis on the role of the verb and crosslinguistic comparison, while encouraging different approaches (Levin 1993, Aurnague 2011, Stosic 2019) to share their views on the matter.

LxGr2021 — Corpus Approaches to Lexicogrammar 2021
03. Jul 2021 • Online, Überall (Virtuelle Veranstaltung)
Zusammenfassung:
The focus of LxGr is the interaction of lexis and grammar. The focus is informed by Halliday’s view of lexis and grammar as “complementary perspectives” (1991: 32), and his conception of the two as notional ends of a continuum (lexicogrammar), in that “if you interrogate the system grammatically you will get grammar-like answers and if you interrogate it lexically you get lexis-like answers” (1992: 64).

eLex 2021: Electronic lexicography in the 21st century
05. Jul 2021 - 07. Jul 2021 • Brno, Tschechische Republik
Zusammenfassung:
The topic of eLex 2021 is going to be “post-editing lexicography”. Digital lexicography has progressed over the past 30 years up to the point where large parts of entries in a new dictionary (such as headword lists, inflections, translations or example sentences) may be drafted automatically from a sufficiently large and sufficiently annotated text corpus. This technological progress leads to new methodological approaches where most editorial work consists of post-editing of automatically created content – similarly to post-editing of machine translated texts.

RéAL2 2021 — Réseau d'Acquisition des langues secondes
05. Jul 2021 - 07. Jul 2021 • Toulouse, Frankreich
Zusammenfassung:
The term crosslinguistic influence, introduced by Michael Sharwood-Smith (1983), was suggested as an alternative to transfer, given the behaviorist connotations of the latter. Subsequently, generativist and cognitivist approaches rejected contrastive analysis and the idea of the influence of the L1 on an L2, and research focussed henceforth more on difficulties intrinsic to the L2, as well as L2 learners’ internal cognitive processes.

ISB13 — 13th International Symposium on Bilingualism
09. Jul 2021 - 14. Jul 2021 • Warsaw – online, Polen
Veranstalter:
University of Warsaw (Poland)
Zusammenfassung:
The conference theme, “Bilingualism in Flux”, presents bilingualism as a dynamic and multifaceted phenomenon existing on a continuum. The in flux part of the theme is a twofold concept. First, it is understood as relating to non-linguistic circumstances that foster not only diverse, but also transient bilingual communities throughout the world. Nowadays, new waves of migration influence the linguistic status quo and enrich existing environments. Second, it pertains to the very processes taking place in language, a dynamic entity prone to changes. The fluctuating circumstances entail linguistic consequences reflected in the development of the second and further languages, cross-linguistic influence, language attrition, incomplete acquisition, and maintenance of heritage languages. Finally, the conference leitmotif highlights not only the local changes presently taking place in Poland, but also the country’s linguistic heritage.

DN27 — Language Ideologies and Political Discourse
12. Jul 2021 - 14. Jul 2021 • Milton Keynes (Virtual), Großbritannien
Zusammenfassung:
Ideologies regarding the social value of languages and discourses are contested, especially in times of political polarisation. Whether it be political rhetoric valorising certain languages over others in social media messages of populist leaders, activism promoting the revitalisation of minoritised languages or the hegemony of colonial languages in academic publishing, we can observe how language ideologies are constructed, and how they permeate every public domain. With this conference, we aim to explore the intersections between language ideology and political discourse, understanding both notions in their broadest terms, and to find tactical solutions to prevent a language ideological meltdown of political discourse; i.e. a politicisation of essential understandings of language as belonging to specific people and not to others. The conference thus aims to open up a critical space in which we can explore ideological discourses that make the indexical links between language and politics meaningful, aiming, ultimately, to reposition ourselves and our research within the very same political discourse that we investigate.

LFG21 welcomes work within the formal architecture of Lexical-Functional Grammar as well as typological, formal, and computational work within the 'spirit of LFG' as a lexicalist approach to language employing a parallel, constraint-based framework. The conference aims to promote interaction and collaboration among researchers interested in non-derivational approaches to grammar, where grammar is seen as the interaction of (perhaps violable) constraints from multiple levels of structuring, including those of syntactic categories, grammatical relations, semantics and discourse.

MWE 2021 — 17th Workshop on Multiword Expressions
05. Aug 2021 - 06. Aug 2021 • Bangkok, Thailand

Modelling and processing MWEs for NLP has been the topic of the MWE workshop organised by the MWE section of SIGLEX in conjunction with major NLP conferences since 2003. Although much progress has been made in the field, MWE processing in end-user NLP tasks is currently under-explored, and most studies still introduce MWEs as future work. Nonetheless, there are recent studies in which MWEs gained particular attention in end-user applications, including machine translation (Zaninello & Birch 2020), text simplification (Kochmar et al. 2020, Liu & Hwa 2016), language learning and assessment (Paquot et al. 2019, Christiansen & Arnon 2017), social media mining (Maisto et al. 2017), and abusive language detection (Zampieri et al. 2020, Caselli et al. 2020).

ACL 2021 — 2nd International Workshop on Computational Approaches to Historical Language Change 2021
05. Aug 2021 - 06. Aug 2021 • Bangkok , Thailand
Zusammenfassung:
Human language changes over time, driven by the dual needs of adapting to ongoing sociocultural and technological development in the world and facilitating efficient communication. In particular, novel words are coined or borrowed from other languages, while obsolete words slide into obscurity. Similarly, words may acquire novel meanings or lose existing meanings. This workshop explores these phenomena by bringing to bear state-of-the-art computational methodologies, theories and digital text resources on exploring the time-varying nature of human language.

CASE — Challenges and Applications of Automated Extraction of Socio-political Events from Text @ACL-IJCNLP
05. Aug 2021 - 06. Aug 2021 • Bangkok, Thailand
Zusammenfassung:
Today, the unprecedented quantity of easily accessible data on social, political, and economic processes offers ground-breaking potential in guiding data-driven analysis in social and human sciences and in driving informed policy-making processes. The need for precise and high-quality information about a wide variety of events ranging from political violence, environmental catastrophes, and conflict, to international economic and health crises has rapidly escalated (Porta and Diani, 2015; Coleman et al. 2014). Governments, multilateral organizations, local and global NGOs, and social movements present an increasing demand for this data to prevent or resolve conflicts, provide relief for those that are afflicted, or improve the lives of and protect citizens in a variety of ways. For instance, Black Lives Matter protests[1] and conflict in Syria[2] events are only two examples where we must understand, analyze, and improve the real-life situations using such data.

Workshop at ESSLLI 2021 — Computational and Experimental Explanations in Semantics and Pragmatics
09. Aug 2021 - 13. Aug 2021 • Utrecht, Niederlande
Zusammenfassung:
The field of natural language semantics has undergone what some refer to as an ‘experimental turn’ and is arguably currently undergoing a ‘computational turn’. By expanding the toolbox available to the semanticist, these two turns have the effect of expanding the phenomena that can be explained and the varieties of semantic explanation that can be offered.

SSML2 — Small-Scale Multilingualism Conference 2
16. Aug 2021 - 18. Aug 2021 • Helsinki (online), Finnland
Zusammenfassung:
As the world has become more global in unprecedented ways, the ability to communicate in multiple languages has become a prized characteristic. Multilingualism has, however, been the majority experience for most of human history. The second ever Small-Scale Multilingualism (SSML2) conference aims to recentre the notion of multilingualism as a natural and typical state of human societies and aims to shift multilingualism into the centre of the academic field of linguistics. We want to think more expansively about what constitutes SSML, and focus on the term “small-scale” as a means to “pay attention to detail”, and “take a look at individuals and localised communities”. Multilingualism is simultaneously a description of an environment and individuals who make up the tapestry of many modes of communicating, including spoken and signed languages. It is in this spirit of inclusion and attention to individuals that we seek funding to experiment with innovative forms of conferencing that would expand accessibility to people from multiple locations, and with diverse needs.

DOING 2021 — International Workshop on Intelligent Data – From Data to Knowledge
24. Aug 2021 • Tartu, Estland
Zusammenfassung:
Text are important sources of information and communication in diverse domains. The intelligent, efficient and secure use of this information requires, in most cases, the transformation of unstructured textual data into data sets with some structure, and organized according to an appropriate schema that follows the semantics of an application domain. Indeed, solving the problems of modern society requires interdisciplinary research and information cross-referencing, thus surpassing the simple provision of unstructured data. There is a need for representations that are more flexible, subtle and context-sensitive, which can also be easily accessible via consultation tools and evolve according to these principles. In this context, consultation requires robust and efficient processing of requests, which may involve information analysis, with quality, consistency, and privacy preservation guarantees. Knowledge bases can be built as these new generation infrastructures which support data science queries on a user-friendly framework and are capable of providing the required machinery for advised decision-making.

AIMM5 — 5th American International Morphology Meeting
27. Aug 2021 - 29. Aug 2021 • Columbus, OH (Online), Vereinigte Staaten
Zusammenfassung:
The theme of the conference will be Morphological Theory and Typology. Languages display remarkable diversity in how and to what extent they make use of morphology. Because of this, it is crucial to explore the morphological structures of a wide variety of languages, especially those that are understudied. This is necessary to ensuring that the morphological theories that we develop are grounded in the empirical data that we observe. Conversely, linguistic theory and computational modeling inform our understanding of morphological diversity by allowing hypotheses about underlying causes of typological distributions to be tested. While morphological typology and morphological theory have not always been in close dialogue, we view such dialogue as important to the advancement of both fields. The conference theme is designed to highlight work that brings understudied and otherwise diverse languages to bear on morphological theory, and theory to bear on morphological typology. We encourage submissions reflecting different theoretical and methodological approaches, the latter including but not limited to fieldwork, corpus methods, and computational modeling.

The Once and Future English
10. Mär 2022 - 12. Mär 2022 • London, Großbritannien
Veranstalter:
University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN, USA
Zusammenfassung:
This conference begins with the notion that English is today used by about 1.5 billion people, less than a third of whom speak it as their first language. This minority-majority reversal has significantly impacted the grammatical characteristics of English, the demographics of the Anglophone population, the domains in which English is used, and attitudes towards the language, which has been described both as a venue for increased global communication and as a cultural and economic predator. The history of the language is being rewritten as well, from one defined by conventional periodization and the triumph of English as a Germanic language, to one that has reoriented the historical and contemporary significance of the language’s traditional homelands. The Once and Future English asks the question: How will English’s present and past look to future speakers?
