Philosophia Naturalis: Making Sense of Relations and Realities
22. Feb 2023 - 25. Feb 2023 • Denver, CO, Vereinigte Staaten
Veranstalter:
Institute for Studies in Pragmaticism, Texas Tech University
Zusammenfassung:
The various recent approaches to quantum worlds appear to be reaching a consensus: that spacetime is quantized, relational, and emergent out of a fundamentally new, pre-geometric order that exists “before” and “below.” Conventional reality, then, emerges as an explicate order from more fundamental, relational pre-geometric and pre-quantum implicate order(s), which exist beyond conventional science and philosophy. This pre-geometric implicate order has the potential to answer the two most fundamental questions in all of the philosophia naturalis: what is the origin of spacetime and the fields within it, and ultimately, why is there something rather than nothing? Hence, the sub-Planckian order promises profound consequences, not just for foundational (meta)physics, but also for cosmic evolution in quantum cosmology and human knowledge of it.

Mary Somerville Lecture — The Poet and the Physicist: Muriel Rukeyser's biography of Josiah Willard Gibbs
21. Mär 2023 • ICMS Edinburgh, Großbritannien
Veranstalter:
The International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS)
Zusammenfassung:
Mary Somerville (1780-1872) was an eminent Scottish scientist of the 19th century. She made important contributions in mathematics and astronomy, such as her paper 'On the magnetizing power of the more refrangible solar rays' in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society in 1826. She was one of the first two women to be elected to the Royal Astronomical Society in 1835 (the other was Caroline Herschel). Her outstanding science was inextricable from her powers of exposition as might be seen in her beautiful book On the Connexion of the Physical Sciences (1834), a best-seller that went through many editions and is often regarded as the first 'popular science' book. Remarkably, the third edition of the book (1836) and subsequent ones contained a discussion, based on tables of observation, about the possibility of an unknown planet perturbing Uranus. This led to the subsequent precise prediction of the position of Neptune by John Couch Adams in 1845.

This lecture series for the general public is on high-level topics at the interface of mathematics and other domains of inquiry commemorates the work and life of Mary Somerville.

Workshop — Seismic Reflection Centennial: Mapping the Earth Beneath Our Feet
12. Apr 2023 - 14. Apr 2023 • Norman and Stillwater, Oklahoma, Vereinigte Staaten
Veranstalter:
Society of Exploration Geophysicists
Zusammenfassung:
This workshop will feature a historical documentary on the early events and pioneers; showcase recent developments and advances in seismic acquisition, processing and interpretation; and moreover, suggest innovative pathways into the future of seismic. Because of the wide applications of the seismic method, the event will invite participation from industry, academia, and government agencies. The three-day event — based at the Oklahoma State University (OSU) campus in Stillwater — will include technical presentations at the University of Oklahoma (OU) in Norman (Day 1) and OSU (Day 2) as well as a field trip to historic sites (Day 3). The field trip will visit the site(s) where the first seismic reflection experiments were conducted in Belle Isle and the Arbuckle Mountains, along with some key geologic outcrops.
