Gordon Research Seminar — Radiation and Climate
22 jul 2023 - 23 jul 2023 • Bates College, Lewiston, États-Unis
Résumé:
Humanity is in the midst of a natural experiment where our actions are altering Earth’s climate in ways that are making human and natural systems less resilient. Climate science provides knowledge, through observations and model predictions, capable of reducing the impacts of climate change. The rapid integration of new advances into societal decision making as well as accelerating progress in key areas are required to maximize the societal benefit of climate science. The urgency required in these areas points to the need to more closely link the frontiers of climate science with societal impacts and motivates the theme of the 2023 Gordon Research Seminar in Radiation and Climate “Science to Inform Climate Sustainability and Resilience.” The goal of this seminar is to identify and discuss frontier science topics where advances in process understanding contain exceptional value to inform societal resilience to a range of climate change impacts including temperature extremes on land and in the ocean, droughts, floods, sea level rise and coastal inundation, wildfire and air quality, food security, clean energy, poverty, infrastructure and water quality.

TiPES Final Meeting
03 sep 2023 - 08 sep 2023 • CENTRO DE CIENCIAS DE BENASQUE PEDRO PASCUAL, Espagne
Résumé:
There is rising concern that several subsystems of the Earth may respond highly nonlinearly at critical future levels of anthropogenic forcing; these levels have recently been associated with tipping points (TPs). It is paramount to identify safe operating spaces for humanity and the planet in terms of these critical forcing levels in order to prevent harmful transitions to alternative, undesirable states of the Earth system. The mechanisms leading to such abrupt transitions are only partly understood, and further research in this regard is urgently needed. State-of-art Earth System Models appear to respond too smoothly at TPs and have difficulties in simulating abrupt transitions that occurred in the planet’s history. TiPES is a Horizon 2020 (H2020) funded project that has run from September 2019. Its main object is to better quantify the tipping elements that are present in the climate system and to ensure that climate projections also include these. In this final meeting, the main conclusions and results of the project will be presented, and interactions with other EU H2020 projects tackling similar problems will be highlighted.

Organisateur:
MDPI
Résumé:
The 5th International Electronic Conference on Remote Sensing with a focus on “Advances in experimental and theoretical studies of terrestrial atmosphere and underlying surface” will be held on 7-21 November 2023. The main aim of the conference is to present recent advances in experimental and theoretical studies of atmosphere (trace gases, atmospheric aerosol, cloudiness, precipitation, temperature, and pressure) and underlying surface with a focus on cryosphere, which has nonlinear impacts on climate change trends and the warming of our planet. The conference will promote the use of remote sensing and geospatial information technology and make it possible to exchange innovative approaches in the area of remote sensing.

Résumé:
Our workshop on Climate Applications of Layering will bring together specialists in theory, numerical modelling, laboratory experiments and observations to address questions including how do layers and interfaces form in various settings, what factors control the strength of the interface between layers, what factors result in the erosion of the interface, and how strong must an interface be to resist being eroded?
