Understanding Biology Through Structure 2017
ID
865261
Dates
13 May 2017 - 17 May 2017
Location
Santa Fe, NM, United States
Abstract
Structural biology is entering an exciting new phase. Over 10,000 new structures are being determined every year. Powerful new cryo-EM and X-ray laser approaches promise to vastly improve the ease of structure determination for large molecules and complexes and to provide a time-resolved view of molecular machines at work. With these tools and biochemical assays, ever more rapid progress is being made in understanding key biological processes and how they can be manipulated. This symposium will bring together students and senior investigators developing new methods for structural analysis, determining new structures, and using structures to understand biology. The symposium will encourage and facilitate discussion and interactions between junior and senior scientists. The symposium will feature about 40 talks and 100 poster presentations.

HSC19 — 19th HERCULES Specialized Course on Quantitative Imaging with X-rays and Neutrons
ID
869870
Dates
15 May 2017 - 19 May 2017
Location
Grenoble, France
Abstract
Imaging techniques have seen an intense development using neutron and synchrotron radiation over the past 20 years, with brighter sources and more efficient detectors. Beyond experimental aspects, the data analysis workflow is essential for an efficient and objective interpretation of experimental data. This school will discuss the creation and use of images, with the help of “best practice” and “bad practice” examples, from the definition of experimental parameters, the reconstruction algorithms, to data visualization. Techniques covered include: two and three-dimensional imaging, time-resolved experiments, absorption, phase-contrast, scanning microscopy, coherent diffraction imaging and ptychography…

The school will include one poster session, one day of practicals and one day of tutorials focusing on data analysis.

EMBL Course: Fundamentals of Widefield and Confocal Microscopy and Imaging
ID
834603
Dates
19 Jun 2017 - 23 Jun 2017
Location
Heidelberg, Germany
Abstract
Light microscopy is the most widely used form of microscopy for life science research. The correct handling of the microscope and optimising image quality (e.g. contrast, resolution) as well as experimental design according to different applications are crucial to obtain the best results.

This course will provide the participants with an overview about the basics of microscopy (light and optics, contrast techniques and imaging). The confocal part will include multicolor, 3D- and time lapse imaging as well as spectral imaging, photobleaching (FRAP, FLIP, FLAP) and photoactivation techniques. Basic image analysis tools including measurement functions, colocalisation and spectral unmixing as well as 3D/4D image processing will be covered, both in theory and practice. The course will combine lectures with intense daily hands-on practices followed by discussions.

EMBL Course: Super Resolution Microscopy
ID
834667
Dates
10 Jul 2017 - 15 Jul 2017
Location
Heidelberg, Germany
Abstract
This advanced course on fluorescence super-resolution microscopy will cover the theory and practical application of current super-resolution microscopy techniques to biological questions. The participants will have sufficient time to use current super-resolution microscopes for Localisation Microscopy (e.g. dSTORM /GSDIM) and STED Microscopy with samples prepared during the course. At the end of the course, the participants will be able to plan an experiment using super-resolution microscopy, acquire high quality data at the microscope and analyse the images with state-of-the-art computational methods. Invited guest researchers together with experts from the EMBL and Leica Microsystems will ensure that all aspects are covered in depth.
