Keystone Symposia: Malaria – From Innovation to Eradication
ID
833322
Termin
19. Feb 2017 - 23. Feb 2017
Ort
Kampala, Uganda
Zusammenfassung
The evidence base and research agenda for malaria elimination and eradication are fast-evolving. Of foremost concern is the threat of resistance of the mosquito to pyrethroid insecticides and emerging data showing multi-drug resistance in Southeast Asia. An evolving area, with much to be understood, is the epidemiology of sub-microscopic infections and how they fuel onward transmission. There is also a lot of progress; for example, in the development pipeline there are candidates for a single-dose cure that can also provide protection and block transmission, and there are novel classes of insecticides. Finally, in implementation science, there is plenty to examine, from mass drug administration of anti-malarials to re-purposing ivermectin to reduce residual transmission. This Keystone Symposia meeting examines the scientific progress being made toward the goals of eliminating and eradicating malaria, from biological challenges and discoveries, to the development of the next generation of tools, to potentially transformative strategies to eliminate malaria. The ultimate goal of the meeting is to provide a unique and needed space for the malaria community to challenge hypotheses and share emerging data and insights from the different disciplines in a retreat-like setting where scientists can network, think creatively and exchange ideas. For the sustainability needed to meet the challenge of eradicating malaria, fostering these fruitful exchanges and lasting scientific partnerships is absolutely critical.

Keystone Symposia: Viral Immunity – Mechanisms and Consequences
ID
833290
Termin
19. Feb 2017 - 23. Feb 2017
Ort
Santa Fe, New Mexico, Vereinigte Staaten
Zusammenfassung
A clear understanding of the mechanisms of host immunity to virus infection will guide efforts to design better treatments for some of the most devastating diseases of humanity. The fields of virology and immunology often convene their own specialized meetings. However, each of these fields has matured to the point where the most transformative advances are likely to arise from cross-disciplinary insights, rather than from continued progress in an isolated area. This meeting will foster new interactions and generate new ideas by assembling international experts in the areas of evolutionary perspectives on the host-virus relationship, innate immune detection and control of endogenous and exogenous viruses, memory cell control of viruses at mucosal surfaces, immunological consequences of prior viral exposure, and new approaches to vaccines and therapeutics. This comprehensive and inclusive approach should spur new thinking. For example, a solution to the medically important issue of chronic viral infection and immune exhaustion may emerge from a better understanding of the history of these viruses and how they have shaped the immune response and vice versa over evolutionary time. Similarly, a rational approach to vaccine design must be rooted in the innate immune mechanisms by which cells detect and respond to virus infection. This Keystone Symposia meeting offers a unique opportunity to bring about the next advances in viral immunity through cross-disciplinary interactions.

Aging — 2nd Interventions in Aging Conference: Understanding Mechanisms & Compressing Morbidity in Aging Humans
ID
842950
Termin
02. Mär 2017 - 05. Mär 2017
Ort
Cancun, Mexiko
Zusammenfassung
A plethora of genetic, dietary and pharmacological interventions can extend healthy lifespan in laboratory animals, and can delay or ameliorate diverse aging-related diseases. Many of the signalling pathways involved are evolutionarily conserved, and are starting to be implicated in human aging. This raises the intriguing possibility of performing preventative medicine against the chronic diseases of our time by targeting the main risk factor for all of them, namely aging. Two important current challenges in the field are (1) to understand the downstream pathways by which longevity interventions combat age-related loss of function and pathology, and (2) to translate the findings into the extension of human healthspan.

Zusammenfassung
Traditional chemical approaches to mosquito control are fast becoming less effective and acceptable. Worryingly, the implementation of effective novel genetic mosquito control strategies requires knowledge in mosquito behaviour, ecology and genetics that is currently very fragmentary. This extraordinary meeting of leading researchers in these fields will delineate strategic integrative research avenues addressing critical bottlenecks in implementing future vector control programmes. This is a residential conference, which allows for increased discussion and networking.

Zusammenfassung
Africa have not yet recovered from the epidemic caused by the big three disease HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria and yet emerging and re-emerging disease pathogens such as Ebola, Nodding disease, ZIKA, SARS, and others are advancing their strategy to devastate and kill its victims. To be in control, we must be able to pilot and develop a system that can mobilize a competent team to predict and respond to any outbreak in any African region. This will help to prevent a repeat of the scale of death by Ebola in West Africa. This conference therefore will bring together the best brains in Africa and our friends from other continents to discuss the way forward with respect to resource mobilization capacity building and so on.

The Université de Montréal and the Montreal Clinical Research Institute (IRCM) are proud to announce that they will be hosting the 1st World Health Summit (WHS) of the M8 Alliance to be held in North America. The world leaders in global health will be attending this prestigious event, including over 800 researchers, doctors, industry leaders, decision-makers, government members and civil society actors from around the world. Based on the theme of “Health and Healthcare Delivery in Pluralistic Societies,” this interdisciplinary event will focus on the question of human diversity in the practice, education, research and public policy pertaining to health. In pluralistic societies that welcome diversity, such as ours, many factors will impact health and the provision of healthcare, including globalization, immigration, social and economic inequalities, lifestyle, and culture. We believe that it is our mission, as scholars, to turn our attention to this important phenomenon and to analyze it in depth.

The growing awareness that racial/ethnic minority groups experienced inferior health outcomes when compared to the overall population led to an increased focus and interest from the U.S. Congress and Federal Government in implementing actions focused on addressing health disparities in this country. Consequently, there has been an increased multidisciplinary research effort in addressing problems associated with health disparities especially on diseases of the cardiovascular system. In recognition of the need to put the issue of health disparities front and center of health care delivery in the US, this SRC will focus on a multi-disciplinary approach to addressing health disparities and inequities in the United States.
