Genome sequencing has revealed an enormous biosynthetic capacity for microbial natural products, only a small fraction of which are represented in fermentation-based screens. Synthetic biology tools are being developed to translate the encoded diversity of microbial biosynthetic pathways into novel compounds and natural products. The Synthetic Biology of Natural Products conference will blend these disciplines with the goal of generating new platforms, tools and technologies to capture, manipulate and engineer natural product genes and pathways. Converting this vast untapped (meta)genomic diversity into novel chemical leads for biomedical and agricultural applications will require breakthroughs in design, scale and biologics that currently limit the field.

Abstract
The successful implementation of area-wide pest management programmes integrating sterile insects with other control technologies against a number of key plant, veterinary, and medical insect pests is a peaceful application of nuclear technology. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have over the last 50 years played, and will continue to play, a critical role in supporting their Member States in the development and application of these environmentally friendly pest management methods.

The concept of area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM), in which the total population of a pest in an area is targeted, is increasingly being considered for related genetic, biological and other pest suppression technologies. Insect movement, occurring sometimes over long distances, is generally underestimated. As a consequence, most conventional pest management is implemented locally in uncoordinated action against only segments of a pest population, resulting very often in unsustainable control. On the other hand, an AW-IPM approach involves a preventive rather than a reactive strategy, whereby all individuals of the pest population are targeted in time and space, resulting in more cost-effective and sustainable pest management.

Abstract
The integrated pest management (IPM) has an important role in sustainable agriculture and quality food production by providing maximum economic yields to the farmer, while improving or maintaining the production site and protecting the environment. The procedures to improve economic yields while reducing inputs include: the integration of pesticides with cultural techniques for disease control; and biological, behavioral, and environmental controls of pests such as weeds. Especially biological and biotechnological control methods have a vital importance as the alternatives to chemical control in integrated pest management. Biotechnology promises to have a major impact on IPM through the use of recombinant DNA techniques to genetically engineer microbes for the control of diseases, insects, and weeds, and to generate plants that resist insects, pathogens, and herbicides. Global pesticide use has grown over the past 20 years to 3.5 billion kg/year, amounting to a global market worth $45 billion. The external costs of pesticides are $4–$19 (€3–15) per kg of active ingredient applied, suggesting that IPM approaches that result in lower pesticide use will benefit, not only farmers, but also wider environments and human health.

Total Food 2017 is the fifth in a series of conferences focused on the sustainable exploitation of agri-food co-products and related biomass, thereby helping to minimise waste. Abstract
The FoodMicro 2018 Conference will take place in the Henry Ford Building of the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany, from 3rd to 6th September 2018. The field of food microbiology has changed rapidly in the last decades and new methods help scientists all over the world to master the challenges of the 21st century. Socioeconomic changes necessitate changes in food production, supply, and handling. Previously unknown problems concerning spoilage and transmission of pathogens occur worldwide. Moreover, functional and novel foods gain importance and probiotic bacteria are in the focus of international research.

To merge these different research areas “Biodiversity of Foodborne Microbes” has been chosen as the common theme of the conference. Participants will be offered an excellent programme, demonstrating scientific diversity and subject depth. This will be achieved by utilizing the scientific expertise of the selected national and international committees, including the members of the International Committee on Food Microbiology and Hygiene (ICFMH).
