The purpose of this training event is to familiarise participants with computational programmes to generate 3D models of proteins where no structural data is available. An emphasis will be placed on critically evaluating the usefulness of models and modelling in general for solving scientific problems. The course is aimed at early career scientists, such as PhD students and PostDocs, and established scientists who are interested in applying computational approaches to their research in the fields of protein science, molecular health, medicinal chemistry and structural biology. The interplay between lecture, practical work and discussion will ensure a stimulating and relaxed learning environment.

Royal Society discussion meeting organised by Professor George Lorimer FRS, Professor Tom McLeish FRS and Professor Amnon Horovitz. Many cellular processes are facilitated by multi-subunit, motor- proteins. These biological machines exploit allostery and the formation of distinct conformational states resulting from cycles of ligand binding and release, driven by the hydrolysis of ATP. We aim to discuss the latest experimental and computational approaches, so as to enhance our understanding of the structural changes underlying the operation of these molecular machines.

We will discuss the analyses of transcriptomic data, experiments for linking ncRNAs sequences and structure to functions, whilst addressing approaches to bridge the gap between the large number of ncRNAs identified in various species, and the lack of well-defined functions for ncRNAs.

Recent years have seen great progress in assigning specific DUBs to biological pathways and in understanding the structural underpinning of their activity, specificity and regulation. Moreover, DUBs are emerging as a novel class of druggable targets in cancer, neurodegeneration, infection and inflammation. This conference will provide the first international meeting dedicated to this class of enzymes, encompassing structural, physiological and translational aspects. It will bring together international leaders in the field together with early stage researchers, in a setting and atmosphere aimed at fostering collegiality and collaboration. In addition to invited speakers, a number of talks will be selected from the submitted abstracts.

This conference focuses on the biology of protein kinases and phosphorylation signaling. Among FASEB’s longest-running SRCs, it brings together a dynamic international community of junior investigators, trainees, and established researchers from a field that is achieving startling new insight and medical breakthroughs. The program will link detailed understanding of protein structure and biochemical mechanism to control of large-scale processes like the cell division cycle, cell morphogenesis, and metabolism. This SRC will explore the field’s latest research, which is revealing surprising mechanisms of regulation, previously unappreciated subcellular organization, logic of pathways that coordinate diverse intracellular systems. Importantly, derangement of kinase signaling underlies disease, including cancer and diabetes. Drugs targeting kinases and phosphorylation have achieved dramatic cures and promise more, and the conference has consistently offered a robust platform for clinically important work.
