“Some Like It Hot!” A Journey from the Hot IGrM to the Multiphase CGM
22 avr 2024 - 17 mai 2024 • Garching, Allemagne
Organisateur:
MIAPbP - Munich Institute for Astro-, Particle and BioPhysics an institute of the Excellence Cluster ORIGINS
Résumé:
The exchange of mass, energy, and metals between galaxies, their surrounding circum-galactic medium (CGM), and the gas permeating halos at larger scale represents a fundamental part of the modern astrophysics. Both components still elude our knowledge. Indeed, we are very far from having a census of the CGM properties in the bulk of the galaxy population. Furthermore, the halo gas is well known at large scale only in the most massive halos of our Universe, the galaxy clusters (intra-cluster medium, ICM), but it is still very elusive in the bulk of the virtualized halo population at the group mass scale (Intra-group medium IGrM).

With the advent of instrument such as eROSITA, XRISM and JWST, and the enormous variety of results collected by Alma, MUSE, KCWI and LOFAR, it is time to review the state of the art of this research field. The final goal of this workshop is to fill the knowledge gap and review in an unbiased way all the key aspects of the baryon cycle: from the hot IGrM enclosed in the bulk of the virtualized halo population, to the CGM at hundreds of kpc from the central galaxy, and down to the main mechanisms in act at the galaxy center able to trigger the baryonic exchange.

Conference — Resurgence and Modularity in QFT and String Theory
06 mai 2024 - 10 mai 2024 • Firenze , Italie
Organisateur:
Galileo Galilei Institute
Résumé:
Modularity is a particularly powerful symmetry with many applications in theoretical physics and mathematics, in particular quantum field theory and string theory. Resurgence is a general framework for advanced asymptotics which effectively unifies perturbative and non-perturbative physics via an intricate network of algebraic relations known as Ecalle’s bridge equations. Modularity and resurgence overlap strongly in the goal of exploring non-perturbative completions of perturbative data, leading to profound new insights into the connection between weak coupling and strong coupling, and in the study of dualities, black holes and quantum gravity. The goal of this GGI Workshop is to bring together experts from these two frontier areas in theoretical and mathematical physics to foster further interaction between different scientific communities and to develop novel strategies to address truly significant problems.
Sujets:
Focus topics include: - Modular graph forms and the low-energy expansion of string theory. - Resurgence, duality and modularity in AdS/CFT. - Automorphic forms and non-perturbative scattering amplitudes. - Resurgence and (Mock)-modularity in 3d Chern-Simons theories. - Exact results in localizable superconformal quantum field theories. - Resurgence and modularity in black holes and quantum information.

Speakable and Unspeakable in Quantum Gravity
13 mai 2024 - 31 mai 2024 • Saclay, France
Organisateur:
Institut Pascal, Saclay
Résumé:
The broad goal of this program is to advance our understanding of quantum gravity starting from nothing more than basic physical principles, such as unitarity, symmetry and causality, by harnessing the AdS/CFT Correspondence and the bootstrap approach of large N conformal field theories. With attention to the question of possible uniqueness of string theory among putative theories of quantum gravity, it is in this holographic sense that we will explore the ''Speakable and Unspeakable in Quantum Gravity'': what features of quantum gravity can be rigorously defined by way of AdS/CFT, and leveraged to classify the space of theories that actually exist? This program will place extra emphasis on low-dimensional holography, which sharpens both the physical puzzles and the mathematical tools used to solve them.

Workshop — BPS Dynamics and Quantum Mathematics
20 mai 2024 - 21 mai 2024 • Firenze , Italie
Organisateur:
Galileo Galilei Institute
Résumé:
Quantum field theory is not only the unifying language of fundamental forces, but also an extremely rich source of surprising non-perturbative dualities. This success in predicting unexpected new links among seemingly distant subjects has accelerated on many fronts over the past few years, thanks to applications of modern developments in “quantum” mathematics to quantum field theories with supersymmetric, integrable, conformal, topological, or holomorphic structures. The insights emerging from these developments have been the source of important novel results across various branches of theoretical physics and mathematics, hinting at further new connections awaiting discovery. The common ground to all these recent developments is the richness of the physics and mathematics underlying the dynamics of protected (BPS) sectors, whose study ties together fundamental questions in diverse fields in original ways. This workshop aims to highlight and discuss the impact of key developments, to forge new synergies, and to grasp together the hints of far-reaching new opportunities.

Habitability: The Astrophysical, Atmospheric and Geophysical Implications
21 mai 2024 - 14 jui 2024 • Garching, Allemagne
Organisateur:
MIAPbP - Munich Institute for Astro-, Particle and BioPhysics an institute of the Excellence Cluster ORIGINS
Résumé:
It is widely accepted that habitability and the capability of a planet to maintain its habitable conditions are deeply interwoven with its chemical composition and physical properties such as its atmospheric and geological/geophysical characteristics, orbital motion, dynamics, and its interactions with its host star. How these interactions originate and how they enable the planet to maintain its habitability are complex questions that can only be answered through collaborations between scientists of their respective fields. This workshop aims to bring together scientists from the fields of stellar astrophysics, planetary science, planetary dynamics, geology, and geophysics to discuss fundamental questions regarding the formation, characterization, and detection of habitable planets. Our plan is to facilitate interactions among participants through lectures, presentations and discussion sessions as well as to provide them with ample time to initiate collaborations and carry out their independent research. Our workshop is open to scientists of all levels, in particular junior and early-career researchers.

Quantum Aspects of Inflationary Cosmology
24 jui 2024 - 19 jul 2024 • Garching, Allemagne
Organisateur:
MIAPbP - Munich Institute for Astro-, Particle and BioPhysics an institute of the Excellence Cluster ORIGINS
Résumé:
How did quantum fluctuations of the inflaton field provide the seeds for structure on cosmological scales? Did other fields play a role during inflation? How did their quantum fluctuations imprint on cosmological observables (e.g., non-Gaussianity) or survive as cosmological relics today (e.g., dark matter, matter/antimatter asymmetry)? How can these degrees of freedom be embedded into a compelling UV theory? By bringing together experts on particle physics and cosmology, we hope to develop a deeper understanding of these tough questions over the course of this 4-week MIAPbP meeting.

Bad Honnef Physics School — Integrable Techniques in Theoretical Physics
14 jul 2024 - 19 jul 2024 • Physikzentrum Bad Honnef, Allemagne
Résumé:
This school on Integrability is designed especially for young researchers, including PhD students and PostDocs, who are eager to delve into the fascinating realm of integrability in physics.
Sujets:
The analysis of interacting field theories or many-body systems requires in general approximations or numerical simulations. Both methods have their limitation: while the approximative method is directly limited by the validity of the simplifying assumptions, numerical methods can be constrained by the lack of sufficient memory or exponentially increasing computational time with the system size. Furthermore, one needs preexisting, established, and reliable results to contextualize the derived results. Integrable models, which can be solved analytically provide very reliable starting points for not exactly solvable systems. Besides their role as benchmarks, integrable models can also be experimentally realized and thus have a direct application in explaining physical phenomena e.g. ultracold atomic gases in optical lattices. Hence, Integrability has a rich history in physics and boasts wide-ranging applications across scientific disciplines.

MOLINFO — Emergence of Information in Molecular Systems
22 jul 2024 - 02 aou 2024 • Garching, Allemagne
Organisateur:
MIAPbP - Munich Institute for Astro-, Particle and BioPhysics an institute of the Excellence Cluster ORIGINS
Résumé:
Likely pathways from the inanimate to the animate world involve a transition that can be thought of as the emergence of information in molecular systems. Before this transition, heteropolymers already exist, but the sequence information of a polymer does not persist beyond the lifetime of the polymer. During the transition, information becomes a separate dynamical entity, which lives and changes over longer timescales than its carrier molecules. This transition does not necessarily require the existence of a full-fledged replication machinery, such as polymerase enzymes that copy informational polymers. Instead, the interplay of simpler reactions can create strong correlations in pools of informational polymers, which can also decouple the timescales of the informational dynamics from those of the polymer dynamics. This interplay is only beginning to be studied, experimentally as well as computationally and theoretically, such that many conceptual and methodological questions are currently open. The central aim of this workshop is to bring together scientists with different backgrounds, in order to attack these questions together.

High-Energy Plasma Phenomena in Astrophysics
09 sep 2024 - 20 sep 2024 • Garching, Allemagne
Organisateur:
MIAPbP - Munich Institute for Astro-, Particle and BioPhysics an institute of the Excellence Cluster ORIGINS
Résumé:
In recent years, spurred in large part by the development of first-principles numerical simulations, the plasma astrophysics community has made important strides in understanding the plasma processes relevant for astrophysical systems. The next step, which will be a key topic of the MIAPbP program, is to connect the rich plasma behavior to observed radiative phenomena. These phenomena include old puzzles, e.g. hard X-ray emission from accreting black holes, gamma-ray flares from blazars, cosmic ray acceleration, giant magnetar flares and GRBs. Plasma physics is also key to solving new puzzles such as the cosmological FRBs and gamma-rays from neutron star mergers. The role of plasma instabilities is especially prominent in transient phenomena and strong connections are emerging between plasma physics and time-domain astronomy, a quickly developing observational field. Plasma physics also plays an increasing role in multi-messenger astronomy where main targets are energetic compact objects capable of producing neutrinos, gravitational waves, and nonthermal radiation. The current efforts to understand plasma behavior lay the foundations for the future of high-energy astrophysics. Within a two-week MIAPbP program, we want to facilitate progress in this direction by bringing together both senior researchers as well as early-career scientists.
