PCIC Europe — Petroleum and Chemical Industry Committee Conference
ID
901239
Dates
16 May 2017 - 18 May 2017
Location
Vienna, Austria
Abstract
PCIC Europe is the premier European forum for the exchange of experience in the practical application of electrical and instrumentation applications, as well as automation, in the petroleum, chemical and pharmaceutical industries, including all upstream and downstream activities. For the PCIC Europe committee the cross-border dialogue is the premise to facilitate and accelerate innovation in times of unstable market environments and strict cost-saving programs. In the conference sessions, technical excellence from the petrochemical industry is shared through examples from the field. The lessons learned in real time conditions, on-shore and offshore, are discussed during the sessions in an instructive way and informally during various networking opportunities.

The parallel approach, focusing on both electrical and automation, applies also to the half-day conference program dedicated to tutorials. Intergenerational transmission being one the goals of PCIC Europe, attendees gain knowledge in practical problem-solving, as the tutorials present these challenges in a step-by-step methodology during these presentations.

Workshop III: Data Assimilation, Uncertainty Reduction, and Optimization for Subsurface Flow
ID
832067
Dates
22 May 2017 - 26 May 2017
Location
Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM),, United States
Abstract
There are major computational challenges and substantial uncertainties associated with model inversion and performance optimization in oil field applications. As production and (in some cases) 4D seismic and electromagnetic data are collected, there are inevitably discrepancies between the predicted and actual reservoir responses. This drives the need for data assimilation, usually referred to as history matching in petroleum engineering. History matching involves the solution of a computationally demanding, highly ill-conditioned, inverse problem. Key complications that arise are the uncertain nature of the geology (and thus the need to "properly" sample the posterior distribution), combined with the need to retain geological realism in history-matched reservoir descriptions. Additional complexity enters as a result of the unknown rock-physics quantities needed to integrate multiphysics data sets. Applications received by Monday, March 27, 2017, will receive fullest consideration.

Abstract
The energy mix is changing but the world will need every form of energy - both fossil and renewable - to meet its growing demands. Our ability to respond effectively to all the changes in our industry especially during this low oil and gas price cycle, determines whether we stay in a time of crises or move to that of opportunity. In order to survive and ultimately thrive again, we need to change and adapt our approaches and historical norms. On behalf of the LAC, it is my pleasure to invite you to the 2017 EAGE in Paris. It’s time to open a new Chapter.
