Quantum mechanics at macroscopic scales
18. Dez 2025 • Keele University Staffordshire, Großbritannien
Veranstalter:
IOP West Midlands Branch, Keele Centre
Zusammenfassung:
Quantum mechanics is often thought of as the science that describes the behaviour of the world at atomic scales. That’s understandable: as objects get larger and heavier, their delicate quantum features are quickly lost through interactions with the environment, giving rise to the familiar classical behaviour we see around us. But what if we could preserve and control quantum behaviour in bigger systems?

In this talk, Dr Vijayan will describe how his research group uses light to trap and control the motion of nano- and micron-scale particles down to the limits set by quantum mechanics. These “quantum optomechanical” systems offer a pathway to exploring quantum mechanics at scales far larger than atoms, bringing us closer to a future where quantum effects are not confined to the microscopic realm.

Picturing the Planets: models of the planetary system, from antiquity to the present day
16. Feb 2026 • University of Sheffield, Großbritannien
Veranstalter:
Institute of Physics (IOP)
Zusammenfassung:
The five nakedeye planets, bright, conspicuous, and not fixed relative to the stars, have piqued the interest of humanity from the first civilisations to the present day. In this talk I will look at how our models of the solar system have evolved over time, from the first attempts to make sense of the planets' motions to the present day focus on the early history of the planetary system.

Midlands Heat — 3 Minute Wonder Competition
19. Feb 2026 • Nottingham, Großbritannien
Veranstalter:
Institute of Physics (IOP)
Zusammenfassung:
The 3 Minute Wonder competition is a UK and Ireland-wide science communication competition which challenges researchers or project team members to explain their work to the public in just three minutes, pitching their original research to a panel of judges and a non-specialist audience. The aim is to bring cutting edge physics-related research to life for the general public.

Cosmic Messengers: A History of Meteoritics
24. Mär 2026 • University of Surrey , Großbritannien
Veranstalter:
Institute of Physics (IOP)
Zusammenfassung:
The study of extraterrestrial matter, from meteorites passing by cosmic dust to sample returned from asteroids, has a long and fascinating history. For centuries, humans have been intrigued by stones from the sky,” but it was only relatively recently that scientists began to understand the true nature and significance of meteorites and cosmic dust. This talk explores the development of the science of meteoritics, tracing its evolution from early observations to the modern era of sophisticated analyses. We will examine key discoveries that revolutionized our understanding of these celestial messengers, particularly focusing on the “Antarctic meteorite revolution” – a period of unparalleled discovery driven by the unique conditions of the frozen continent. During this talk, I will explore this history and explain how scientists have learned to decipher these celestial objects. This journey reveals how meteoritics has helped us unravel the mysteries of the early solar system, shedding light on the formation of planets and the building blocks of life.

Give a man a record and they dance for the day, give that man a synthesizer and they dance for a lifetime
12. Mai 2026 • University of Surrey , Großbritannien
Veranstalter:
Institute of Physics (IOP)
Zusammenfassung:
In this talk Zen will take a whimsical look at how music and music making have danced with technology throughout time, and how a digital imagination could replace the automation of today, and perhaps the humans of tomorrow. He will help navigate ways to use those wishes wisely to create the right tools and rules, so that rather than replacing humans, it empowers them with new abilities, skills, and platforms for self expression. Through co-creation we can hopefully prevent the full automation of humanity, and perhaps preserve the act of creativity and art itself!

Physics of the Everyday – The Bubbles in your Beer
21. Mai 2026 • Nottingham, Großbritannien
Veranstalter:
Institute of Physics (IOP)
Zusammenfassung:
This session will be led by soft matter physicist Dr Kyle Baldwin to focus on the stable foams that often accompany beer as “head”. Why are beers foamy in the first place, how do the bubbles behave (or misbehave) in the glass, and why is this froth so important? The Physics of the Everyday series aims to introduce the fundamental physics behind everyday things we take for granted in an accessible, fun, and interactive way. Each short talk will be accompanied by a demonstration and investigation, as well as an opportunity for conversation and discussion.
Themen:
A short talk and workshop, followed by a networking opportunity.
