EMBO Practical Course — Metabolite and species dynamics in microbial communities
16 oct 2022 - 21 oct 2022 • Heidelberg, Allemagne
Organisateur:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Résumé:
Metagenomics studies are rapidly uncovering the compositional richness of microbial communities in diverse habitats ranging from the oceans to the human gut. While their fundamental role in our health and environment is undeniable, there is an urgent need for unravelling molecular mechanisms underlying the dynamics of these communities. This requires a combined experimental and computational approach. Recent studies (including those from the organisers’ and speakers’ labs) have underlined the success of such integrative approaches. For example, emergence of cell subpopulations (Varahan et al. eLife 2019, 2020), and long-term stability (Blasche, Kim et al. Nat Microbiol. 2021) through metabolic cross-feeding. As researchers world-wide map species dynamics in the ecosystems of their interest, this course will provide the necessary overview and tools for moving from cataloguing to identifying key interaction agents, especially metabolites. This will include integrating species and metabolite dynamics data, as well as leveraging the power of genome-scale metabolic models to predict community interactions.

EMBO Workshop — The cell cycle: One engine – many cycles
20 oct 2022 • Konstanz, Allemagne
Organisateur:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Résumé:
The regulatory network known as the cell cycle is fundamental to the life of all eukaryotic organisms. The challenge in cell division research is to understand the mechanistic principles of the key processes and to integrate them into a cyclical or linear sequence generating viable daughter cells. Cell cycle research has succeeded in ordering these processes into a generic or “text book” cycle. However, this concept does not reflect the remarkable ability of the cell cycle “engine” to orchestrate a variety of cell divisions. These include not only embryonic, somatic, and meiotic divisions, but also divisions controlled by developmental context or physical factors, and the aberrant divisions of cancer cells. The EMBO Cell Cycle Workshop 2022 will therefore emphasise the question of how the basic cell cycle machinery is modified to generate different types of divisions. Working across different model systems and approaches, the cell division field has recognized the need for a common “language” in the form of mathematics and physics. This EMBO Workshop will therefore promote exchange between numerous disciplines to generate a new understanding of how the cell cycle creates the diversity of life.

EMBO | EMBL Symposium: Life at the periphery: mechanobiology of the cell surface
12 jui 2023 - 15 jui 2023 • Heidelberg, Allemagne
Organisateur:
European Molecular Biology Laboratory, EMBL Heidelberg
Résumé:
The cell surface – comprising the plasma membrane, the underlying cortical cytoskeleton and in many cell types a cell wall – is a central integrator of cell form and function. Its physico-chemical properties are rapidly modulated to accommodate or drive changes in shape or behaviour and to exchange matter and information with the environment. This symposium will bring together researchers from different communities interested in processes occurring at the cell surface across kingdoms. It will focus on new technologies that empower studies of cell wall, actin and membrane biology, such as advanced imaging in in vitro and in vivo systems, as well as approaches combining molecular biology with computational and biophysical approaches.

EMBO | EMBL Symposium: The human microbiome
20 sep 2023 - 23 sep 2023 • Heidelberg, Allemagne
Organisateur:
European Molecular Biology Laboratory, EMBL Heidelberg
Résumé:
Human microbiota – the collection of microbes living in and on our body – have a significant impact on human health and well-being. They have been associated with numerous diseases, yet we have barely understood their role in the context of life-style and genetics. Various initiatives are underway around the world to survey the human microbiota at several body sites, characterise them, understand their interactions with the human hosts, elucidate their role in diseases, and design possible therapeutic or dietary interventions. There is a new wave of studies mining the human microbiota for bioactive compounds such as antibiotics, and for characterising specific microbial strains. This conference will provide plentiful opportunities for researchers to learn about and to connect to important developments in studying the human microbiota

EMBO Workshop: The mobile genome: genetic and physiological impacts of transposable elements
08 nov 2023 - 11 nov 2023 • Heidelberg, Allemagne
Organisateur:
European Molecular Biology Laboratory, EMBL Heidelberg
Résumé:
This conference provides a venue for cross-disciplinary discussions, with the goal of catalysing inter-disciplinary collaborations to address emerging questions in these scientific fields. Although often disparaged as “junk” DNA, it is now undeniable that transposable element (TE) activity has significantly shaped the structure and function of all genomes, ranging from bacteria to humans. TEs are major drivers of genetic diversity and contribute to human disease. Remarkably, recent research has shown that TE-derived sequences also can be co-opted by the host to play important roles in gene expression, early development, immunity, neuronal diversification, and, perhaps, aging.
