EMBO | EMBL Symposium — Seeing is believing: imaging the molecular processes of life
04 oct 2023 - 07 oct 2023 • EMBL Heidelberg and Virtual, Allemagne
Résumé:
The molecular processes of life are naturally dynamic in space and time from the atomic to the organismal level. The rapid development of imaging methods across the full scale of biological organisation is revolutionising our ability to visualise the inner workings of macromolecular complexes, organelles, cells, tissues, organs and whole organisms. Being able to see biological processes unfold in real time allows us to understand the mechanisms of life as well as disease.

Résumé:
Liquid biopsies have the advantage of being largely non-invasive and providing a vast amount of information for the detection and monitoring of diseases such as cancer. This course will provide an overview in the several techniques to detect and analyse circulating tumour cells (CTCs), cell free tumor DNA (ctDNA), miRNA in liquid biopsies, cell free tumour RNA (ctRNA) and proteins. Participants will be introduced to all aspects ranging from proper sampling through error free sequencing to data analysis. Additional lectures will cover extracellular vesicles and clinical aspects using liquid biopsies, especially in the field of cancer diagnostics.

EMBO | EMBL Symposium: Organoids: modelling organ development and disease in 3D culture
18 oct 2023 - 21 oct 2023 • Heidelberg, Allemagne
Organisateur:
European Molecular Biology Laboratory, EMBL Heidelberg
Résumé:
The ability to grow human tissues from stem cells in 3D culture has the potential to revolutionise the drug discovery process and regenerative medicine. Building on a long tradition of cell and developmental biology knowledge, organoids resembling a variety of human tissues have been generated. This conference will bring together the leading researchers in this field to establish a new research community and reveal parallels between various tissue models. The aim of this meeting is to bring together researchers from different fields to enhance our understanding of how organoids can be formed and maintained, how they can be used to study disease and how we might eventually use them to regenerate and replace human organ tissue

EMBL Course — Solution scattering from biological macromolecules
06 nov 2023 - 10 nov 2023 • EMBL Heidelberg – virtual, Allemagne
Organisateur:
European Molecular Biology Laboratory | EMBL
Résumé:
This course consists of two parts: virtual and onsite. The virtual course takes place 6 – 10 November 2023 and the onsite part takes place 27 November – 1 December 2023.

The virtual course will cover the basics of SAXS/SANS, instrumentation, data collection, modelling techniques and complementary use with other methods. The students are encouraged to sign-up for a self-paced practical tutorial that covers basic and advanced SAXS data processing steps (including quizzes to keep track of successful participation). In addition, students are encouraged to apply to the ‘add on module’ which includes an on-site visit (5 days) in Hamburg to participate either in track 1: X-ray beamline operation or track 2: sample optimisation for SAXS. Students not travelling to Hamburg can sign up for small discussion groups to discuss their SAXS data in more detail.

EMBO Workshop: The mobile genome: genetic and physiological impacts of transposable elements
08 nov 2023 - 11 nov 2023 • Heidelberg, Allemagne
Organisateur:
European Molecular Biology Laboratory, EMBL Heidelberg
Résumé:
This conference provides a venue for cross-disciplinary discussions, with the goal of catalysing inter-disciplinary collaborations to address emerging questions in these scientific fields. Although often disparaged as “junk” DNA, it is now undeniable that transposable element (TE) activity has significantly shaped the structure and function of all genomes, ranging from bacteria to humans. TEs are major drivers of genetic diversity and contribute to human disease. Remarkably, recent research has shown that TE-derived sequences also can be co-opted by the host to play important roles in gene expression, early development, immunity, neuronal diversification, and, perhaps, aging.

EMBL Course — Hands-on flow cytometry: learning by doing!
13 nov 2023 - 17 nov 2023 • EMBL Heidelberg, Allemagne
Organisateur:
European Molecular Biology Laboratory | EMBL
Résumé:
Flow Cytometry is one of the most powerful single cell analysis methods used throughout the life sciences and medicine. By utilising Flow Cytometry we can identify and quantify specific cell populations from heterogeneous samples, analyse the cell cycle or proliferation state or simply detect the expression of fluorescent reporters. In line with the suggestions from our course in 2019, we will significantly enhance the number of analysis sessions together with our partners from FlowJo. We will cover the theory of Flow Cytometry and corroborate this information intensively with the practical issues of the most frequent assays as part of our practical course curriculum.

European Molecular Biology Laboratory | EMBL
Résumé:
Light microscopy is the most widely used form of microscopy for life science research. The correct handling of the microscope and optimising image quality (e.g. contrast, resolution) as well as experimental design according to different applications are crucial to obtain the best results. This course will provide the participants with an overview about the basics of microscopy (light and optics, contrast techniques and imaging). The confocal part will include multicolor, 3D and time lapse imaging as well as spectral imaging, photobleaching (FRAP, FLIP, FLAP) and photoactivation techniques. Basic image analysis tools including measurement functions, colocalisation and spectral unmixing as well as 3D/4D image processing will be covered, both in theory and practice. The course will combine lectures with intense daily hands-on practices followed by discussions.
