EMBL Course — Deep learning for image analysis
05 jui 2023 - 09 jui 2023 • EMBL Heidelberg, Allemagne
Organisateur:
European Molecular Biology Laboratory | EMBL
Résumé:
The advent of deep learning has brought a revolution in the field of computer vision, including most tasks and research questions concerned with microscopy image analysis. Neural networks have been successfully used for image restoration, classification and segmentation, for the detection of objects and characterisation of their morphology, for high-throughput imaging and large-scale processing in 3D. Despite these advances, training and deployment of such neural networks remains difficult for practitioners of image analysis. The aim of our course is to close this gap and teach the participants – in the most hands-on way possible – to apply deep learning-based methods to their own data and image analysis problems.

EMBO | EMBL Symposium: Life at the periphery: mechanobiology of the cell surface
12 jui 2023 - 15 jui 2023 • Heidelberg, Allemagne
Organisateur:
European Molecular Biology Laboratory, EMBL Heidelberg
Résumé:
The cell surface – comprising the plasma membrane, the underlying cortical cytoskeleton and in many cell types a cell wall – is a central integrator of cell form and function. Its physico-chemical properties are rapidly modulated to accommodate or drive changes in shape or behaviour and to exchange matter and information with the environment. This symposium will bring together researchers from different communities interested in processes occurring at the cell surface across kingdoms. It will focus on new technologies that empower studies of cell wall, actin and membrane biology, such as advanced imaging in in vitro and in vivo systems, as well as approaches combining molecular biology with computational and biophysical approaches.

Résumé:
The conference will explore the evolution of biological systems at different levels: from genes and molecules to organism development and ecology. As such, we have invited leaders in their respective fields across various scales of evolution: molecular, network, microbial, developmental, and community. Particular emphasis for this conference will be placed on understanding evolution through mechanistic biology. We will explore recent advances in experimental and theoretical approaches to study how genetic and non-genetic changes drive and constrain evolution. The meeting will offer a training ground and productive learning experience for attendees, and provide networking opportunities for scientists across disciplines relevant to evolutionary biology. It should be of particular interest to those working at the interface of evolution, quantitative genetics, development, and systems biology

EMBO | EMBL Symposium — Theory and concepts in biology
18 jul 2023 - 21 jul 2023 • EMBL Heidelberg and Virtual, Allemagne
Résumé:
Recent progress in biology has led to an explosion of factual knowledge about the living world over a huge range of scales in space and time. Yet, many questions about how to make sense of this data remain across the entire diversity of the living world from the smallest bacterium to the ecosystems of the Serengeti. This meeting aims to bring together a diverse collection of researchers interested in finding ways to parlay this ever-increasing factual knowledge into a corresponding array of conceptual knowledge. The goal of this symposium is to assemble an interdisciplinary community and to provide a platform to discuss perspectives on the role of theory in biology, and importantly also vice versa, the impact that biology can have on theory.

EMBO | EMBL Symposium: The human microbiome
20 sep 2023 - 23 sep 2023 • Heidelberg, Allemagne
Organisateur:
European Molecular Biology Laboratory, EMBL Heidelberg
Résumé:
Human microbiota – the collection of microbes living in and on our body – have a significant impact on human health and well-being. They have been associated with numerous diseases, yet we have barely understood their role in the context of life-style and genetics. Various initiatives are underway around the world to survey the human microbiota at several body sites, characterise them, understand their interactions with the human hosts, elucidate their role in diseases, and design possible therapeutic or dietary interventions. There is a new wave of studies mining the human microbiota for bioactive compounds such as antibiotics, and for characterising specific microbial strains. This conference will provide plentiful opportunities for researchers to learn about and to connect to important developments in studying the human microbiota

EMBO Workshop: The mobile genome: genetic and physiological impacts of transposable elements
08 nov 2023 - 11 nov 2023 • Heidelberg, Allemagne
Organisateur:
European Molecular Biology Laboratory, EMBL Heidelberg
Résumé:
This conference provides a venue for cross-disciplinary discussions, with the goal of catalysing inter-disciplinary collaborations to address emerging questions in these scientific fields. Although often disparaged as “junk” DNA, it is now undeniable that transposable element (TE) activity has significantly shaped the structure and function of all genomes, ranging from bacteria to humans. TEs are major drivers of genetic diversity and contribute to human disease. Remarkably, recent research has shown that TE-derived sequences also can be co-opted by the host to play important roles in gene expression, early development, immunity, neuronal diversification, and, perhaps, aging.

EMBL Course — Hands-on flow cytometry: learning by doing!
13 nov 2023 - 17 nov 2023 • EMBL Heidelberg, Allemagne
Organisateur:
European Molecular Biology Laboratory | EMBL
Résumé:
Flow Cytometry is one of the most powerful single cell analysis methods used throughout the life sciences and medicine. By utilising Flow Cytometry we can identify and quantify specific cell populations from heterogeneous samples, analyse the cell cycle or proliferation state or simply detect the expression of fluorescent reporters. In line with the suggestions from our course in 2019, we will significantly enhance the number of analysis sessions together with our partners from FlowJo. We will cover the theory of Flow Cytometry and corroborate this information intensively with the practical issues of the most frequent assays as part of our practical course curriculum.
