EMBO Practical Course: Microbial Metagenomics: A 360º Approach

Résumé:
The course focuses on the highly interdisciplinary topic of metagenomics. During the course, participants will receive an overview of state-of-the-art genomic technologies and bioinformatic tools. A balanced approach of lectures and practical sessions will provide a general background and the latest advancements in the field as well as its relationship with other disciplines. The course will start with training the participants about experimental design and the preparation of their own metagenomic libraries with soil or their (environmental) samples. The metagenomic DNA will be sequenced onsite using third generation sequencing technologies and subsequent data analysis. Thus, the students have a unique opportunity to work on the complete workflow from sample preparation to data analysis. This updated course version will also address cutting-edge single-cell microbial genomics during practical. Bioinformatics analysis is a key part of the course, where students will learn how to process data from raw sequences to the application of algorithms for analysing metagenomic datasets. Trainers will provide short lectures with follow-up hands-on exercises in order to have the participants learning and assessing their knowledge.

Wolf & Co 2020 - 7th International Symposium on Canids

The International symposium on Canids includes extensive specialist presentations by scientists and experts with subsequent discussions. To facilitate the exchange of information, the lectures will be translated (GER-ENG-RUS) using modern interpreting technology. Informative poster presentations and stands, selected additional lectures as well as the "meet and greet" with the referring scientists are just as much a part of the symposium as the possibility to end the day together in the bar in the evening. The international symposium Wolf & Co in Berlin will be again hosted by Dogwatcher (Thomas Bursch, Marion Pepper, Lars Thiemann) in 2020.

EMBO Practical Course: Measuring Translational Dynamics by Ribosome Profiling

Résumé:
Regulation of translation is a key layer in the control of gene expression, playing a critical role in many biological and pathophysiological settings. In the last decade, methodological advances have provided comprehensive insights into cellular transcriptomes and proteomes, however, the systems-wide analysis of translation remained an unsolved experimental challenge. The recent advent of ‘ribosome-profiling’ has provided the methodological basis for comprehensive transcriptome-wide analyses of translation at sub-codon resolution by the precise and high-throughput determination of ribosomal positions on mRNA. Its application in a variety of organisms yielded novel insights into protein synthesis and its dynamic regulation, significantly advancing our understanding of the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. This practical course will combine theoretical sessions with hands-on experimentation and computation emphasising the key steps of the protocol and computational quality control.

In recent years interdisciplinary approaches have changed the view on lysosomes as a purely degradative compartment towards central players in adaptive responses to metabolic, developmental and environmental cues and in the interplay with the autophagy pathway. In this international symposium we have gathered scientists from around the world to share their interest in molecular mechanisms of lysosomal homeostasis and regulation of autophagy. The scientific program includes invited lectures, short talks selected from submitted abstracts on the basis of scientific merit and relevance, and poster sessions. The symposium is limited to 160 participants. About the organizers: The Research Unit FOR2625 is supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and its research aims at elucidating the molecular mechanisms of maintaining lysosomal homeostasis and the adaptive regulatory mechanisms to compensate lysosomal dysfunctions (see www.for2625-lysosomes.de for detailed information).

The purpose of this intense one week summer course is to get a deep understanding in Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) with a special focus on bioinformatics issues. Advantages and disadvantages of current sequencing technologies and their implications on data analysis will be discovered. You will be trained on understanding NGS data formats and handling potential problems/errors therein. In the summer school we will use a real-life RNA-seq dataset from the current market leader illumina. All students will be enabled to perform important first tasks of NGS data analysis themselves. The layout of the summer school has been adapted to the needs of beginners in the field of NGS bioinformatics and allows scientists with no or little background in computer science to get a first hands-on experience in this new and fast evolving research topic. In the evenings there will be social events, like a conference dinner, or a guided city tour through Berlin. These are always great networking possibilities.

EMBO Practical Course: Molecular Geobiology

This course will bring together early career researchers in the fields of geology, planetary science, micro- and molecular biology for an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of Geobiology. Participants will be introduced to a collaborative environment and the course will facilitate interaction between researchers in multiple fields who would otherwise have a limited opportunity to exchange ideas. One of the core objectives will be knowledge translation and mobilization. The principal themes include methods in field geobiology, integrating geochemical and biological data, interpretation across scales, nucleic acid extraction from rock samples, differences in resolution between field and laboratory data sets, and the importance of geobiology to astrobiology and origin of life studies. Participants will have the opportunity to conduct field research at the Ries impact structure to put into practice lessons learned regarding geobiology field work. This field excursion is a geobiological field trip to an impact structure and will be led by internationally renowned experts in impact cratering. Participants will come away with the ability to plan and conduct molecular biology research in rock-hosted microbial systems.

Résumé:
Neurovascular biology is a young, emerging field that aims to unravel the molecular communication between the nervous system and the vasculature. Both the nervous system and the vascular system share striking conceptual similarities in the assembly of cellular networks through guided growth and branching processes. Vascular and neural cells work together to form a number of functional tissue compartments. Endothelial cells, certain mural support cells (i.e., pericytes), astrocytes and neurons assemble the neurovascular unit, which establishes the blood-brain and blood-retina barriers. In fact, many of the most debilitating neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive decline involve disruption of the neurovascular unit or compromised vascular function in the nervous system. It has become increasingly clear that the endothelium and mural support cells function go beyond nutrient supply and are instructive and structurally required to allow nervous system function. In this symposium, we bring together researchers from vascular biology and neurobiology to foster interdisciplinary exchange and new emerging concepts on how vascular and nervous systems crosstalk to maintain organ homeostasis and function.

This conference series has become known for exploring yeasts as models to study questions of general relevance to evolution and ecology. Experts will speak on a range of topics, including evolution theory, ecology, genetics, cell biology, genomics, systems biology, metabolic modelling and engineering. The focus of this conference will be on comparative and experimental strategies to explore evolutionary questions, from field studies to computer simulations to comparative genomics. Central evolutionary questions will be discussed, using yeast and a range of other species whose biology is well understood and to determine the degree to which that biology is conserved in more distantly related species. The aim is to move from correlative studies based on comparative work to more causal studies based on broad experimental support. This problem is particularly pressing in the age of cheap and easy sequencing.

Before the genetic information stored in DNA can be used to direct cell growth and metabolism, it has to be transferred into RNA. Messenger RNAs (mRNAs) that code for proteins and noncoding RNAs are key components in the transmission of genetic information in all life forms - from viruses to complex mammalian organisms. Exciting recent findings now reveal a new layer of information added to RNAs in the form of chemical marks (the epitranscriptome) that play a critical role in gene expression control. This remarkable complexity in the lives of RNAs will be discussed at this meeting.

EMBO Workshop: Neuroepigenetics: From Cells to Behaviour and Disease

Neuroepigenetics is a young field that is attracting a lot of attention. Genome-wide association studies and mouse models continue to discover new connections between chromatin regulators and neurodevelopmental disorders and epigenetic pathways have been implicated in various physiological and pathological aspects of brain function, such as memory formation and recovery, addiction and neurodegeneration. This conference aims to provide a gathering opportunity for researchers of all levels who are interested in how gene regulation participates in the development and function of the brain, with particular attention to the chromatin-based regulation of gene expression. The key objective is to bring together, in the same meeting, two groups of scientists: neuroscientists with interest in gene regulation and molecular biologists with strong expertise in the mechanisms of transcription and epigenetics that want to apply their knowledge to understanding how the brain works. We believe the two groups can learn a lot from each other and we hope this conference can function as a catalyst for scientific exchange and collaboration between them.

EMBO | EMBL Symposium: Biological Oscillators: Design, Mechanism, Function

Résumé:
Oscillations are abundant - from hormonal oscillations with periods of days and months, to genetic fluctuations in the range of hours (circadian clock, embryonic oscillators), and metabolic and biochemical oscillations in the order of minutes (glycolytic oscillations) and seconds (Calcium-dynamics) - oscillations are central to biology across different temporal and spatial scales. At this symposium multiple disciplines will come together in order to discuss common mechanisms underlying the generation of oscillations. This symposium aims to further strengthen a new, highly interdisciplinary community composed of scientists from very different fields and who share a common interest in oscillatory phenomena and biological dynamics. As such, this meeting provides a unique platform for this emerging new community working at the interface between quantitative biology, complex oscillatory systems and physics.

EMBL Conference: From Functional Genomics to Systems Biology

Résumé:
The main objective of this conference is to bring people together from diverse disciplines to exchange ideas, promote cross-disciplinary collaborations and to form a synthesis of appropriate systems-level approaches. The meeting is therefore purposely broad to cover all aspects of genomics to systems biology, a unique combination that is highly appreciated by the participants. Over the past decade, this EMBL conference has therefore served as an important venue in helping to shape the field, or to be more precise to help generate a community of scientists that come from very diverse disciplines, each with the common goal to understand the systems level properties of their system of interest.

A rapidly increasing number of researchers aim to purify and identify extracellular vesicles and many methodologies to isolate and analyse these vesicles are available and have been implemented. This course will cover the basics, possibilities and limitations of different purification and characterisation techniques and will address strategies to understand their role in biomedical applications.

There is an increasing awareness that mechanistic structural information on molecular machines is ideally generated within the context of intact cells in order to fully grasp how they function in a complex native environment. Recent technological advances have nurtured the development of such in situ structural biology approaches in several disciplines, including cryo-EM, mass spectrometry, super-resolution microscopy, NMR, computational modelling and others.
