Résumé:
A cell’s hereditary material is comprised of nucleic acids, which allows living organisms to pass on the genetic information from one generation to next. The Nucleotides in both DNA and RNA are comprised up of a sugar, a nitrogen base, and a phosphate molecule. Nucleic acids are long chains of nucleotides joined together by phosphodiester bonds. Nucleic acids comprised of: deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA). DNA and RNA having slight difference in their chemical composition, yet play importantly different biological roles. In the proposed Nucleic Acids 2024, we will bring together various eminent researchers working on molecular biology (Nucleic Acids) to learn and share the latest advancements in the field of cutting-edge applications in biology, functional nucleic acids, basic principles, human health, and its related diseases. It is a broad audience gathering for exploring the advancement in RNA, Genome Dynamics, DNA damage and repair, maintenance and replication, structure and structure-function studies of nucleic acids and protein, innovative techniques at molecular and chemical level, and current aspects of CRISPR etc. which focus on its research and wider applications.

The Mathematics of the Hallmarks of Cancer
19 aou 2024 - 23 aou 2024 • The Fields Institute, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Organisateur:
Fields Institute
Résumé:
This workshop aims to showcase the state-of-the-art mathematical and computational models that are in use in mathematical oncology, with a particular focus on the fourteen hallmarks of cancer. New modeling challenges arise from these hallmarks. Some of the hallmarks relate to the characteristics of the cancer cells themselves (sub-cellular and cellular level), while others include more global effects such as blood circulation, the immune response, the effect and role of the microenvironment, mechanical forces, and the microbiome. Matching the biological diversity of the cancer hallmarks, is the diversity of mathematical approaches and techniques that have been used and are in use to give insight into the growth and spread of cancer – for example, continuum and discrete models; ordinary and partial differential equation models; individual-based and agent-based models; hybrid models; deterministic and stochastic approaches; analytical and computational approaches. Many of these processes act on very different spatial and temporal scales. Hence a new integrated multiscale mathematical modeling framework is needed to include new aspects and insights, such as spatial stochastic models and local and non-local partial differential equation models.

The Ecology and Evolution of Cancer
30 sep 2024 - 04 oct 2024 • The Fields Institute, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Organisateur:
Fields Institute
Résumé:
This workshop explores research in methods aimed at connecting mathematical models of cancer evolution and clinical data. It focuses on ecology and evolution of cancer. Traditionally, ecology and evolution have been the most “mathematical” (and perhaps the first mathematical) areas of biology. Mathematical contributions to these fields made in the 20th century are now fundamental parts of scientific knowledge. More recently, methods of ecology and evolution have found their way into oncology, bridging traditional molecular biology and mathematics including stochastic processes, dynamical systems, and nonlinear partial differential equations. New biological challenges lead to difficult mathematical problems and beautiful solutions, which are both innovative mathematically and impactful from the point of view of public health. These will be the focus of the proposed workshop .

Mathematical Modelling of Tumour Immune Dynamics and Immunotherapies
14 oct 2024 - 18 oct 2024 • The Fields Institute, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Organisateur:
Fields Institute
Résumé:
Immunotherapies have revolutionized treatments for several types of cancers, but have been met with clinical trial failures in others. The idea of eliciting an immune response against a tumour is old, but we are only just beginning to harness the potential of the immune system to treat both solid and liquid tumours. To improve immunotherapeutic approaches requires understanding how the immune system interacts around and within a tumour, allowing us to establish effective immunotherapeutic protocols. Mathematical modelling can help identify the mechanisms at the heart of immunotherapeutic efficacy and design successful therapeutic regimens. Close collaboration between experimentalists, clinicians, and quantitative researchers in academia and industry is required to forward models for implementation. This workshop will focus on tightening the links between researchers in different fields to fuel immunotherapy success.

From Phylogenetics to Phylogenomics: Mathematical and Statistical Challenges in the Era of Big Data
21 oct 2024 - 25 oct 2024 • Providence, RI, États-Unis
Organisateur:
Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM)
Résumé:
The unprecedented amount of genomic data that has become readily available presents specific challenges for the field of phylogenetic inference, which is concerned with estimating the evolutionary relationships among collections of species, populations, or sequences. These challenges include the development of evolutionary models that are sufficiently complex to be biologically realistic while remaining computationally tractable; deriving and implementing algorithms to efficiently estimate phylogenetic relationships that use models whose theoretical properties are well-understood and therefore interpretable; and devising ways to scale novel methodology developed to handle datasets that are increasingly large and complex. This workshop focuses on statistical modeling and the scaling of phylogenetic methods. Topics will include modeling (e.g. multispecies coalescent model with extension to networks; diversification models) and inference with speed to scale to genomic datasets, consistency, and robustness using statistical, combinatorial, and algebraic approaches. This workshop will present the latest advances in these areas and serve as a forum to spark new ideas and collaborations.

Algorithmic Advances and Implementation Challenges: Developing Practical Tools for Phylogenetic Inference
18 nov 2024 - 22 nov 2024 • Providence, RI, États-Unis
Organisateur:
Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM)
Résumé:
In this workshop, we will consider challenges and best practices in translating theory to software for phylogenetic inference. We will discuss strategies adopted by the tool development community, their relative advantages, and lessons learned through software development. We will discuss a variety of objective functions (parametric and non-parametric) and algorithmic techniques used by inference methods. We will cover parallelization and how it interacts with the choice of objective function and algorithmic technique. Finally, we will discuss best practices for evaluating new and existing software tools, not just to validate the implementation but also to study accuracy and scalability in relation to theory and usage in realistic bioinformatics pipelines. In addition to discussing how theory influences tools, we will examine how tool development can inform the theoretical questions asked.

Dagstuhl-Seminar — Coding Theory and Algorithms for Emerging Technologies in Synthetic Biology
15 dec 2024 - 20 dec 2024 • Schloss Dagstuhl, Wadern, Allemagne
Organisateur:
Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik
Résumé:
The progress in understanding genes and genomes has given a boost to the use of synthetic DNA for biological and technological applications. Synthetic nucleic acids play a central role in synthetic biology and in emerging therapeutic paradigms, e.g., genome editing and nucleic acid vaccines. DNA-based data storage is making significant progress, and thanks to its extreme data-density, its high durability and its timelessness, it is promising to be the next standard for data archival systems. Synthetic biology and the use of synthetic DNA for information storage applications bring important algorithmic and data analysis challenges. In synthetic biology, reagent and assay design are often driven by algorithmic approaches. Novel synthesis technologies offer cost-reduction by several orders of magnitude at the cost of increased error-rate, raising new coding-theoretic questions. This Dagstuhl Seminar aims to bring together leading biologists, chemists, engineers, computer/data scientists, and theoreticians working on synthetic biology and on DNA-based data storage, to enable joint work in small groups leading to discussing and exploring recent advancements and current challenges.
