EMBO Workshop — The many faces of cancer evolution

Résumé:
Research in the last few years has focused on the emergence and selection of genetic variants affecting protein functions. However, coding genes represent 2% of the human genome, tumor cells exhibit a wide variety of non-genetic (or epigenetic) alterations, and aberrant transcriptional programs ultimately determine cancer cell phenotypes. The role of the non-coding genome and epigenetic and transcriptional heterogeneity are only now emerging as alternative fuel for tumour evolution, sustained by technological advances to explore tumour heterogeneity at single cell and spatial resolution. This EMBO Workshop will bring together an interdisciplinary community of scientists with the goal of facilitating discussion and collaborations around genetic and non-genetic mechanisms of cancer evolution. The primary objective is to expand the current genetic-centric view with a mechanistic perspective centred around transcriptional and epigenetic alterations.

EMBO Practical Course — Integrating traditional and molecular approaches in ecology of glacial habitats

Résumé:
Glaciers have long been considered almost lifeless environments, but this view does not correspond to reality. In recent years, they have been recognized as ecosystems in their own right, teeming mostly with microbial life, but also hosting larger organisms. Our current knowledge of glacier ecosystems is poor and fragmented. Most studies conducted so far focused on peculiar supraglacial habitats and were restricted to specific taxa. The course is organised in two locations and will last 12 days. The venue for field activities and some lectures is the Rifugio Branca in Santa Caterina Valfurva (SO), Italy Alps. Alpine Guides and expert researchers will guide participant for sample collection in the National Stelvio Park. The venue for wet molecular laboratories, bioinformatics and statistics computer laboratories, practicals and other lectures is the University of Milano Bicocca, Milan, Italy.

EMBO | FEBS Lecture Course — Venice summer school 2021: The character concept in metabolic, physiological, and developmental evolution

The concept of “characters” lies at the heart of many central issues in evolutionary biology. Characters distinguish taxa, cause fitness differences, and generally are the fundamental units of comparison for studies of phenotypic evolution. Historically, the concept of characters originated in morphology and comparative anatomy, where it was intimately connected to the issue of homology. The summer school is mainly aimed at early-stage (PhD or postdoc) empirical and theoretical researchers with a general background and/or interest in developmental and/or evolutionary biology. More senior investigators are welcome to apply as well. Exceptions can be made for motivated masters students. Participants of previous Venice Summer Schools in Evo-Devo are expressly encouraged to reapply as this course has an entirely different topic than previous editions. The course will equip participants with the conceptual tools to engage in a productive discussion of the notion of “characters,” and to relate this notion to their own research questions and explanations.

EMBO Workshop — When predictions meet experiments: The future of structure determination

Figuring out the “protein folding problem”, that is predicting protein structure from the amino acid sequence, has stood as a grand challenge in biology for the past 50 years. Thanks to the efforts of several generations of structural biologists, bioinformatics experts and artificial intelligence (AI), the organisers of the biennial Critical Assessment of protein Structure Prediction (CASP) competition have declared the AlphaFold program as a solution to this grand challenge. This major breakthrough has demonstrated the impact that AI can have on scientific discovery and its potential to dramatically accelerate progress in fundamental fields. At the same time, however, predictions should not be perceived as a way to substitute experimental work. Important challenges are still ahead of us: intrinsically disordered or multidomain proteins, large complexes. The new tools should be used not to stop structural biology but to push its frontiers. The present workshop is thus meant to fill the gap between experimentalists and computational scientists, provide mutual feedback and constitute a forum to promote and facilitate the dialogue on how AI predictions can be integrated in the normal practice of structure determination to increase the capabilities of both experimentalists and computational scientists.

We would like to invite you to The 4th ISFMS: Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Druggability of Proteins, which will be held in the wonderful city of Florence, Italy, in the period September 6-9, 2022. The conference will be hosted at the University of Florence, in the biomedical campus nearby the main city hospital, which is easily accessible from the airport, train station or city center. Apart the high quality science which will be presented during the event, our fantastic location will afford the possibility to visit the city in which Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Galileo Galilei (to mention just a few personalities) lived and created some of their unique artistic and scientific masterpieces. The friendly and peaceful atmosphere of our city will surely favor nice scientific interactions and the possibility to establish interesting contacts with scientists from all over the world in a collaborative manner.

It also aims to promote collaborations, to update the nomenclature, and to foster initiatives that, ultimately, will help scientists in biomedical research to capitalize on the opportunities offered by this new field of cell biology. To that end, this year’s edition features an extended program and a large number of long- and short-talks to be selected from submitted abstracts.

EMBO Workshop — The endoplasmic reticulum: The master regulator of membrane trafficking

This EMBO Workshop will include new discoveries that surround the ER's historical and important role in regulating the translation, translocation and folding of membrane and secreted proteins of the secretory pathway. It will further include new insights into the signaling pathways that allow the ER to correct for cell stress, the unfolded protein response, and maintaining lipid homeostasis. Recent years have also revealed emerging and unexpected new functions for this old organelle in regulating the biogenesis of other organelles at membrane contact sites (MCSs). These MCSs have generated much excitement in cell biology because they are hybrid locations where the elaborate ER network can communicate with other organelles through calcium signaling, lipid metabolism, and the recruitment of machineries that modify membrane shape, trafficking and division. They reveal that not every membrane bound component traffics through vesicles, rather many move directly at positions where the ER is tethered and apposed to the plasma membrane and other organelles to rapidly communicate signals across the cell that can maintain homeostasis. Disruption of ER homeostasis and ER structure is a hallmark of various diseases. Thus, understanding basic mechanisms controlling ER functions may provide insight into a broad range of pathologies.
