EMBO Lecture Course — Venice Summer School: The future of evolutionary-developmental systems biology
21 aou 2023 - 25 aou 2023 • Venise, Italie
Organisateur:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Résumé:
Any adequate theory of evolutionary change must cover both the sources and the consequences of phenotypic variation. On the one hand, we must understand the various processes—genetic, metabolic, physiological, developmental, and behavioral—that generate variation. On the other hand, we must understand the sorting processes that lead to the differential survival of different variants. The latter aspect is covered by traditional evolutionary genetics, with its well-developed set of concepts and models. In contrast, there seems to be no overarching theory or unifying framework able to explain the enormous diversity of processes generating variation. These processes are not only dauntingly complex, but also occur at many different levels of organization—from the molecular to the cellular, tissue, organ, organismic, and even supra-organismic levels (ecological or social). We could conclude from this that no theory of the sources of variation is possible, or we could call for a novel, empirically grounded, organismic systems biology that integrates philosophical, mathematical, and experimental approaches to tackle the issue. We will look at this project from a broad theoretical vantage point to assess the future of evolutionary and developmental systems biology.

EMBO Workshop — When biology of endocytosis meets physics: Emerging mechanisms and functions
10 sep 2023 - 15 sep 2023 • Venice , Italie
Organisateur:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Résumé:
This EMBO Workshop strives to connect disciplines from different fast-moving fields linked to endocytosis, which require a common forum to discuss the latest developments and future directions in an integrated fashion. The final goal is to uncover novel molecular and cellular networks involving endocytosis by providing concrete examples of how collaborations between researchers from different disciplines are currently leading to fundamental discoveries.

EMBO Workshop — Inter-organelle contacts biology
01 oct 2023 - 06 oct 2023 • Fiuggi, Italie
Organisateur:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Résumé:
For decades, studies in cell biology have focused on discovering the functions and dynamics of individual organelles. However, organelles do not exist only as single units, but also as part of entities formed through contacts between two or more distinct organelles. In fact, the recent years of studies on inter-organelle contacts have revealed that complex cellular functions, biochemical processes and signaling pathways are governed at the sites where heterotypic organelles come into contact with each other. This paradigm shift has spurred a new gold rush of research in cell biology that is transforming our understanding of cell physiology, signaling and metabolism in health and disease. This EMBO Workshop on inter-organelle contacts biology, now at its 3rd edition, aims at bringing together the community of scientists in this field to share their work, experience, expertise, and vision.
