25 jan 2022 - 26 jan 2022 • Virtual Event, n’importe où (en ligne)
Organisateur:
European Association for Cancer Research (EACR) and Metastasis Research Society (MRS)
Résumé:
We invite you to join us at the 3rd joint EACR-MRS Conference on Seed and Soil: In Vivo Models of Metastasis. This is a joint conference organised by the European Association for Cancer Research (EACR) and Metastasis Research Society (MRS). Metastasis formation is responsible for over 90% of cancer patient deaths, largely due to the general ineffectiveness of therapies against detectable metastatic tumors. There is a crucial need to mechanistically understand the cellular, tissue and whole-body processes driving metastasis formation in order to identify effective therapeutic strategies. This conference will give an in-depth overview of our current knowledge on cancer, stromal, and metabolism-centred mechanisms promoting metastasis formation presented by world-leading researchers in the field. The meeting will conclude with a discussion forum on how to translate emerging findings on metastasis into patient benefit.

The Structural Microenvironment: Breaking down the walls of cancer
22 fév 2022 - 23 fév 2022 • Virtual Event, n’importe où (en ligne)
Organisateur:
European Association For Cancer Research (ECAR)
Résumé:
The study of the tumour microenvironment has completely transformed our cancer cell-centric view of tumour biology. Fibroblasts, immune cells, blood vessels and the extracellular matrix work in concert to establish an environment permissive for the growth and survival of the cancer cells and for their metastatic dissemination. A deeper understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in shaping the tumour microenvironment has revealed that their perturbation has profound consequences on tumour progression and that they are an attractive set of novel therapeutic approaches to treat cancer. This first EACR meeting on the Structural Microenvironment will gather top experts in the field to discuss structural alterations that accompany cancer development and how we can exploit them to treat cancer.

Evolution of Cancer
23 mar 2022 - 25 mar 2022 • Bad Honnef, Allemagne
Organisateur:
WE-Heraeus foundation, Physikzentrum Bad Honnef
Résumé:
Populations of cancer cells are not static, but keep evolving over the different stages of the disease. This complex evolutionary dynamics is shaped by inherently stochastic contributions (such as mutations and reproductive fluctuations) as well as deterministic components (such as selection for faster growth). For this reason, statistical models are key to modelling and analyzing the evolution of tumours. Over the last decades, the sequencing of DNA from cancer biopsies has fundamentally changed our understanding of the evolution of cancer. Genomic data sampled across different patients and over time allows to address fundamental questions on how tumours develop, which genetic changes lead to rapid growth, or how a population of diverse tumour cells evolves under cancer therapy. Answering such questions on the basis of empirical data requires statistical models of cancer evolution, both to infer the past dynamics from current data and to derive predictions, for instance on the response to therapy. This seminar will give an overview over the current state of cancer evolution research and the statistical models used to understand cancer genomic data. It will include tutorials on statistical physics and inference, cancer evolution, and cancer genomics, as well as lectures on the current state of the field by international specialists. The seminar is for MSc and PhD students and young researchers in physics (in particular statistical physics and biophysics), population genetics, and evolutionary biology.

13th European Breast Cancer Conference
23 mar 2022 - 25 mar 2022 • Barcelona, Espagne
Résumé:
Even though over 80% of breast cancer patients survive for more than 5 years, the disease is still prevalent, reducing the survival and quality of life of patients. In 1998, the European Breast Cancer Conference was set up to provide a platform for breast cancer specialists and patients to discuss the multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer care. It provided the specialists with the latest updates in treatment. It was the first conference of its kind, which had a patient advocacy organisation as a partner, ensuring that latest information reached the patients. A truly multidisciplinary collaboration and education is needed in breast cancer with an approach to provide equality across borders.

EMBO Workshop — The many faces of cancer evolution
20 mai 2022 - 22 mai 2022 • Rimini , Italie
Organisateur:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Résumé:
Research in the last few years has focused on the emergence and selection of genetic variants affecting protein functions. However, coding genes represent 2% of the human genome, tumor cells exhibit a wide variety of non-genetic (or epigenetic) alterations, and aberrant transcriptional programs ultimately determine cancer cell phenotypes. The role of the non-coding genome and epigenetic and transcriptional heterogeneity are only now emerging as alternative fuel for tumour evolution, sustained by technological advances to explore tumour heterogeneity at single cell and spatial resolution. This EMBO Workshop will bring together an interdisciplinary community of scientists with the goal of facilitating discussion and collaborations around genetic and non-genetic mechanisms of cancer evolution. The primary objective is to expand the current genetic-centric view with a mechanistic perspective centred around transcriptional and epigenetic alterations.

EMBO Workshop — Persistent cancer cell: Molecular mechanisms, dynamic models towards therapy
28 jui 2022 - 01 jul 2022 • Cavtat, Croatie
Organisateur:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Résumé:
The most important factor that limits the success of anti-cancer therapy is the emergence of drug resistance. At a time where we seem to have reached a limit in terms of genetic mutation driven-treatment efficacy in multiple cancer types, i.e. with a best overall survival around 30-36 months in melanoma but still more than one third of deaths after two years, there is an urgent international need for innovative strategies to combat the resistance. The milestone discovery of drug-tolerant cancer persistent cells suggests that drug resistance might derive from genetically similar clones. Indeed, advances during the past decade show that persistent cancer cells are the discrete and usually undetected cells that survive cancer drug treatment and constitute a major cause of treatment failure. This workshop will provide a unique opportunity to promote communication among biologists, mathematicians and clinicians, which will enable interdisciplinary discussions and collaborations for this fasting emerging domain. The sessions will start with understanding molecular mechanisms of cancer persistence, and will continue with discovering therapeutic targets of persistent cells, deciphering their heterogeneity at single cell level, learning from the microbial persister world, and modelling of the dynamics of persistent cells.

EMBO | FEBS Lecture Course — Molecular mechanisms in signal transduction and cancer
16 aou 2022 - 24 aou 2022 • Spetses , Grèce
Organisateur:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Résumé:
We are living in an extremely interesting period in cancer research. Knowledge gained in the last decades is now entering the clinic and new findings are translated into the clinic at a pace never seen before. Most of the successes come from our understanding of basic processes that govern cancer initiation and progression, including signal transduction. Consequently, we see that especially inhibitors to signalling molecules, in particular kinases, are entering the clinic very rapidly. Therefore, the molecular mechanisms by which signals are received by cells, transduced towards the proper targets and integrated into a biological response is amongst the most-studied areas in modern biology. In this EMBO|FEBS Lecture Course we are bringing together a number of true experts in the field from basic and translational oncology. This MBO|FEBS Lecture Course will cover signalling by various pathways (PI3K, WNT, RAS/RAF) but also DNA damage and protein degradation signalling. We will also cover the consequences of pathway deregulation for cellular processes like metabolism and damage repair. Finally, the application or translation of this knowledge into the clinic will be discussed by the speakers.

The study of cancer metabolism has changed our view of tumour biology. Cancer and stromal cells alter their metabolic wiring in order to meet the energetic and anabolic demands, to cope with external insults, to survive in hostile environments and to alter the molecular properties of the niche they inhabit. In this context, it is not surprising that genomic and cellular signalling perturbations have profound consequences on the metabolic landscape. The 2nd EACR Conference on Cancer Metabolism will gather top experts in the field to discuss the metabolic alterations in tumours and how we can exploit it to treat cancer. The city of Bilbao in Spain will continue to host the conference and bring together excellent research and a unique environment.
