This 2½ day course aims to give chemists and chemical engineers a thorough practical knowledge of crystallisation processes. After an introduction the course will cover crystallisation of compounds (including hydrates and solvates), different methods of crystallisation, polymorphism, salts and co-crystals, crystallisation of chiral compounds and classical resolution, analytical methods for studying the solid state and will finish with some case studies. Real life practical examples will be used throughout the course to exemplify the different aspects of crystallisation and polymorphism. The course will cover all aspects of the subject including crystallization of intermediates as well as final products. In addition, precipitations and amorphous solids will be covered and the differences between amorphous solids and crystalline solids will be discussed.

The aim of this course is to provide attendees with a good basis to work from when involved in taking development candidates to the first in human trials with a view also on some longer-term requirements. The course content will therefore focus on the necessary early phases of chemical development as would typically be required to support production of up to about 2kg using laboratory-based 20L equipment and pilot plant equipment.

This three-day course, written and presented by highly experienced process chemists from the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industry, provides a comprehensive foundational overview of this fascinating and important element of the chemical industry. A logical investigative approach to all aspects of chemical development is described, with an abundance of case studies from literature, conferences and private communications.
