Elastic anisotropy, widely recognized as a typical feature of sedimentary formations, has a strong influence on seismic velocities and amplitudes. For example, the difference between stacking and vertical velocity in anisotropic media most commonly is the reason for misties in time-to-depth conversion. This course provides the necessary background information regarding anisotropic wave propagation and discusses modeling, inversion, and processing of seismic reflection data in the presence of anisotropy.

The focus of the Clay Conference is clay as host rock for geological disposal of radioactive waste and the use of compacted swelling clays as an engineered barrier component. Considering design, construction, operation and post-closure, the Clay Conference provides a unique networking platform for sharing scientific and technological knowledge. This involves gathering together experienced specialists and newcomers from various disciplines related to clays, as well as scientists and technicians from organisations engaged in radioactive waste disposal or in other uses of the subsurface in which clay barriers play an important role. We particularly encourage young scientists in all fields of nuclear safety and waste management to present their research findings at the Clay Conference 2024.

GeoMandu is an international conference series of Nepal Geotechnical Society. The First GeoMandu was held on 17-18 March 2023, which was initially planned for May 2021 but due to COVID-19 situation, it was postponed to March 2023. The overwhelming support of all our sponsors and wellwishers and a more-than-expected interest of our local participants and members have truly fascinated us for an even better and even more successful event in November 2024!

As a developing nation with an insignificant number of geotechnical engineering-related infrastructures so far, Nepal has recognized geotechnical engineering still as a minor field of engineering! Today, however, there are many ongoing national pride infrastructure development projects including four-lane fast track highway construction, roadway tunnels, multipurpose high gravity dams, underground structures, long-span bridges, heavy aircraft runways, and many others that necessitates precise knowledge of geotechnical engineering in order to reduce the risk of geo-infra disasters in future. So, through this conference series, we expect that the geotechnical engineering community in Nepal will be able to appeal to all stakeholders of Nepal as well as to our international colleagues our unique geohazard types, and geo-infra disaster issues of the Nepal Himalaya and share the problems and learn about the solutions.

Stimulations of rocks by fluid injections (e.g., hydraulic fracturing) belong to a standard reservoir-development practice. Productions of shale oil, shale gas, heavy oil, and geothermal energy require broad applications of this technology. Production of conventional hydrocarbons, carbon sequestration, saltwater disposal and development of geological gas storages require massive fluid operations in the underground as well. The fact that fluid injections and productions can induce seismicity has been well-established for several decades. Understanding and monitoring of fluid-induced seismicity is necessary for hydraulic characterization of reservoirs, for assessments of reservoir stimulation results and for controlling the seismic risk of underground fluid injections and productions. The course provides systematic quantitative rock-physical and geomechanical fundamentals of these aspects.

Following two successful editions held in Singapore and Hong Kong in 2019 and 2022, respectively, we are thrilled to bring this event to South Korea. Our primary objective is to showcase and deliberate on the lessons acquired and advancements made in geophysical techniques applied to smart city solutions. Emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration with civil engineering and digital technologies, our focus spans hardware sensor innovation and the assessment of social and environmental implications of these technologies.

The series of Asia-Pacific conferences on unsaturated soils began in Singapore in 2000 with a strong emphasis on both the theoretical aspect and practical significance of unsaturated soil mechanics in the region. The conferences have provided a forum for researchers and practitioners in the region and beyond to present their latest developments and exchange ideas in the subject, with strong relevance to problems in the region such as heave/desiccation shrinkage, collapse, rainfall-induced slope instability, contaminant transport, etc. The latest developments in unsaturated soil mechanics will also lead to a much better understanding and solution of many emerging problems such as soil/atmosphere interaction, thermal and chemical influence, and climate change.

The workshop aims to explore current best practices and developments in land and shallow water seismic processing for maximizing the value of legacy data and exploiting the entire potential of the newly acquired full azimuth, long offset broadband data. We will discuss the latest solutions such as deblending, model-based noise attenuation, statics, full waveform inversion, 5D data reconstruction, attenuation and imaging with multiples, velocity model building, and migration, in addition to other emerging processing technologies.
