Axions across boundaries between Particle Physics, Astrophysics, Cosmology and forefront Detection Technologies
26. Apr 2023 - 09. Jun 2023 • Galileo Galilei Institute for Theoretical Physics, Florence, Italien
Veranstalter:
Galileo Galilei Institute
Zusammenfassung:
The purpose of this workshop is to bring together scientists with different backgrounds and expertise to discuss open problems, recent developments and future directions in axion physics, a field that is notoriously replete with interdisciplinary connections. The aim is to foster a fruitful cross breeding between different theoretical areas, with a focus on certain open issues in axion particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology. Quantitative assessments of the axion contribution to Cold Dark Matter (CDM) involve top-notch lattice simulations of non- perturbative QCD effects, as well as of the cosmic evolution of axionic topological defects. Astrophysical observations provide strong bounds on axion properties because stellar evolution would be affected by the existence of axions and, intriguingly, some excesses in star energy losses have been reported. Cosmological scenarios in which the PQ symmetry is broken before inflation foresee axions imprints in the CMB, while in post-inflationary scenarios axion miniclusters, with overdensities several orders of magnitude larger than the local density of CDM, are expected to form, and a reliable assessment of their properties is of utmost importance. From the experimental side, a blossoming of potentially game-changing ideas, with an exciting crossover from experimental particle physics to materials science and cutting-edge technologies is inspiring new methods for axion searches. Novel techniques have been put forth that, besides exploiting the axion- photon coupling, aim to reveal axions via their couplings to nucleons and electrons. The interaction between the experimental and theoretical communities will foster the merging of `how to search’ with `where to search’ into optimized strategies to hunt for the axion.

Course — Distributed acoustic sensing for seismic measurements – what geophysicists and engineers need to know
04. Mai 2023 - 05. Mai 2023 • Rio De Janeiro, Brasilien
Zusammenfassung:
Geoscientists and engineers are very comfortable using seismic data sets acquired with geophones, hydrophones, and accelerometers because we have a long, well-defined set of standards for acquiring, processing, and interpreting them. However, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) seismic measurements are rapidly augmenting, and in some cases replacing, the data from these conventional tools. Technologists are frequently unaccustomed to using DAS seismic data sets since it directly acquires relative strain or strain rate measurements and not the more familiar pressure, displacement, velocity, and acceleration data. There are also acquisition parameter selections that must be made to optimize the acquired data to accomplish the purpose of the seismic survey. This course is designed to build an intuition and understanding of the value, limitations, and applications of DAS seismic technology. In addition to the lecture and accompanying book, software will be provided, which will allow the student to interactively explore DAS seismic technology.

The Present and Future of Heavy Flavour and Exotic Hadron Spectroscopy
08. Mai 2023 - 02. Jun 2023 • München, Deutschland
Veranstalter:
MIAPbP - Munich Institute for Astro-, Particle and BioPhysics
Zusammenfassung:
A major goal in strong-interaction physics is to understand the nature of hadrons, which make up visible matter, and much research activity revolves around two fundamental questions: what are hadrons made up of and how does Quantum Chromo-dynamics (QCD), the strong-interaction component of the Standard Model, produce them? Although these questions are simple, the answers may not be. To address these questions, spectroscopy is a valuable and time-honored tool, as it enables us to understand the structure of mesons, baryons and exotics and how they are produced. In this context, the recent discovery of many new hadronic states, in particular the plethora of observed X, Y, Z states, is exciting, as these objects challenge the commonplace view of hadrons as either quark-antiquark or three-quark color-singlet states.

09. Okt 2023 - 12. Okt 2023 • Tutzing, Deutschland
Veranstalter:
Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS), Forschungszentrum Jülich
Zusammenfassung:
The neutron landscape has undergone some changes in recent years after the closure of several research reactors in Europe. Therefore, making available state-of-the-art new high-performance neutron sources with an optimized range of instruments is one of the issues that is occupying the modern neutron scatterer community. For their construction there is now an increasing focus on alternative techniques to nuclear fission, such as pulsed sources and, among these, accelerator-driven, low-energy compact neutron sources are considered worldwide to be the next generation for a wide range of applications.

The JCNS Workshop 2023 will be dedicated to future instruments at pulsed sources and it will have the aim of discussing the last and new developments in instrumentation for such sources together with the new opportunities offered by complementary techniques and by industrial applications.
