In this WE-Heraeus seminar, we will explore the opportunities and challenges related to the integration of color centers into photonic and electronic nanofabricated devices, a key topic in scaling this platform. The program spans materials science, nanofabrication, photonics, electronics, and quantum sensing, combining perspectives from leading figures in academia, industry, and policy.

The 2nd International Conference and Exhibition on Nanotechnology and NanoScience (ICENN2026) will be held on August 24–26, 2026, in Toronto, Canada. Self-driven or active polymers and filaments are ubiquitous in biology across length scales, from chromatin in the nucleus to cytoskeletal filaments such as actin and microtubules, and from motile filamentous cyanobacteria to macroscopic worms. Inspired by these systems, synthetic analogs such as biomimetic robotic worms and robotic grippers or active materials based on cytoskeletal filaments have been developed. These systems display diverse structural and dynamic behaviors, both individually and collectively: examples include spiral and helical conformations, vortex formation in motor-driven microtubules, coexisting ordered states in actin-myosin networks, morphogenesis of cyanobacterial colonies during blooms, dynamical neural-motor loops in C. elegans, and emergent collective locomotion in worm blobs.

This workshop will bring together leading scientists from multiple fields to identify common features of active filament systems, clarify the mechanisms driving their self-organization, and define overarching open questions.

The scope of this symposium ranges across the broad spectrum of nanotechnology and nanoscience, including, but not limited to: / Biological and bioinspired structures: research on materials and phenomena in biological systems, basic research on the properties of biological nanostructures, translational biomimetic approaches and application of bioinspired technology. / Composition/structure/-property correlations: atomic-, nano-, and micro-scale materials design, multi-scale modeling for structure evolution, preparation and processing of nanostructured materials, characterization techniques for nanostructures, mechanical behavior and functional performance evaluation method. / Nanomaterials and their device applications: design of nanomaterials, nanodevice development, and their applications, including bio/chemical sensing and therapy. / Surface-engineered nanoparticles for enhancing enzyme activity: development of nanomaterials that bind to and dynamically tune enzyme activity for various applications.
