Wilhelm and Else Heraeus-Foundation

This seminar is dedicated to a highly important topic in current biophysical research - the development and use of fluorescent markers for advanced fluorescence methods such as high-resolution fluorescence microscopy or single-molecule studies in living cells. Indeed, more and more laboratories around the world are committed to implementing these advanced microscopy techniques, with an increasing number of dedicated platforms. However, there is a lack of overall knowledge about the selection of fluorescent markers, their photophysical properties, and the type of artifacts they can create. The seminar’s objective, through interdisciplinary discussion and courses at the interface between physics, chemistry and biology, is to overcome this gap by transferring knowledge to the participants’ laboratories. Our seminar also aims to make participants aware of new developments in the field in order to prepare them to become major players in the breakthroughs that may result from them. The seminar is aimed at PhD students and young scientists as well as research engineers and experienced researchers exploring new areas.

The International Conference on X-ray Microscopy (XRM) is a biennial event that has brought together experts in X-ray microscopes, imaging methods, and related techniques since 1983. Featuring lectures, research presentations, posters, exhibitors, and networking opportunities, XRM highlights the latest advancements in X-ray microscopy technology and its applications across various scientific fields. The 17th edition of the conference, XRM 2026, will take place from August 31 to September 4, 2026, in Campinas, state of São Paulo, Brazil

A challenge in the development of the field is the wide variety of background knowledge that is necessary to tackle the challenges: physicists often struggle with developing efficient and high-performance algorithms, while not many computer scientists have the in-depth physical understanding to develop novel microscopy schemes. Mathematical developments concern novel simulation and optimization schemes, convergence guarantees, etc. For sustained progress, the development of an interdisciplinary exchange and, in the mid-term, the development of a cohesive subfield is a necessity.
