Complex Systems Summer School — A Study of Complex Behavior in Systems
12 jui 2022 - 08 jul 2022 • Santa Fe, États-Unis
Organisateur:
Santa Fe Institute (SFI)
Résumé:
Complex Systems Summer School (CSSS) offers an intensive four-week introduction to complex behavior in mathematical, physical, living, and social systems. CSSS brings together graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and professionals to transcend disciplinary boundaries, take intellectual risks, and ask big questions about complex systems. The residential program comprises a series of lectures and workshops devoted to theory and tools, applications-focused seminars, and discussions with faculty and fellow participants. CSSS participants put what they learn from these didactic sessions into practice through group research projects, conducted throughout the program and often extending into manuscripts and longer-term collaborations. CSSS provides an unparalleled opportunity for early-career researchers to expand their professional networks, produce a novel research product, and gain valuable experience working in transdisciplinary teams.

SNC — Stochastic Networks Conference
20 jui 2022 - 24 jui 2022 • Ithaca, New York, États-Unis
Organisateur:
Cornell University
Résumé:
Stochastic networks is a multifaceted area of research concerned with the modeling, stability, control, performance, approximation, and design of stochastic networks. It gives rise to challenging and subtle mathematical problems, whose solution often requires a combination of ideas and techniques from several branches of mathematics, including probability theory, stochastic processes, analysis, optimization, algorithms, combinatorics, and graph theory. Research in this area is strongly motivated by applications in diverse domains, ranging from the traditional areas of telecommunications and manufacturing to service operations, biological and social networks, revenue management, and health care. The series of conferences on Stochastic Networks, initiated in 1987 and now held biennially, is a major forum for researchers to learn of the latest developments and new research directions in stochastic networks.

Interdisciplinary Network Analysis Methods for Analyzing Social Systems
27 jui 2022 - 01 jul 2022 • Providence, Ri, États-Unis
Organisateur:
ICERM
Résumé:
The goal of this workshop is to introduce participants to interdisciplinary collaborations and conversations in network science that are advancing social justice research through the study of social structures. This workshop will bring together social scientists, digital humanists, computational scientists, and mathematicians with experience in network theory and network analysis in social systems. This workshop will also showcase how mixed methods research (which combines qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis) with multidisciplinary perspectives leads to deeper insights and more ethical and responsible approaches. Workshop organizers will lead tutorials in the mathematics of network theory, finding and working with network data, and qualitative methods for networks in the social sciences. We will emphasize and showcase the use of a critical lens throughout the process, from model building to data collection and analysis, connecting us to a broader dialogue about algorithmic justice and the potential benefits and pitfalls of mathematical models. Participants will also have the option to engage in virtual interdisciplinary working groups continuing after the workshop, focused on problems in application areas including community organizing, education, social media and information dissemination, and healthcare.

Summer Graduate School — Random Graphs
05 jul 2022 - 16 jul 2022 • Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Berkeley, États-Unis
Organisateur:
Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MRSI)
Résumé:
The topic of random graphs is at the forefront of applied probability, and it is one of the central topics in multidisciplinary science where mathematical ideas are used to model and understand the real world. At the same time, random graphs pose challenging mathematical problems that have attracted the attention from probabilists and combinatorialists since the 1960, with the pioneering work of Erdös and Rényi. Around the turn of the millennium, very large data sets started to become available, and several applied disciplines started to realize that many real-world networks, even though they are from various different origins, share many fascinating features. In particular, many of such networks are small worlds, meaning that graph distances in them are typically quite small, and they are scalefree, in the sense that there are enormous differences in the number of connections that their elements make. In particular, such networks are quite different from the classical random graph models, such as proposed by Erdös and Rényi. Spurred by these findings, many novel models have been introduced and properties have been investigated.

Math of the Brain
29 aou 2022 - 02 sep 2022 • Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM), Los Angeles, États-Unis
Résumé:
This workshop will explore a unique combination of data- and model-driven approach by inviting mathematicians and scientists focusing on neurosciences and beyond. We will have an in-depth discussion of data-driven modeling techniques, dynamics reconstruction and characterization over multiple scales treating the underlying systems as structures in space as well as structures in time. Problems to be discussed include: predicting critical transitions from multivariate time series; extracting interactions between brain areas and the effects of anaesthetics; understanding the effects pathologies in the network connectivity and modeling ways to alleviate them; introducing and studying models that depart from functional connectivity. This workshop will include a poster session; a request for posters will be sent to registered participants in advance of the workshop.
