2019 IMB Conference “Chromosome Territories & Nuclear Architecture”

Zusammenfassung:
A fundamental property of genomes is their topological organisation in the 3D space of the cell nucleus. Methodological advances in microscopy and genomics have paved new ways for studying the genome architecture at unprecedented spatial resolution. Emerging evidence has uncovered basic principles of genome organisation and pointed to its key roles in gene expression, genome maintenance and human disease, yet, the genome structure-to-function relationship remains elusive. This three-day conference will bring together experts focusing on: (i) the mechanistic basis of chromatin interactions and structure, (ii) the recent advances in modeling chromosome organization and dynamics, and (iii) the contribution of nuclear organisation in health and disease.

EMBL Course: Circulating Tumour DNA in Clinical Applications

Zusammenfassung:
Minimally invasive liquid biopsies have recently emerged as novel diagnostic methods which hold the promise to monitor disease progression, detect minimal residual disease, therapy resistance and potentially even early cancer detection. Participants will gain hands-on experience in the detection of cell free tumor DNA (cfDNA) using a next generation sequencing (NGS) approach that covers all four mutation classes in a single assay. Critical aspects on recent developments to increase analytical sensitivity and mitigate sequencing errors (computational error correction) will be discussed as well as annotation, interpretation, and clinical reporting of liquid biopsy tests. Lectures will cover the evaluation of ctDNA as biomarkers, clinical applications, emerging analytes for liquid biopsy and important challenges.

EMBO Practical Course: Microbial Metagenomics: A 360º Approach

Zusammenfassung:
The course focuses on the highly interdisciplinary topic of metagenomics. During the course, participants will receive an overview of state-of-the-art genomic technologies and bioinformatic tools. A balanced approach of lectures and practical sessions will provide a general background and the latest advancements in the field as well as its relationship with other disciplines. The course will start with training the participants about experimental design and the preparation of their own metagenomic libraries with soil or their (environmental) samples. The metagenomic DNA will be sequenced onsite using third generation sequencing technologies and subsequent data analysis. Thus, the students have a unique opportunity to work on the complete workflow from sample preparation to data analysis. This updated course version will also address cutting-edge single-cell microbial genomics during practical. Bioinformatics analysis is a key part of the course, where students will learn how to process data from raw sequences to the application of algorithms for analysing metagenomic datasets. Trainers will provide short lectures with follow-up hands-on exercises in order to have the participants learning and assessing their knowledge.

The main objective of this conference is to bring people together from diverse disciplines to exchange ideas, promote cross-disciplinary collaborations and to form a synthesis of appropriate systems-level approaches. The meeting is therefore purposely broad to cover all aspects of genomics to systems biology, a unique combination that is highly appreciated by the participants. Over the past decade, this EMBL conference has therefore served as an important venue in helping to shape the field, or to be more precise to help generate a community of scientists that come from very diverse disciplines, each with the common goal to understand the systems level properties of their system of interest.

EMBL Course: Single-Cell Omics

Zusammenfassung:
The analysis of single cells advances research in many fields. To properly deal with such minute amounts of sample, each step of the workflow is critical, from sampling to data analysis. Additionally, the integration of data from different approaches is becoming increasingly important to capture the whole picture. This course will cover established techniques from sampling through sequencing, protein analysis and data analysis. Samples will be collected via flow cytometry, gene expression will be analysed by qRTPCR and next generation sequencing, and protein analysis will be performed by proximity extension assays. In addition, alternative methods for the whole workflow will be covered in interactive sessions of lectures and Q&A with key experts in the field. Data collected by the different methods will be analysed during in-depth sessions, which are a strong component of the course.
