IUBMB-EMBO Focused Meeting on Emerging Concepts of the Neuronal Cytoskeleton — 6th Edition
26. Mär 2023 - 30. Mär 2023 • Santa Cruz, Chile
Veranstalter:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Zusammenfassung:
Cytoskeletal dynamics is at the core of the most essential questions in cellular neurobiology, such as mechanisms of axon growth in development and in response to injury, or mechanisms of synapse formation and stabilization. It is also a key element of intracellular transport, which is critical for axonal development and neurotrophic signaling, but which is also disrupted in many, if not all neurodegenerative diseases. Consequently, the cytoskeleton in neurons is a promising and emerging target for the development of novel therapeutic approaches to treat neurodegenerative diseases and to promote axon regeneration after traumatic injury. Recent advances in imaging, genetics and cell-molecular biology have catalyzed exciting new progress. However, fundamental questions about how neuronal cytoskeletal assembly, functions and dysfunction is orchestrated remain unanswered. In this workshop we will explore the latest findings on this exciting topic and will address several features involved in cytoskeleton function in nerve cells such its role in trafficking and transport, neuronal polarity, axonal guidance and neuronal migration.

Gordon Research Conference — Dendrites: Molecules, Structure and Function
26. Mär 2023 - 31. Mär 2023 • Lucca (Barga), LU, Italien
Zusammenfassung:
The Dendrites Gordon Research Conference reflects the growing understanding that dendrites might play a central role in neuronal computation. It has long been understood that up to thousands of synaptic inputs can arrive at different locations along a neuron’s dendrites and that the subsequent integrative process ultimately determines that neuron’s output. Recent advances in molecular, electrophysiological, and imaging techniques have led to a new picture of dendrites, and a deeper understanding of their computational role. In many instances, the dendrites themselves can be the engines of active processes that contribute to computation at the cellular and network levels.

EMBO Practical Course — Measuring translational dynamics by ribosome profiling
26. Mär 2023 - 01. Apr 2023 • Heidelberg, Deutschland
Veranstalter:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Zusammenfassung:
Regulation of translation is key in the control of gene expression, playing a critical role in many biological and pathophysiological settings. In the last decade, methodological advances have provided comprehensive insights into cellular transcriptomes and proteomes, however, the systems-wide analysis of translation remained an unsolved experimental challenge. The advent of ‘ribosome-profiling’ provided the methodological basis for comprehensive transcriptome-wide analyses of translation at sub-codon resolution by the precise and high-throughput determination of ribosomal positions on mRNA. Its application in a variety of organisms yielded novel insights into protein synthesis and its dynamic regulation, significantly advancing our understanding of the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression.

EMBO Workshop — ImmunoBiophysics: From fundamental physics to understanding the immune response
09. Apr 2023 - 14. Apr 2023 • Les Houches – hybrid, Frankreich
Veranstalter:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Zusammenfassung:
Immune cells respond in a coordinated way to protect us from harmful pathogens like viruses and bacteria. The responses are mediated largely through direct cell-cell contacts, which allow cells to exchange biochemical signals and mechanical inputs. The contribution of mechanical forces to molecular and cellular function has fascinated biologists and physicists alike for more than a decade, and in recent years it has become evident that mechanical forces are fundamental to immune cell function. This workshop aims to address the important challenge of bridging the gap between molecular and cellular scales processes driving immune cell mechanotransduction. Motivated by exciting developments in the field, this EMBO Workshop, “ImmunoBiophysics #2: From fundamental physics to understanding the immune response” will focus on the immune response from a distinctly physical and mechanical perspective, bringing together experimentalists and theoreticians coming from both the physical and life science communities. Building on the highly successful virtual “ImmunoBiophysics” workshop held in 2021, this hybrid EMBO Workshop will promote collaborations on this emerging topic and foster a new transdisciplinary perspective

EMBO Workshop — FERROPTOSIS: When metabolism meets cell death
23. Apr 2023 - 27. Apr 2023 • Seeon, Deutschland
Veranstalter:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Zusammenfassung:
Ferroptosis is a regulated necrotic cell death modality which is now recognized as an evolutionary vulnerability caused by the incorporation of oxidation-prone polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) into cellular membranes. This metabolic cell death process provides the framework to understand the basic biological phenomena of how cells restrain, repair and adapt to phospholipid damage through changes in cellular plasticity. A close interplay between cellular metabolism and ferroptosis was established with phospholipid repair linked to numerous metabolic networks including amino acids, glutathione biosynthesis, NAD(P)H and PUFA metabolism, iron handling and the mevalonate pathway. Notably, this complex network has been found to be dysfunctional in different pathological contexts. This EMBO workshop will bring together scientists from different disciplines interested in the molecular mechanisms linked to ferroptosis, such as lipid signalling, redox chemistry, drug discovery, tumour biology, degenrative diseases, medicine and inflammation, and related experts in cell metabolism. This highly interdisciplinary meeting will promote the exchange of ideas and stimulate a critical assessment of the state-of-the-art between students, postdocs and leading researchers from different fields worldwide.

EMBO | EMBL Symposium — Brain genome: regulation, evolution, and function
25. Apr 2023 - 28. Apr 2023 • EMBL Heidelberg and Virtual, Deutschland
Zusammenfassung:
This symposium explores the many ways by which the genome is regulated in the brain in order to support neural function and plasticity. The extraordinary complexity of the brain places unique demands on the genome: How are several hundreds of different neural types specified by the same genetic instructions? Does the genome provide information that guides their connectivity? How is neural activity regulated by and how does it affect genome output? We will explore these fundamental questions from the standpoint of transcriptional regulation and chromatin-based processes, including but not limited to histone marks and variants, chromatin topology and folding, coding and noncoding RNAs, transposable elements, and DNA modifications. The conference aims to bring together neuroscientists and experts in genome regulation. It will cover a broad range of experimental approaches and model systems, from biochemistry to single-cell genomics, from worms to human organoids. Overall, the conference will address the impact of genome regulation on unique features of the brain — its excitable nature, exquisite response to the environment and parallel processing capacity — with the longer-term vision of understanding how defective genome regulation can give rise to brain disease.

Balancing Genome Fidelity and Plasticity
04. Mai 2023 - 07. Mai 2023 • Riviera Maya, Mexiko
Veranstalter:
Fusion Conferences
Zusammenfassung:
While alterations to DNA underlie genome evolution and antibody diversification, genome instability drives many disorders, including cancer, developmental abnormalities, and neurodegeneration. DNA damage and other genome-threatening replication blocks are generally overcome by a number of DNA repair pathways. The choice of DNA repair pathways, specifically the reliance on error-prone vs. error-free is both intriguing and confounding. Moreover, the deregulation of repair pathway choice can trigger pathological processes. In this conference, we will discuss the delicate equilibrium of genome maintenance pathways, addressing how natural processes such as replication and transcription can threaten genome stability, how the genome can be altered in cancer, signatures of genome instability in human disease, and how cells control the inherent plasticity of their replication and repair machinery. We aim to bring together scientists from diverse fields who are interested in understanding the many processes impacting DNA metabolism and the molecular and biophysical principles that maintain the balance between genome stability and plasticity.

EMBO | EMBL Symposium — The organism and its environment
09. Mai 2023 - 12. Mai 2023 • EMBL Heidelberg and Virtual, Deutschland
Zusammenfassung:
We are at the dawn of a new era of biology where we will start to understand how organisms function together and react or adapt to changes at different molecular levels. This includes the multitude of stresses that organisms are exposed to, from malnutrition and adverse climate events to many other biological, chemical and physical insults. Progress in biological analyses at both a single scale and across scales, have allowed us to further understand organisms in the context of dynamic environments. These can be environments which are changed by disease, commensal cohabitation or competition, as well as abiotic factors. With the molecular understanding we already have at the cellular and organismal levels, and new tools and quantitative approaches, this symposium will address how genotype and the environment bring about phenotypes at the population level.

EMBO Workshop — Non-coding RNA medicine
15. Mai 2023 - 18. Mai 2023 • Poznan, Polen
Veranstalter:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Zusammenfassung:
The discovery of myriad noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) over the past decade has revealed a universe of new and exciting therapeutic opportunities. Many thousands of microRNAs, piRNAs, circular RNAs, long noncoding RNAs, and others are expressed across healthy and diseased human tissues and play key functional roles in pathogenic states and processes. Their regulatory roles, cell-type-specificity, and vast numbers confer on ncRNAs unique advantages as therapeutic targets. Rapid advances in clinical transcriptomics, oligonucleotide therapeutics, and RNA-directed small molecules, open the possibility for rapid, economical, and personalised ncRNA-directed therapies. Reaching this goal will require overcoming key challenges, including low evolutionary conservation in model species, poorly-characterised molecular mechanisms, finding hits amongst the vast ncRNA transcriptome, and effectively drugging targets in vivo.

This course will teach the biological researchers how to analyse biological data sets using open-source software. Most of the analysis will be performed with docker4seq and rCASC packages, which was developed to facilitate the use of computing demanding applications in the field of NGS data analysis. Docker4seq and rCASC packages use docker containers that embed demanding computing tasks (e.g. short reads mapping) into isolated containers. This approach provides multiple advantages: the user does not need to install all the software on its local server, the results generated by different containers can be organised in pipelines and reproducible research is guarantee by the possibility of sharing the docker images used for the analysis. Computers for hands-on exercises will be provided along with demo data sets.

EMBO Workshop — Cell polarity and membrane dynamics
21. Mai 2023 - 26. Mai 2023 • Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Girona, Spanien
Veranstalter:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Zusammenfassung:
Cell polarization is an essential first step for many biological processes ranging from cell motility to tissue and organism morphogenesis. At the same time, cell polarization requires a precise control of their internal organization, which is the result of a complex dynamic interplay between the cytoskeleton, molecular motors, signaling molecules, and membranes. Recent technological advances have helped obtaining valuable new information on the different temporal and spatial scales that govern cell polarization. We have obtained structures of membrane-localized protein complexes, demonstrated the emergent self-organizing properties of proteins and cellular systems and shed light on how to modulate the shape of membranes and tissues to build entire tissues or organisms. To develop a mechanistic understanding of these processes, we need to integrate our existing knowledge on cell polarization, from the tissue level down to individual molecules, obtained from minimal reconstituted systems to whole animals, from experimental and theoretical approaches. This EMBO Workshop will bring together a highly diverse group of scientists (cell & structural biologists, (bio)chemists, experimental & theoretical physicists) to present the state-of-the-art of their fields, to exchange ideas, and to identify synergies between them to establish new collaborations and open new research fields.

EMBO Workshop — RNA meets protein decay
24. Mai 2023 - 27. Mai 2023 • Cavtat, Kroatien
Veranstalter:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Zusammenfassung:
RNA and protein degradation play critical roles during dynamic proteome remodeling in response to developmental and environmental cues. Although RNA and protein degradation pathways have often been investigated in isolation, there is a growing interest in understanding how RNA decay and protein degradation systems interact and cooperate to shape both the RNA and protein landscape within cells and tissues. For example, an explosion of recent research has demonstrated that RNA decay and protein degradation cooperate when ribosome progression is halted to facilitate removal of potentially toxic mRNA and/or protein species. Further, regulating the abundance of either RNA or cognate RNA binding proteins can alter the behavior of highly dynamic macromolecular assembles that can form liquid-like condensates and have been linked to various human pathologies. The purpose of this EMBO Workshop is to bring together experts in the RNA decay and protein degradation fields to report on our current understanding of RNA and protein degradation pathway intersections, discover common principles, and share technical expertise on best practices to interrogate RNA or protein turnover.

EMBO Workshop — Non-coding RNA medicine
15. Jun 2023 - 18. Jun 2023 • Poznan, Polen
This EMBO Workshop will bring together colleagues from both academic and commercial worlds to discuss their latest progress in these issues. Sessions will cover the full span from basic disease biology to therapeutic development. Confirmed speakers represent leaders from around the globe, and numerous slots have been set aside for oral presentations selected from submitted abstracts.

EMBO Workshop — European testis workshop 2023
18. Jun 2023 - 22. Jun 2023 • Montreux, Schweiz
Veranstalter:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Zusammenfassung:
Advanced reproductive technologies, such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection, have revolutionized reproductive medicine by enabling effective fertilization without the need to understand the cause of infertility. However, declining male fertility persists in many countries, and growing evidence suggested that the reproductive health of fathers affects their children’s health, calling for continuing investigation of the underlying mechanisms. The main themes of this EMBO Workshop are the male reproductive system, testis development, and sperm formation in mammals, including humans and animal models. Reflecting the multifaceted nature of male reproduction and discoveries made by increasingly advanced experimental techniques, the three broad topics further branch into sub-topics including genetics, epigenetics, immunity, lifestyle influences, toxicity, immunology, and endocrinology. Clinically relevant topics—semen function, sperm physiology, reproductive technologies, and fertility preservation—are also incorporated. This EMBO Workshop aims to bridge the knowledge gap in male reproduction, facilitate networking among research groups with different expertise, and promote the translation of fundamental research in male reproduction into diagnoses and therapies.

EMBO Workshop — Meiosis
18. Jun 2023 - 23. Jun 2023 • Pamhagen , Österreich
Veranstalter:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Zusammenfassung:
Meiosis is a defining feature of sexual reproduction. This specialized cell division program comprises a single round of DNA replication followed by two successive cell divisions, thereby reducing chromosome number by half. This reduction accommodates the later combination of two haploid gametes during fertilization to reconstitute a full diploid genome. The unique events of meiosis, including pairwise alignment of parental chromosomes, inter-homolog recombination, kinetochore attachment, cell cycle adaptations and error correction mechanisms, are intensely studied processes in numerous model organisms (fungi, protists, plants, and animals). The Meiosis field is driven by fascination in how evolution has implemented and perfected the meiotic program, and also by its significance to both plant breeding and human health. As a special topic for the 2021 EMBO Workshop, we have chosen homolog pairing. The recognition and physical pairing of homologous chromosomes is an essential feature of meiosis, and also occurs in other contexts. It is therefore timely to bring together the fields of meiotic and post-meiotic chromosome pairing to potentially uncover common principles and mechanisms.

UBQE — Next Generation Degraders and Glues
20. Jun 2023 - 22. Jun 2023 • London, Großbritannien
Veranstalter:
Cambridge Healthtech Institute
Zusammenfassung:
The ubiquitin-proteasome, lysosome and autophagy systems are all well-controlled, selective degradation pathways that are key cellular regulators in cancer, CNS, and other diseases. A new generation of hetero bi-functional chimeras and small molecule monovalent degraders are being developed to hijack these systems for targeted protein degradation or stabilization. These molecules that include Proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs) and molecular glues are being used to seek out previously “undruggable” targets for therapeutic intervention. However, challenges do exist in terms of specificity, stability, biodistribution and penetration of these degrader molecules. This conference on Next-Generation Degraders & Glues brings together experts in the field to discuss these new therapeutic modalities, as well as issues underlying the use of targeted degradation as a new therapeutic approach.

EMBO Workshop — Eukaryotic RNA turnover and viral biology
20. Jun 2023 - 23. Jun 2023 • Brno , Tschechische Republik
Veranstalter:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Zusammenfassung:
Postponed from 21.09.2021–24.09.2021

Viruses are major human pathogens that cause a wide range of infectious diseases, representing a constantly recurring challenge to the health of individuals and the functioning of human society. Only a profound understanding of viral biology will provide the basis for developing and improving antiviral therapies. While RNA turnover has long been studied in the context of cellular gene regulation and quality control mechanisms, the interplay between RNA turnover and viral life cycles is only now emerging as a key component of virus-host interactions. For example, Herpes viruses, Poxvirus, Influenza virus and SARS-Coronavirus encode ribonucleases that cleave host mRNA and thereby support virus reproduction. Flaviviruses such as Dengue virus, West Nile virus and Hepatitis C virus encode a non-coding RNA that blocks Xrn1, a major cellular exoribonuclease, as a means to escape from an antiviral activity. The endonuclease RNase L is another component of the mammalian antiviral defense system, highlighting the importance of ribonucleases in the encounter of viruses with their host cells.

This EMBO Workshop will bring together molecular biologists working on basic mechanisms controlling RNA turnover with virologists exploring RNA turnover in the context of virus-host interactions, and propel the scientific exchange in this emerging area of research.

Zusammenfassung:
The conference will provide the platform for researchers in the recombination and repair fields to present their new unpublished data that sheds novel insights into not only the mechanisms of DSB repair by recombination, but also the consequences of inaccurate repair leading to cancer. It is now clear that many inheritable cancers, including those linked to defects in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes, are caused by defects in homologous recombination. Understanding the precise mechanisms of recombinational repair is therefore critical for the development of new drugs that can target these diseases and improve human health.

Timescales of Plasticity and Underlying Mechanisms
10. Jul 2023 - 13. Jul 2023 • Santa Barbara, Vereinigte Staaten
Veranstalter:
UC Santa Barbara, Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP)
Zusammenfassung:
A long-standing question in the neurobiology of learning is that of timescales. The brain can associate events that are separated by seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, or longer. Yet, the known biological mechanisms for inducing changes in the synaptic connections between neurons are driven by neural events that are separated by typically no more than a few tens or hundreds of milliseconds. This conference will convene scientists studying the molecular, cellular, and circuit-level mechanisms used by the brain to bridge the multiple timescales across which events play out in the experience of an individual. The goal will be to assemble an up-to-date understanding of the set of biological mechanisms available in the brain to support associative learning across different timescales. The conference's emphasis on biological mechanisms will complement and support the main program’s more computational focus, and encourage an integrated analysis of statistical learning spanning molecular, cellular, circuit, and behavioral-level phenomena.

EMBO | EMBL Symposium — Theory and concepts in biology
18. Jul 2023 - 21. Jul 2023 • EMBL Heidelberg and Virtual, Deutschland
Zusammenfassung:
Recent progress in biology has led to an explosion of factual knowledge about the living world over a huge range of scales in space and time. Yet, many questions about how to make sense of this data remain across the entire diversity of the living world from the smallest bacterium to the ecosystems of the Serengeti. This meeting aims to bring together a diverse collection of researchers interested in finding ways to parlay this ever-increasing factual knowledge into a corresponding array of conceptual knowledge. The goal of this symposium is to assemble an interdisciplinary community and to provide a platform to discuss perspectives on the role of theory in biology, and importantly also vice versa, the impact that biology can have on theory.

Zusammenfassung:
A vast number of biologically important enzymes, transporters, and other molecules require the participation or transport of protons. Because the proton is unique in many respects, its properties and reactions are often quite distinct from those of other ions. Our goal is to include a truly international spectrum of speakers and attendees. The invited speakers include chemists, structural biologists, and physiologists whose expertise encompasses a wide range of topics that are all related to the proton. We hope to encourage new understandings on levels from basic science to biomedical applications.

EMBO Lecture Course — Venice Summer School: The future of evolutionary-developmental systems biology
21. Aug 2023 - 25. Aug 2023 • Venedig, Italien
Veranstalter:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Zusammenfassung:
Any adequate theory of evolutionary change must cover both the sources and the consequences of phenotypic variation. On the one hand, we must understand the various processes—genetic, metabolic, physiological, developmental, and behavioral—that generate variation. On the other hand, we must understand the sorting processes that lead to the differential survival of different variants. The latter aspect is covered by traditional evolutionary genetics, with its well-developed set of concepts and models. In contrast, there seems to be no overarching theory or unifying framework able to explain the enormous diversity of processes generating variation. These processes are not only dauntingly complex, but also occur at many different levels of organization—from the molecular to the cellular, tissue, organ, organismic, and even supra-organismic levels (ecological or social). We could conclude from this that no theory of the sources of variation is possible, or we could call for a novel, empirically grounded, organismic systems biology that integrates philosophical, mathematical, and experimental approaches to tackle the issue. We will look at this project from a broad theoretical vantage point to assess the future of evolutionary and developmental systems biology.

EMBO Workshop — DNA topology and topoisomerases in genome dynamics
03. Sep 2023 - 07. Sep 2023 • Les Diablerets, Schweiz
Veranstalter:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Zusammenfassung:
Following the elucidation of the structure of DNA, it was clear that the iconic double helical structure of DNA would impact and impede the fundamental genomic transactions required for cellular life. Even after 70 years of research, novel roles for DNA topology and topoisomerase action in transcriptional control, chromosome structure, anti-viral responses and genome stability are still being uncovered. We are also still deciphering how many chemotherapeutics target topoisomerases and DNA topology impacted processes. The EMBO workshops on DNA topology and topoisomerases bring together scientists who have only recently discovered the importance of DNA topology in their specialties with long standing researchers in the field. This generates a vibrant interdisciplinary meeting, which highlights and disseminates work involving diverse and rapidly evolving approaches. This workshop highlights studies using techniques as varied as single molecule physics and structural biology, pan-genomic analysis of chromosome structure and chromatin composition and live cell single particle tracking to uncover new findings on the nature of DNA topological transactions and how they impact cellular processes.

SPLW02 — Active mechanics, from single cells to cell layers, tissues and development
04. Sep 2023 - 08. Sep 2023 • Cambridge , Großbritannien
Veranstalter:
Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences (INI)
Zusammenfassung:
This workshop brings together experimental and theoretical researchers who work on cell mechanics, on three different scales. At the microscopic scale, the cytoskeletal active network shapes the cell and generates active forces. At the mesoscale, the collective motion and mechanics of cells gives rises to tissues such as epithelial cell sheets which have become a premier biophysical model system. In the full biological context of cell and developmental mechanics, such as in model tissue organoids, shapes and function arise through the interplay of this active mechanics with morphogens and signalling. Our workshop will explore these three scales of size and complexity, with a view towards bridging the gaps between communities and developing a true multiscale understanding.

EMBL Conference — Protein synthesis and translational control
06. Sep 2023 - 10. Sep 2023 • EMBL Heidelberg and Virtual, Deutschland
Veranstalter:
European Molecular Biology Laboratory | EMBL
Zusammenfassung:
Mechanisms that shape cellular proteomes are critical for life. This conference focuses on the process of protein synthesis, from the molecular and structural understanding of the translational machinery to its regulation, its implications in cell and organismal biology, and its alteration in disease. The regulation of mRNA translation is critical to maintain cell homeostasis and mediates cellular responses to environmental, physiological, and pathological cues. Given the central importance of protein synthesis, it is unsurprising that dysregulation or defects in mRNA translation are widely linked to disease, including cancer, neurological or metabolic disorders, and viral infection. In recent years, technical advances have challenged hitherto established dogmas, uncovered new quality control mechanisms, expanded the breath of translation regulators, enhanced our understanding of the dynamics of translation in living cells, and revealed unexpected interconnections with other cellular processes such as metabolism. Advances on these aspects of mRNA translation will be featured, as well as new insights into translation regulation in physiology and disease.

EMBO Workshop — The evolution of animal genomes
18. Sep 2023 - 21. Sep 2023 • Sevilla, Spanien
Veranstalter:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Zusammenfassung:
Genome evolution represents the basis of species adaptation to changing environments and habitats. Recent breakthroughs in sequencing technologies resulted in the acquisition of complete genome information for an increasing number of animal species, propelling the field of evolutionary genomics into a new era of discovery. Yet, our limited capacity to interpret genome variation hinders our understanding on how phenotypical changes drive adaptation. This urges the development of novel strategies to reconcile genomic sequence and function, for which a proper integration of cell-specific gene programs, non-coding regulation and 3D chromatin organization becomes essential. Further, establishing causal relationships between genome mutations and phenotypes still remains a major challenge in the field. Within this context, novel synthetic biology approaches are emerging as a means to understand developmental processes in the context of evolution. The aim of this EMBO workshop is to bring together international scientists with distinct, but complementary expertises on interpreting genome variation, on mechanisms of gene regulation and on in vivo synthetic biology approaches. This allows a comprehensive overview that goes from fundamental principles encoded in genomes to their ultimate biological significance on the formation of living, evolving organisms.

EMBO Workshop — Inter-organelle contacts biology
01. Okt 2023 - 06. Okt 2023 • Fiuggi, Italien
Veranstalter:
European Molecular Biology Organization – EMBO
Zusammenfassung:
For decades, studies in cell biology have focused on discovering the functions and dynamics of individual organelles. However, organelles do not exist only as single units, but also as part of entities formed through contacts between two or more distinct organelles. In fact, the recent years of studies on inter-organelle contacts have revealed that complex cellular functions, biochemical processes and signaling pathways are governed at the sites where heterotypic organelles come into contact with each other. This paradigm shift has spurred a new gold rush of research in cell biology that is transforming our understanding of cell physiology, signaling and metabolism in health and disease. This EMBO Workshop on inter-organelle contacts biology, now at its 3rd edition, aims at bringing together the community of scientists in this field to share their work, experience, expertise, and vision.

Veranstalter:
Fusion Conferences
Zusammenfassung:
The germline provides an eternal cellular link between generations and is the source of genetic diversity and evolution of animal populations. In addition, perturbations in the epigenome or genome of a parental germline that arise during development could be underlying causes of many disease states in offspring. In males, sperm are the conduit for transmission of genetic and epigenetic information to the next generation and are formed by the complex process of spermatogenesis, which involves undifferentiated stem cell, differentiating, meiotic, and morphogenesis phases. This workshop will explore recent advances in understanding the biology of these different phases in a variety of animal models as well as how epigenetic and genetic abnormalities may underlie transmission of diseases and fertility disorder in humans. Invited talks and poster sessions that focus on cutting edge findings along with vibrant discussions and debates about controversies in the field will provide a rich intellectual atmosphere that is sure to have an important impact on how the biology of spermatogenesis is investigated for years to come.

Veranstalter:
Fusion Conferences
Zusammenfassung:
The maintenance of genome integrity is critical for the suppression of several pathological disorders in humans, including cancer, infertility and neurodegeneration. Moreover, the accumulation of unrepaired errors in DNA is commonly cited as a likely cause of tissue and organismal ageing. Destabilization of the genome can occur as a result of several cell intrinsic or extrinsic factors, including errors arising during DNA replication or chromosome segregation, as well as exposure of cells to agents that induce DNA damage. In this conference, we aim to bring together scientists studying DNA replication, DNA repair and chromosome segregation with those interested in how chromosomal instability can influence human pathology. Moreover, we aim to show how high throughput and high content screening methods can be used as a discovery tool both for basic science applications and to identify potential therapeutic modalities.

Zusammenfassung:
Over the past decades it became evident that a RNA transcripts specific amount and localisation are important in order to understand the biological function of its (non-) coding gene. Whereby state-of-the-art in situ hybridisation (ISH) technologies are key to visualise these RNAs in a given tissue or cell. This course aims to highlight three powerful RNA visualisation techniques in histological tissue samples. During this course, the participants will learn to validate the cellular localisation of candidate genes from transcriptome studies through conventional ISH and, the more recent cutting-edge, smFISH (Single Molecule Fluorescent ISH) and HCR-ISH (Hybridization Chain Reaction), based RNA ISH hybridisation methods. Additionally, the course will also cover essential tissue embedding protocols that are adapted for use in visually interrogating RNA transcripts in mammalian tissues.

The students are encouraged to sign-up for a self-paced practical tutorial that covers basic and advanced SAXS data processing steps (including quizzes to keep track of successful participation). In addition, students are encouraged to apply to the ‘add on module’ which includes an on-site visit (5 days) in Hamburg to participate either in track 1: X-ray beamline operation or track 2: sample optimisation for SAXS. Students not travelling to Hamburg can sign up for small discussion groups to discuss their SAXS data in more detail.

Zusammenfassung:
Flow Cytometry is one of the most powerful single cell analysis methods used throughout the life sciences and medicine. By utilising Flow Cytometry we can identify and quantify specific cell populations from heterogeneous samples, analyse the cell cycle or proliferation state or simply detect the expression of fluorescent reporters. In line with the suggestions from our course in 2019, we will significantly enhance the number of analysis sessions together with our partners from FlowJo. We will cover the theory of Flow Cytometry and corroborate this information intensively with the practical issues of the most frequent assays as part of our practical course curriculum.

Zusammenfassung:
This inaugural EMBO | EMBL Symposium aims to showcase the future of plant biology. Going beyond the limited number of model plants that plant biologists have historically focused on (e.g. Arabidopsis, corn, rice), it is nowadays possible to use comparative approaches to uncover the mechanistic basis and the evolutionary drive for the enormous phenotypic variation among the 400,000 species of plants on Earth.
