The primary aim of this Workshop is to bring together world-leading theory and experimental researchers studying organismal growth and development through quantitative approaches. A notable feature is in the diversity of subjects-it is not focused on a particular sub-field of development. Rather, it is unified by the approaches taken to study development. It will provide a forum where intellectual connections can be established among the diverse participants studying a broad spectrum of problems and models, lowering the barriers to interdisciplinary research.
Themen:
Broadly, the topics of interest will include self-organisation of multicellular systems, tissue-scale mechanics, the complex dynamics of gene expression during development, and the network perspective of gene regulation.

This meeting will be the fifth iteration of this highly successful Journal Meeting, which has been running every two years since 2014 (including virtually in 2020). Over the past four events, we have brought together a diverse group of researchers (both in terms of topic and demographics) united in their desire to better understand human development, and to do so using human cells and tissues. Since the first meeting in 2014, we have witnessed huge advances in the field, driven largely by technological advances such as organoid culture and single cell sequencing, and have seen significant expansion in the range of questions that can be now addressed using human systems. It is therefore more important than ever to provide a forum for researchers to come together and discuss the latest advances, and remaining challenges, in the field.

EMBO Workshop — RNA 3' end formation and the regulation of eukaryotic genomes

Defining the end of transcription units across eukaryotic genomes is critical to understanding how individual genes are regulated. RNA 3' end processing triggers release of transcripts from their chromatin template, leading to production of messenger RNA as well as triggering degradation of excess transcripts. To fully understand this process it is important to consider how RNA 3' end formation is coordinated with gene transcription and other RNA processing mechanisms. Furthermore the mindshift in considering RNA 3’ ends in the context of the whole genome and its transcriptome requires extensive computational biology/bioinformatics to fully appreciate the genome wide biological roles of this process. This EMBO Workshop will bring together many of the top scientists in this field who employ a combination of molecular biology approaches that also harness recently developed bioinformatics, proteomics and computational based cryoEM. Surprisingly even though aspects of this subject area have been under investigation for decades, only now do we appreciate how critical this process is to gene expression in a genomic context. In particular recent studies show that cellular stress through viral infection or cancer induction both cause a breakdown in RNA 3' end regulation. All of these and more topics will be covered in our forthcoming, intense and in person EMBO workshop on RNA 3’ ends at Brasenose College Oxford this September, 2022.

Sainsbury Laboratory Symposium 2022 — Regulatory Dynamics During Development and Evolution (hybrid conference).

The 4th biennial Sainsbury Laboratory Symposium (#SLS22) will take place at the Sainsbury Laboratory, Cambridge, UK over three days (21-23 September 2022) and will be delivered in a hybrid format. Delegates may choose to attend in-person or online. The Symposium will foster a dialogue between researchers working on regulatory dynamics from different fields across the plant and animal kingdoms and consist of talks, poster sessions and daytime and evening social and networking events. Our goal is to create a welcoming, safe, collaborative, inclusive and respectful symposium environment by promoting diversity of attendance and inclusivity of participation of underrepresented scientists.

In this Workshop, we aim to bring together computational, cell, and evolutionary biologists to help address this major challenge of integrative cell biology. We strongly believe that actively seeking out collaboration across fields will be crucial to push cell biology beyond the boundaries of individual species into a truly comparative discipline anchored to predictive models. In turn, computational biologists will have an opportunity to guide and influence the next phase of big data generation in cell biology. Together, in deciphering the rules that underpin the relationship between the genome and the cell that encases it, we will better understand both evolution and cellular function.

Toxic Metabolites in the Biology of Ageing and Cancer

This Workshop will focus on the biology of toxic metabolites in the ageing process, stem cells and cancer. Specific emphasis will be placed on how metabolites that carry carbonyls (such as aldehydes and ketones) damage stem and cancer cells. A particular area will focus on endogenous aldehydes (such as acteladehyde, formaldehyde and methyl-gyoxal), the enzymes that remove them [aldehyde dehydrogenases (Aldh) and functionally related glutathione-based enzymes such as Adh5 and Glo-1/2]. Further, we will consider how human genetic variation can contribute to metabolite sensitivity, and how mutations in cancer genomes in toxic metabolism pathways can be exploited for therapy.
