NAMED 2020: De/constructing motion events
04 dec 2020 - 05 dec 2020 • Paris, France

American Name Society (ANS)
Résumé:
Although toponyms are often taken for granted in our daily lives, they bear considerable potential for acquiring personal and social meanings depending on their contexts and co-texts of use. These multi-layered meanings are often utilized by authors as a literary resource to evoke associations or invoke evaluative positioning. Papers accepted for this panel will explore how the meaning potential of place-names—be they real or fictional—is effectively harnessed to shape literary settings within specific works or by specific authors. Examples of themes that can be addressed include toponyms choice/invention and their connotations; toponyms in translation; toponyms in literary theory; and toponyms and intertextuality.

The role of linguistic interfaces — XXIII. Deutscher Hispanistentag
24 fév 2021 - 27 fév 2021 • Graz, Autriche
Organisateur:
Universität Graz
Résumé:
The assumption of an interaction between grammatical subsystems depends very much on the theoretical paradigm: While some synchronic and diachronic grammatical theories, such as Optimality Theory (OT) and grammaticalization theory, early based their fundamental assumptions on the interaction of grammatical modules, the idea of autonomous subsystems predominated in early phases of the Generative paradigm before the interest in language acquisition and change increased (see Fischer & Gabriel 2016: 8). Nowadays, the term itself is ambiguous since it is used in different ways: in a wider interpretation, the term “interface” refers to the connection between linguistics and other disciplines (e.g. philosophy, psychology) as well as to the connection between the language faculty and other aspects of cognitive domains, i.e. the external or non-linguistic interfaces.

European Association for Studies of Australia (EASA) International Conference
29 mar 2021 - 01 avr 2021 • University of Naples, Italie
Organisateur:
European Association for Studies of Australia (EASA)
Résumé:
Australia may be defined as a society increasingly preoccupied yet also gambling with the future, a worry or denial which is closely connected to the notion of risk as a systematic way of dealing with, inducing and introducing hazards and insecurities. Apocalyptic speculations about future events are often employed in regard to feared scapegoats, such as climate change, migrants and Indigenous peoples, who are blamed for threatening or damaging society. Denial and scepticism have become the resort of political and social movements, yet fear and anxiety are perhaps the dominant affective modes of expressing one’s attachment to the Australian community or nation.

ISB13 — International Symposium on Bilingualism
09 jul 2021 - 14 jul 2021 • Warsaw , Pologne
Organisateur:
University of Warsaw, Poland
Résumé:
The conference theme, “Bilingualism in Flux”, presents bilingualism as a dynamic and multifaceted phenomenon existing on a continuum. The in flux part of the theme is a twofold concept. First, it is understood as relating to non-linguistic circumstances that foster not only diverse, but also transient bilingual communities throughout the world. Nowadays, new waves of migration influence the linguistic status quo and enrich existing environments. Second, it pertains to the very processes taking place in language, a dynamic entity prone to changes. The fluctuating circumstances entail linguistic consequences reflected in the development of the second and further languages, cross-linguistic influence, language attrition, incomplete acquisition, and maintenance of heritage languages. Finally, the conference leitmotif highlights not only the local changes presently taking place in Poland, but also the country’s linguistic heritage.

The Once and Future English
10 mar 2022 - 12 mar 2022 • Londres, Royaume-Uni
Organisateur:
University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN, USA
Résumé:
This conference begins with the notion that English is today used by about 1.5 billion people, less than a third of whom speak it as their first language. This minority-majority reversal has significantly impacted the grammatical characteristics of English, the demographics of the Anglophone population, the domains in which English is used, and attitudes towards the language, which has been described both as a venue for increased global communication and as a cultural and economic predator. The history of the language is being rewritten as well, from one defined by conventional periodization and the triumph of English as a Germanic language, to one that has reoriented the historical and contemporary significance of the language’s traditional homelands. The Once and Future English asks the question: How will English’s present and past look to future speakers?
