Interdisciplinary Conference on Communicating Love and Desire
27 mai 2026 - 29 mai 2026 • Aarhus, Danemark
Résumé:
While love and desire are often treated as personal and private matters, they are also sites of conflict, negotiation, and power. Historically, controlling expressions of desire has been used to enforce social hierarchies, gender norms, and colonial power. Even today, conflicts over consent, domestic violence, LGBTQ+ rights, and cross-cultural misunderstandings reveal the urgent need to better understand how love and desire are communicated. Addressing these questions is not only of academic interest but also has practical relevance for public health, education, migration policy, and social cohesion. This three-day conference aims to bridge disciplinary divides to illuminate how better communication about love and desire can help address these real-world challenges.

Résumé:
The International Conference on Middle English (ICOME) started in the mid-1990s as a bi- /triennial conference and has been organised by leading universities in the field of the history of English across Europe (Poznań, Helsinki, Dublin, Vienna, Naples, Cambridge, Murcia, Stavanger, Florence, Glasgow, Málaga, etc.). Traditionally, ICOME gathers researchers working on both Middle English language and literature, including perspectives on variation and change, textual and manuscript studies, literary and cultural approaches, language contact, pragmatics and narratology. The 14th edition of ICOME will be held on 3–6 June 2026 on the idyllic Au peninsula, located on the southwestern shore of Lake Zurich (Schloss Au) in Switzerland. The theme of the conference will be “Travel and Travelling”. We encourage papers dealing with any aspect of the theme, e.g. Middle English lexis of travel, medieval English travellers and travel writing, important journeys and pilgrim routes, travelling texts and manuscripts, etc. Papers unconnected to the conference’s theme are also welcome. Moreover, we will host a round table dedicated to teaching Middle English and organise an excursion to Einsiedeln, where participants will visit the Abbey and walk a stretch of the Way of St. James, following in the footsteps of medieval pilgrims.

ICCA2026 — International Conference on Conversation Analysis 2026
23 jui 2026 - 29 jui 2026 • Edmonton, Canada
Résumé:
Diverse cultures, languages, worldviews, and human experiences characterize the world that we live in. Diversities reflect the multitude of domains related to us and our lives, such as language, culture, gender, ethnicity, and age. Diversity is a lens through which we gain insights into the various perspectives and experiences that shape us and our world. By acknowledging and studying diversities in interaction, we open our research and ourselves to a wealth of knowledge that broadens our understanding of ourselves and the world around us and creates positive social change. Thus, diversity is a force fueling innovation and progress. The theme of ICCA2026—Diversities, Language, Interaction—highlights the multiplicity of diversities and brings a diversity lens to our research on language and interaction.

Workshop at ALT-2026: Diversity in Systemic Expansion and Contraction
01 jul 2026 - 03 jul 2026 • Lyon, France
Résumé:
Grammatical systems, such as case, gender, and TAM, can differ dramatically even among closely related languages, sometimes expanding to cross-linguistically unusual proportions or contracting to just a few core distinctions. This workshop explores the underlying parameters that drive large-scale systemic expansion and contraction. While much research has focused on the grammaticalization of individual constructions, less is known about how new and existing categories interact in the most expansive systems, or what motivates their growth or reduction. The workshop aims to explore how expansive systems inform our understanding of linguistic organization and change.

Sommergarten 2026: Inaugural International Symposium
10 jul 2026 - 11 jul 2026 • Cincinnati, Ohio, États-Unis
Résumé:
Sommergarten 2026 will provide a new collective where students, teachers, scholars, and other interested community members can share and discuss research on the intersections between language learning, culture, and pedagogy. Although research shows that the importance of learning about our societies and cultures is widely recognized, a number of studies reveal that many language educators find culture distinctly difficult to teach, and/or in some cases feel they possess inadequate cultural knowledge or awareness themselves. This has implications for students who are in need of cultural learning opportunities, yet lack access to them or participate in educational activities that are poorly designed and implemented. Sommergarten’s inaugural symposium will serve as a shared space where those involved and interested in language education can discover efforts across the globe to increase cultural learning, as well as consider various scholarly perspectives on improving and sustaining our abilities to teach it.

Seminar at the 2026 ESSE Conference: Translation and AI: Training and Practice
31 aou 2026 - 04 sep 2026 • Santiago de Compostela, Espagne
Organisateur:
European Society for the Study of English
Résumé:
The rapid development of AI and its integration into translator training and translation practices have led to numerous changes in both academia (Bada & Schumacher, 2024; Loock, 2025) and the translation industry (Girletti & Lefer, 2024), hence a need for trainees and professionals to adapt to an ever-changing field. The necessity of mastering new AI skills, namely prompt engineering (He, 2024: 316), leads both lecturers and professionals to reinvent themselves more than ever. Although the recent AI developments have led to the use of MT for many text types that were considered, until recently, to be AI-resistant, human intervention is still needed to maintain professional quality standards, particularly for literary translation (Hansen & Esperança-Rodier, 2022: 185), creative domains (dubbing, subtitling, localisation) (e.g. Jiménez-Crespo, 2024: 18) and specialised translation (terminology management, polysemy) (Kübler et al., 2024).

Seminar at the 2026 ESSE Conference: From Crisis to Change: Language and Discourse in the Face of the Ecological Emergency
31 aou 2026 - 04 sep 2026 • Santiago de Compostela, Espagne
Résumé:
This seminar will explore how ecological challenges and social threats—including those arising from military conflicts and the ecological and social destruction caused by war—are represented and negotiated in a wide range of ecological texts and discourses. We will investigate how such texts, whether literary or non-literary, verbal or multimodal, contemporary or historical, reflect concerns related to environmental degradation, climate change, and socio-political instability. Equally, the seminar will focus on how these texts and discourses not only depict crises but also engage in forms of resistance, propose practical solutions, and promote positive environmental and social change. Participants will examine how language shapes our understanding of ecological issues and how discourse can serve as a catalyst for action.

Workshop at the 2026 ESSE Conference: Metadiscourse in and on Social Media
31 aou 2026 - 04 sep 2026 • Santiago de Compostela, Espagne
Résumé:
Internet memes and other forms of social media discourse have attracted scholarly interest across a range of disciplines for their role in establishing and maintaining social relationships and in shaping public opinion (e.g. Shifman 2014, Milner 2016, Wiggins 2019). Linguistic approaches, studying how language and image combine in ways that resemble linguistic constructions, have also gained prominence (e.g. Dancygier & Vandelanotte 2017, 2025b; Lou 2017; Zenner & Geeraerts 2018), as have studies of the humorous and emotional aspects involved (e.g. Piata 2020; Zappavigna & Logi 2024; Dancygier & Vandelanotte 2025a). In this seminar, we want to address the use of English, often alongside images and emoji, in examples of various types of metadiscourse ‘in’ social media – self-reflexive forms of the discourse itself – but also ‘on’ or ‘about’ social media – i.e. discussions that emerge in society on social media usage.

LavLang32 — Lavender Languages and Linguistics 32
02 sep 2026 - 04 jui 2026 • University of Edinburgh, Royaume-Uni
Résumé:
Belonging is a complex and contested issue within the queer community. Those who identify as queer often experience a complicated sense of (dis)belonging—not only when navigating heteronormative social structures that privilege heterosexuality and cisgender identities, but also within queer communities and spaces themselves. By emphasizing queer (dis)belonging, we wish to interrogate the politics of inclusion and exclusion both within and beyond queer spaces, inviting research that critically examines how queer people negotiate their identities within: i) social structures such as political systems, class hierarchies, nation states, kinship networks, and religious institutions; and ii) technologies such as AI, social media, and digital communication.

10th International Conference on Romance-German and Intra-Romance Contrastive Linguistics
02 sep 2026 - 05 sep 2026 • Innsbruck, Autriche
Résumé:
In 2008, the Departments of Romance Studies and of Translation and Interpreting at the University of Innsbruck assumed responsibility for this series of conferences, originally founded in 1987 by Professor Gerd Wotjak in Leipzig. It is one of the few international events dedicated entirely to contrastive linguistics. As in previous editions, papers may address both theoretical and applied aspects of contrastive linguistics between Romance languages and German, as well as between different Romance languages. Contributions focusing on contrasts between Romance languages and other languages are also welcome.

SIDG XI — XIth Congress of the International Society for Dialectology and Geolinguistics
07 sep 2026 - 11 sep 2026 • Marburg, Allemagne
Organisateur:
International Society for Dialectology and Geolinguistics (SIDG)
Résumé:
Geolinguistics and dialectology are at a pivotal juncture in the 21st century, facing transformative challenges and opportunities that are reshaping the disciplines. Historically characterized by their adaptability to societal shifts and methodological advancements, these fields have continually evolved in response to the dynamic interplay of theoretical and empirical science. The recent surge in international collaboration has further broadened research horizons, fostering cross-border perspectives and enriching the scope of inquiry. Traditionally focused on the regional variation of individual languages, dialectology is now increasingly oriented towards typological studies and interlinguistic relationships. In an era defined by global change, the field has transcended its national boundaries to emerge as a truly international domain of study. Our conference theme, Geolinguistics across Borders, reflects this paradigm shift.

MMSYM 2026 – Embodied communication in (inter)action — 3rd International Symposium on Multimodal Communication
09 sep 2026 - 11 sep 2026 • Leuven, Belgique
Résumé:
The third edition of MMSYM continues the symposium series on multimodal communication previously held in Frankfurt am Main (2024) and Barcelona (2023). The symposium aims at gaining insights into the interaction and/or co-dependence of semiotic resources in spoken and signed language. To advance our understanding of communication, the symposium aims at further integrating multimodality as an integral part of linguistics and cognitive science. This overarching goal of the symposium is rooted in the conviction that investigating multimodality is key to understanding how language and communication work. For MMSYM 2026, we welcome contributions approaching multimodal communication from different methodological and disciplinary angles. The main topic of this edition of the symposium is “Embodied communication in (inter)action”.

SyNCC — The Syntax of Nominal Copular Clauses: Cross-linguistic description and formal theories
23 sep 2026 - 24 sep 2026 • Bielefeld University, Allemagne
Résumé:
The Syntax of Nominal Copular Clauses Conference (SyNCC) will be held 23-24 September 2026 at Bielefeld University, Germany. SyNCC is part of the AHRC/DFG-funded SynCop project (http://syncop.info). It will focus on the syntax and semantics of sentences with a nominal predicate, aiming for a discussion with both breadth and depth. The immediate goal of the conference is to bring together both theoretical insights from in-depth analysis and a broadening of the empirical landscape to include work on un(der)-studied languages. The longer-term goal is to further advance our understanding of the principles underpinning the syntactic and semantic characteristics of non-verbal predication.

GeoRom — I Congreso Internacional de Geolingüística Románica
14 oct 2026 - 16 oct 2026 • Salamanca, Espagne

15 oct 2026 - 17 oct 2026 • Paris, France
Organisateur:
AGES

The aim of this scientific event is to bring together junior and experienced researchers to discuss current research issues in a major field of linguistics, and one which is at the core of communication and human relations: the lexicons. The theme of this conference is designed to include the widest possible range of research approaches in the different (sub)disciplines of linguistics, involving theoretical and empirical insights as well as methodological discussions in the field. For each of the conference’s subsections, we welcome a dialogue between diachronic and synchronic approaches, corpus and field studies, as well as analyses in monolingual and multilingual contexts. The proposed presentation should focus primarily, but not exclusively, on morphology, syntax, semantics and discourse analysis.
