The Mathematics of Elections, Fairness, and Representation
29 mar 2026 - 03 avr 2026 • Banff, Alberta, Canada
Organisateur:
Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS)
Résumé:
This workshop explores problems in mathematical political science, focusing on recent developments in the study of alternative voting methods and the creation of district electoral maps. Over the last 20 years, many jurisdictions in Canada and the United States have adopted or have considered adopting alternative voting methods such as ranked-choice voting for electing mayors, representatives, city council members, etc. There are many questions about such methods which can be analyzed mathematically. For example, does ranked-choice voting tend to elect candidates who are more centrist than candidates elected by more commonly-used methods like plurality? How can we best achieve proportional representation on a legislative body? What makes an election fair? There are many open problems around such questions, and this workshop hopes to make some progress on them using mathematical tools.

Résumé:
Twenty-First International Conference on the Arts in Society, Department of Theatre Studies, School of Philosophy, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece,, 10-12 June 2026. Founded in 2000, the Arts in Society Research Network offers an interdisciplinary forum for discussion of the role of the arts in society. It is a place for critical engagement, examination, and experimentation, developing ideas that connect the arts to their contexts in the world – on stage, in studios and theaters, in classrooms, in museums and galleries, on the streets and in communities. We seek to build an epistemic community where we can make linkages across disciplinary, geographic, and cultural boundaries.

MHBW01 — The Mathematics of Behaviour: an interdisciplinary school
20 jul 2026 - 24 jul 2026 • Cambridge, Royaume-Uni
Organisateur:
Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Cambridge
Résumé:
Interdisciplinary research requires researchers to first develop a common language for discipline specific terminology. This school will gather experts from various disciplines within behavioural and mathematical sciences, to establish common ground in terminology, map the similarities and differences in challenge perspectives across disciplines, and discuss inclusive environments in interdisciplinary settings. The confluence of modelling and behavioural expertise will be harnessed to promote structured discussions of the adequacy and required innovation to capture key behaviours in modelling approaches. The school will feature contributions from across the mathematical sciences, with expertise in incorporating behaviour into the spectrum of modelling approaches (agent-based models, meso-level, macro-level and AI modelling) across epidemiology, energy use and other application areas, to present conventional and emerging methodologies for incorporating human behaviour.
