Workshop WHTW02 — WHT Follow on: the applications, generalisation and implementation of the Wiener-Hopf Method
01. Jul 2024 - 05. Jul 2024 • Cambridge , Großbritannien
Veranstalter:
Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences
Zusammenfassung:
Wiener–Hopf method has been conceived around 90 years ago and since then has shaped many areas of modern analysis. Recently, the method has received a new boost following the progress in matrix factorisation theory that was intensively discussed on the INI Programme "Bringing pure and applied analysis together via the Wiener-Hopf technique, its generalisations and applications" (link https://www.newton.ac.uk/event/wht/) in 2019. During the programme, new ideas and concepts have been identified and a direction of the further method development and its impactful applications have been determined and the Wiener–Hopf type methods enables researchers to solve numerous physical, natural technological and financial problems motivated by real world applications. This follow up Workshop will consider a progress made for last five years in both the theory and applications. In theoretical development, there has been significant progress towards numerical and approximate solutions to various classes of Wiener–Hopf and Riemann–Hilbert problems.

Hausdorff School — “Uniformity and Stability of Oscillatory Integrals”
08. Jul 2024 - 12. Jul 2024 • Bonn, Deutschland
Veranstalter:
Hausdorff Research Institute for Mathematics (HIM)
Zusammenfassung:
Because of the ubiquity of Fourier analysis, oscillatory integrals are present in many techniques in both harmonic analysis and analytic number theory. Current state-of-the-art methods in both fields are pushing beyond classical methods because of increased importance of understanding the uniformity and stability of the estimates. In addition, researchers are uncovering unifying ideas that span the (traditionally somewhat separated areas) of oscillatory integrals in the setting of analysis, and character sums in number theory. Recent work on estimating oscillatory integrals have even applied model theory, from logic. This summer school will give participants an introduction on the classical methods for estimating oscillatory integrals and explain current cutting-edge developments. Throughout, the lectures will view these problems through a lens of understanding the uniformity and stability of the estimates.

Bridging PDE and Geometric Flows - An LMS-HIMR Research School
22. Jul 2024 - 26. Jul 2024 • Cardiff, Großbritannien
Veranstalter:
London Mathematical Society at Cardiff University
Zusammenfassung:
Information on the application process at the conference page, deadline 07.04.2024.

The field of geometric flows is a highly active research area located in the intersection of partial differential equations (PDE), differential geometry and convex geometry. The most prominent prototype equations are the mean curvature flow and the Ricci flow, the latter being the main key to the so far only solution of a Millennium problem listed by the Clay institute, the so-called Poincaré conjecture, which was solved by Perelman building upon ideas of Hamilton.

These geometric equations are fully nonlinear systems and the PDE theory required to rigorously understand their details is in the most cases much deeper than what is taught in undergraduate PDE courses. They comprise results from regularity theory for fully nonlinear (elliptic and parabolic) PDE, advanced results from functional analysis and operators on manifolds.

Contrary to what is usually covered in research schools on geometric flows, this school is supposed to focus on the PDE aspects of geometric flows, which is often considered as technical and therefore neglected. Our PDE expert lecturer Dr. Ben Lambert aims to make this material as accessible as possible and the theory will be accompanied by their application to the curvature flow equations, delivered by Prof. Alessandra Pluda. Additional guest lectures with further applications to geometry will be held by Prof. Mohammad N. Ivaki.

This research school is well-suited for research students roughly at PhD level and for early career researchers working in one or both of the fields of PDE and Differential Geometry. In particular, anyone working with PDE is encouraged to apply, even if their work is not related to geometric flows.

Veranstalter:
American Institute of Mathematics, Pasadena, California
Zusammenfassung:
This workshop, sponsored by AIM and the NSF, will be devoted to exploring the geometric and analytic regularity of fully nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE) arising from geometry and physics. Ever since Yau's solution to the Calabi conjecture, geometric PDEs, such as the complex Monge-Ampère equations, have been extensively studied from both the geometric and analytic perspective. These equations have profound applications across many areas of mathematics, including differential geometry, metric geometry and algebraic geometry. Notable advancements have been made in this field, including the sharp L∞ estimates of Kolodziej, and Hölder continuity for complex Monge-Ampère equations. The goal is to bring together experts in this field to explore open problems and develop new techniques which are expected to yield solutions to some of the long-standing questions.
Themen:
The main topics of the workshop include: Exploration of the geometry of Kähler metrics in the absence of Ricci curvature lower bound, using analytic estimates on Kähler potentials. Analyzing the connection between stability, subsolutions, and the existence of solutions for a specific class of fully nonlinear PDEs. Hölder continuity of solutions for fully nonlinear PDEs, particularly those of the Hessian type. Geometric and analytic estimates for singular metrics on complex varieties.

School — PAC (probably approximately correct) learning and Boolean Harmonic Analysis
16. Sep 2024 - 20. Sep 2024 • Bonn, Deutschland
Veranstalter:
The Hausdorff Research Institute for Mathematics (HIM)
Zusammenfassung:
The interaction between learning theory and harmonic analysis was emphasized by mathematics of quantum computing. One of the outstanding open problems in this area concerns the sharp estimates in Bohnenblust-Hille inequality that generalizes a celebrated Littlewood’s lemma. How to learn (with small error and with large probability) a complicated function or a very large matrix in a relatively small number of random (quantum) queries? Of course, there should be some Fourier type restrictions on a function (a matrix) to have a reasonable answer to this. The “classical” way of learning (Boolean) functions comes from very sophisticated extensions of theorems of Kahn—Kalai—Linial type. In those results the interplay between maximal influence and heavy Fourier tails is the main technique. Maximal influence should be large if the `tail’ is small. However, recently another approach that is hinged on Bohnenblust—Hille inequality appeared. The school will cover the classical maximal influence approach to `probably approximately correct' (PAC) learning as well as the recent achievements using Bohnenblust—Hille inequality and its quantum counterpart.

Structured Mesh Methods for Moving Interface and Free Boundary Problems and Applications
20. Okt 2024 - 25. Okt 2024 • Hangzhou, China
Veranstalter:
Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (IASM)
Zusammenfassung:
Free boundaries and moving interfaces are ubiquitous in our daily activities such as pouring red wine into a glass, jumping into a swimming pool, or watching water waves at the beach. Other processes involving interfaces are much less visible, but have great impacts on our lives. For example, one mechanism by which cancel cells move around is to change the shape of their boundaries. As another example, three major components in our blood are the red cells, the white cells, and platelets; injure of blood vessels will trigger complicated chemical reactions and physical processes that occur on the interface of these cells. It is therefore extremely important to solve key problems in this scientific field so that we can save money, energy, time, and even human lives. One major tool for sciences in this field is through mathematical modeling and numerical computations. This workshop aims to bring together experts from various disciplines to work together on the analysis, modeling, computation, and applications of a wide range of free-boundary and moving-interface problems.

Harmonic analysis on the hypercube has long found exciting applications in theoretical computer science, in areas as diverse as learning theory, voting theory, and computational complexity theory. And TCS has also inspired challenging new questions in analysis, often leading to new perspectives on familiar topics. Indeed, this connection is only deepening as quantum computing, machine learning, and other areas of TCS expand to spaces beyond the hypercube. Talks in this workshop will focus on such connections recently uncovered, techniques in use today, and conjectures old and new. We hope it can also be an invitation to the topic for a harmonic analysis audience, thanks to additional introductory talks scheduled.
