Veranstalter:
Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach (MFO, Oberwolfach Research Institute for Mathematics) and Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences
Zusammenfassung:
Many physical, chemical, biomedical, and techni- cal processes can be described by means of partial differential equations or dynamical systems. In recent years, multi-physics and multi-scale prob- lems have become a particular focus of applied mathematical research. A numerical treatment of such problems is usually very time consuming and thus requires the development of efficient discret- ization schemes that are often realized on large parallel computing environments. In addition, these problems often need to be solved repeatedly for many varying parameters, introducing a curse of dimensionality when the solution is also viewed as a function of these parameters. Examples for such situations include design, control, optimiza- tion, inverse problems, uncertainty analysis and statistical sampling.

The seminar takes place at the Mathematical Re- search and Conference Center of the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Będlewo.

Banach Center – Oberwolfach Graduate Seminar — Optimal Transport Theory and Hydrodynamics (from Euler to Monge and vice versa).
12. Nov 2023 - 18. Nov 2023 • Będlewo, Polen
Veranstalter:
Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach (MFO, Oberwolfach Research Institute for Mathematics) and Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences
Zusammenfassung:
Optimal transport theory is a very successful field of mathematics connecting calculus of variations, probability theory, differential geometry, partial differential equations, functional analysis, statis- tics and computer sciences. Going back to Monge around 1780, this theory has deep connections with the earlier work of Euler on Hydrodynamics around 1750. This connection has recently known a strong revival on many different sides, leading to various non trivial generalizations of the con- cept of optimal transport.

The seminar takes place at the Mathematical Re- search and Conference Center of the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Będlewo.

BIRS Workshop — Harmonic Analysis and Convexity
19. Nov 2023 - 24. Nov 2023 • Banff, Alberta, Kanada
Veranstalter:
Banff International Research Station (BIRS) for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery
Zusammenfassung:
Many important questions in convex geometry are related to the study of sections and projections of convex bodies. For example, can convex bodies be uniquely determined by the size of their sections or projections? What are the largest and smallest sections of the cube? Do convex bodies with smaller sections have smaller volume? A common feature of all these problems is that they are solved with the help of harmonic analysis. The aim of the proposed workshop is to bring together leading experts and young researchers to discuss recent progress in applications of harmonic analysis to convex geometry.

Contemporary Challenges in Trefftz Methods, from Theory to Applications
12. Mai 2024 - 17. Mai 2024 • Oaxaca, Mexiko
Veranstalter:
Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO)
Zusammenfassung:
Trefftz methods are a class of methods for the numerical simulation of problems modeled by differential equations. As opposed to other methods such as finite elements, relying on a unique representation of solutions for all possible equations, Trefftz methods rely on a representation of the solution that is tailored for each particular problem, that is for each differential equation. Thanks to this tailored representation, the methods enjoy desirable properties: they can approximate solutions within a given accuracy using less computational resources than for instance finite element methods. In the past few years, the mathematical community has reached significant breakthroughs to address several challenges attached to the practical performance of Trefftz methods. By gathering experts on these methods, as well as scientists from both academia and industry who use them towards various applications, we have a unique opportunity to exchange about recent developments, stimulate new interactions and shape the future developments on Trefftz methods.

19. Mai 2024 - 24. Mai 2024 • UBC Okanagan campus in Kelowna, B.C., Kanada
Veranstalter:
Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS)
Zusammenfassung:
Amazingly, splines are not just of practical interest in applications, but also are interesting from a purely theoretical mathematical perspective. This workshop brings together researchers from different mathematical communities: on the applied side, those working in numerical analysis and approximation theory, and on the theoretical side, those working in GKM theory, equivariant cohomology and homological algebra. The aim is to bring theory and practice together, and to build collaborations between researchers from different areas. The advancement of knowledge often arises from integration of seemingly different fields.

Hausdorff School — “Uniformity and Stability of Oscillatory Integrals”
08. Jul 2024 - 12. Jul 2024 • Bonn, Deutschland
Veranstalter:
Hausdorff Research Institute for Mathematics (HIM)
Zusammenfassung:
Because of the ubiquity of Fourier analysis, oscillatory integrals are present in many techniques in both harmonic analysis and analytic number theory. Current state-of-the-art methods in both fields are pushing beyond classical methods because of increased importance of understanding the uniformity and stability of the estimates. In addition, researchers are uncovering unifying ideas that span the (traditionally somewhat separated areas) of oscillatory integrals in the setting of analysis, and character sums in number theory. Recent work on estimating oscillatory integrals have even applied model theory, from logic. This summer school will give participants an introduction on the classical methods for estimating oscillatory integrals and explain current cutting-edge developments. Throughout, the lectures will view these problems through a lens of understanding the uniformity and stability of the estimates.

Partial Differential Equations: Deterministic and Probabilistic
18. Aug 2024 - 23. Aug 2024 • Hangzhou, China
Veranstalter:
Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (IASM)
Zusammenfassung:
There have been vast breakthroughs in the area of PDEs with singular randomness in the past a few years, notably parabolic PDEs with singular random noise, and (deterministic) dispersive PDEs with singular random initial data. A common feature of these two types of problems is that the randomness present is too singular for nonlinear operations in the equation to be well-defined classically, but on the other hand magical cancellations from these randomness also allow treatment of these equations with the help of probabilistic methods. Recent research in these two areas also brings potential interaction with the field of inverse problems from PDEs. This workshop will provide opportunity for senior and young researchers from the above areas to meet, discuss, and inspire each other. We aim to foster collaborations between different communities and inspire new research ideas.

Veranstalter:
Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO)
Zusammenfassung:
Our society faces various grand challenges that it urgently needs to address over the coming years, such as mitigating climate change, combating environmental damage, and providing effective, affordable healthcare for everyone. Data science and Artificial Intelligence are expected to play a key role in successfully tackling many of these challenges. While recent progress in AI was driven mostly by empirical developments, we are entering now a new phase in which questions of trustworthiness, scalability, fairness, privacy, reproducibility, and explainability emerge as key factors. Fundamentally new ideas and approaches are needed to address these open problems, which will require a close collaboration between mathematicians, statisticians, computer scientists, and engineers. This workshop features an interdisciplinary group of exceptional scientists from across the world to present recent developments, foster new interactions, and create novel ideas for the solution of the aforementioned data science problems.
