Thanks to the exceptional perspectives of Electron Microscopy an increasing number of molecular events are being positioned and understood within their detailed cellular context. Additionally, the possibility to investigate the molecular aspects of living matter at high resolution has recently come into reach thanks to Cryo-electron Microscopy This Advanced Course addresses early stage researchers and young scientists, exposing them the most advanced ultrastructural methods and techniques applied to the different branches of life sciences. The Course final aim is to advance the participants’ understanding on the potentials of Electron Microscopy as a new essential tool for their research.

The concept of “characters” lies at the heart of many central issues in evolutionary biology. Characters distinguish taxa, cause fitness differences, and generally are the fundamental units of comparison for studies of phenotypic evolution. Historically, the concept of characters originated in morphology and comparative anatomy, where it was intimately connected to the issue of homology. The summer school is mainly aimed at early-stage (PhD or postdoc) empirical and theoretical researchers with a general background and/or interest in developmental and/or evolutionary biology. More senior investigators are welcome to apply as well. Exceptions can be made for motivated masters students. Participants of previous Venice Summer Schools in Evo-Devo are expressly encouraged to reapply as this course has an entirely different topic than previous editions. The course will equip participants with the conceptual tools to engage in a productive discussion of the notion of “characters,” and to relate this notion to their own research questions and explanations.

This EMBO Workshop on inter-organelle contacts biology, now at its 3rd edition, aims at bringing together the community of scientists in this field to share their work, experience, expertise, and vision. It also aims to promote collaborations, to update the nomenclature, and to foster initiatives that, ultimately, will help scientists in biomedical research to capitalize on the opportunities offered by this new field of cell biology. To that end, this year’s edition features an extended program and a large number of long- and short-talks to be selected from submitted abstracts.

This EMBO Workshop will include new discoveries that surround the ER's historical and important role in regulating the translation, translocation and folding of membrane and secreted proteins of the secretory pathway. It will further include new insights into the signaling pathways that allow the ER to correct for cell stress, the unfolded protein response, and maintaining lipid homeostasis. Recent years have also revealed emerging and unexpected new functions for this old organelle in regulating the biogenesis of other organelles at membrane contact sites (MCSs). These MCSs have generated much excitement in cell biology because they are hybrid locations where the elaborate ER network can communicate with other organelles through calcium signaling, lipid metabolism, and the recruitment of machineries that modify membrane shape, trafficking and division. They reveal that not every membrane bound component traffics through vesicles, rather many move directly at positions where the ER is tethered and apposed to the plasma membrane and other organelles to rapidly communicate signals across the cell that can maintain homeostasis. Disruption of ER homeostasis and ER structure is a hallmark of various diseases. Thus, understanding basic mechanisms controlling ER functions may provide insight into a broad range of pathologies.
