Multisystemic Pathophysiological Mechanisms

Multidrug efflux systems export a wide a variety of substrates from cells and consequently are capable of conferring resistance to a wide range of chemotherapeutic agents. Multidrug resistance caused by active drug efflux is one of the major clinical impediments in anti-cancer chemotherapy and treatment of infectious diseases. Multidrug exporters are ubiquitously expressed in prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms where they regulate absorption, distribution and excretion of xenobiotics, and protect sanctuary tissues by regulating the drug permeability of the blood-brain, -placenta and -testis barriers. In addition to regulating pharmacokinetics, transporters are also major players in dictating tissue-responses to drugs, from pharmacological efficacy to toxicity.

This 3-day workshop at the Green Bank Observatory will focus on topics related to the role of oxygen in the universe, planets and life, and how the rise of oxygen on Earth may (or may not) likely have analogs on other planets. Attendance is limited to 50 participants, by application only, and all registration and travel expenses will be covered. The conference scope should be construed broadly; researchers working on any related problems are strongly encouraged to apply. Recognizing the challenges the pandemic has presented for networking over the past several years, this workshop will have a strong focus on early career researchers, and will have broad international participation. Presenters are encouraged to gear their talks to an interdisciplinary audience, eschewing the trees of internecine disciplinary debates for the forest of broader understanding.

Launched in 2007, this cross-disciplinary FASEB Science Research Conference (SRC) is focused on endoplasmic reticulum (ER) function and dynamics, and the contribution of ER dysfunction to disease.  The conference brings together cell biologists and disease-oriented researchers, including both trainees and independent investigators. It attracts basic researchers interested in protein folding, protein secretion, cellular stress responses, protein post-translational modification, proteasome dependent protein degradation, and regulation of lipid biosynthesis, as well as researchers focusing on a range of pathologies, including diabetes, neurodegeneration, cancer, and diseases of protein misfolding.

The first GRC on the topic of biomaterials was held in 1966. Over the past five decades, the field has grown substantially, both in numbers and in scope, leading to a vibrant, multidisciplinary community of researchers who share interests in developing materials for a wide range of medical applications. Building on this rich history, the 2023 GRC and GRS on Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering will focus on the design, function, and translation of bio-instructive materials, with a particular emphasis on material modulation of biological activity.

Transforming Biology into a Technology to Solve Global Challenges

During animal and plant development, cells self-organize into complex organisms, through the gradual refinement of cellular identities and their arrangement in space. This is an iterative process, which progresses through successive rounds of symmetry breaking, accompanied by changes in molecular and mechanical properties that feed back across multiple scales. Many of the elementary processes underlying developmental patterning and morphogenesis are now well documented, and a growing array of tools is available to observe and manipulate their dynamics. Yet, we lack a set of general principles that explain how they are coordinated in space and time to produce a defined outcome, and comprehensive synthetic approaches that use such principles to recapitulate development in vitro. This program will bring together experimentalists and theoreticians to work towards an integrated view of self-organization. This requires that we examine how the collective dynamics of development emerge from individual cellular behaviors - how cellular decisions in high-dimensional gene expression landscapes are coordinated in patterning, and how cellular force generation and mechanical feedbacks provide a substrate for tissue-scale communication and morphogenesis. Unifying these different processes, the notion of information may provide a common currency for the molecular and mechanical cues that guide development, encouraging us to consider that information is not only conveyed and interpreted but also self-organizes.
