Strange Metals in Quantum Materials and Quantum Emulators
11. Dez 2023 - 15. Dez 2023 • Bad Honnef, Deutschland
Veranstalter:
Wilhelm-and-Else Heraeus Foundation
Zusammenfassung:
Strange metals are one of the most prominent frontiers of condensed matter physics. While conventional metals are well described by Landau’s Fermi liquid theory – i.e. a quantum liquid of long-lived, local, electron-like quasiparticles – strange metals defy this paradigm. Here, the local low-energy excitations are extremely short lived and the adiabatic connection to free electrons breaks down. As a consequence, strange metals display a multitude of unusual experimental phenomena, including anomalous charge transport (for example linear in temperature and magnetic field scaling of resistance), singular thermodynamics, and characteristic dynamical scaling. Experimentally, strange metallic behavior has been reported in a variety of experimental systems including high-temperature superconductors and heavy fermion materials. Recent progress in experimental control and device fabrication not only allowed for much more accurate studies of these classic materials, but, in the process, also revealed strikingly new properties such as the unexpectedly simple and yet puzzle scaling of the magnetoresistance. Present-day technology adds novel quantum emulators such as twisted van-der-Waals heterostructures and cold atomic gases to the list of experimental systems displaying strange metallic behavior. At the same time, most recent theories explaining strange metallic behavior resort – from a healthy variation of perspectives – to such diverse concepts as exotic (beyond-Landau) critical quantum fluctuations, effective dual gravity models, and quantum hydrodynamics. As such, this WE-Heraeus Seminar aims at bringing together key figures in the research on strange metals. A particularly important mission is the fruitful cross-talks between experimentalists working on a variety of platforms, as well as theorists with different perspectives of the problem.

Conference on New Frontiers in Scaling Quantum: from Materials and Hardware to Architectures and Components
15. Jan 2024 - 19. Jan 2024 • ICTP, Trieste – hybrid, Italien
Veranstalter:
Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy
Zusammenfassung:
The central challenge in building a scalable quantum computer is achieving effective quantum error correction (QEC). Large arrays of superconducting qubits are currently a leading platform for the implementation of QEC. The success of these implementations relies on the synergy of accurate understanding of the device physics and associated noise, of efficient and practical quantum codes, and of the integration of these two in the form of tileable architectures.

Webinar — Optica Online Industry Meeting: Photonics-based Quantum Computing
16. Jan 2024 • Virtual, Virtuelle Veranstaltung
Veranstalter:
OPTICA
Zusammenfassung:
There are currently several approaches to quantum computing, all of which involve photonics in some way, whether lasers for trapping ions and atoms or integrated photonics for creating and manipulating qubits. Photonics will also be essential for networking quantum computers together to reach scale. Where is each approach today and what does it need from photonics suppliers? All agree that “every photon counts” but what does that mean? This event will hear from developers about their photonics challenges.

Quantum Matter Simulations
19. Feb 2024 - 23. Feb 2024 • Benasque , Spanien
Veranstalter:
Centro de Ciencias de Benasque Pedro Pascual
Zusammenfassung:
In the Quantum Science era where Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices are accessible, quantum information tools to guide their development play a fundamental role. With the foreseen increasing complexity of available NISQ devices, their classical simulations - that drove their development until now – will soon fail to keep up. There is thus an urgent need for increasingly powerful diagnostic tools that can be applied to quantum devices even in the quantum advantage regime

Spring School on Near-Term Quantum Computing
14. Apr 2024 - 17. Apr 2024 • Benasque , Spanien
Veranstalter:
Centro de Ciencias de Benasque Pedro Pascual
Zusammenfassung:
Quantum computing has experience huge scientific growth recently. What 10 years ago were a few prototypes of qubits in closed university laboratories are now fully fledged quantum computing devices, made of tens or even hundreds of qubits and substantially improved quality, and getting closer to fault-tolerance thresholds. Moreover, the existence and development of several quantum computing technology platforms enrich the scientific panorama and provide excellent grounds to discover new physics.

The School is organized to give time and space for the participants to interact with each other and the school lecturers, surrounded by a stimulating environment created by the open architecture and blackboard walls of the CCBPP center and the astonishing nature of Benasque Valley.

Dagstuhl-Seminar — Classical-Quantum Synergies in the Theory and Practice of Quantum Error Correction
20. Mai 2024 - 23. Mai 2024 • Schloss Dagstuhl, Wadern, Deutschland
Veranstalter:
Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik
Zusammenfassung:
The last years have seen significant advances in the field of quantum technologies, consolidating the development of basic requirements for quantum computation. Protecting the quantum computation from noise and decoherence has become more topical than ever, challenging and bringing quantum error correction fairly close to the integration into practical quantum computers. However, to make such an integration viable, further innovations and advances are required in both theoretical research and engineering practice. This Dagstuhl Seminar is intended to be an interaction forum for senior and talented junior researchers, crossing boundaries between classical and quantum coding theory, and related areas of quantum technology and engineering problems. The aim is to exchange on the challenges and the toolsets that emerged in the different areas, towards creating a diverse and inclusive research network, where researchers from different domains can share ideas and knowledge, and inspire each other

Quantum Circuit Design Automation
02. Jun 2024 - 07. Jun 2024 • UBC Okanagan campus in Kelowna, B.C., Kanada
Veranstalter:
Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS)
Zusammenfassung:
This workshop will unite several communities of researchers focused on varying parts of the quantum software stack: the translation of quantum algorithms into instructions a quantum computer can understand (i.e., the process of quantum circuit compilation); the design, optimization, and verification of those circuits; circuit simulation; and the extension and scaling of methods to work with the fault-tolerant (error-corrected) devices of the future. The interaction of researchers at multiple layers of this stack will lead to cross-pollination of ideas that enables co-design of all these elements. Furthermore, the novel methods developed, and improvements in their scaling, will further drive quantum computing research and applications, bringing us closer to the solution of today’s most important problems.
