BIRS Workshop — Compensated Compactness and Applications to Materials

Résumé:
The workshop "Compensated Compactness and Applications to Materials" will bring together experts from the theory of compensated compactness with researchers in material science. Classical compensated compactness is a theory that allows to study the limit of solutions of some partial differential equations with strongly oscillating coefficients. A particular focus is on the very recent developments in the compensated compactness theory involving concentration effects and formation of singularities. These developments have enabled many new results, for instance in the theories of microstructure, shape optimization, dislocation theory, fracture, and plasticity, and they also hold much promise for future applications. To facilitate further breakthroughs, this workshop aims to balance theoretical and more applied talks to give the participants the opportunity to exchange the latest ideas, learn new methods, and start new collaborations.

Differential equations, in particular evolutionary differential equations, are used to model, often with uncanny effectiveness, a vast number of natural and social phenomena. The study of dynamical behaviors of the underlying models, e.g. their stabilities, robustness, bifurcations, and complexities, has become truly essential to understand the phenomena being modeled. It is precisely because of the modeling effectiveness of evolutionary differential equations that their dynamical study is among the fastest growing and most active multidisciplinary research fields today. Not only is the existing theory of dynamics of evolutionary equations closely intertwined with many areas of mathematics, but also the concepts, methods, and paradigms, introduced in the study have become an indispensible component of a multitude of works of more applied nature, in disciplines including chemistry, physics, material science, mechanics, electrical engineering, as well as in the emerging applications of social sciences, not to mention the explosion during the last several decades of applications related to the biological and life sciences. As we push the boundaries of applicability of the existing theory, we routinely discover that new mathematical and computational tools are needed, often symbiotically. To witness, it is widely accepted that an important factor contributing to the explosive growth in studying dynamics of evolutionary differential equations has been the availability of sophisticated and powerful computational tools. Yet, huge systems, systems with multiple time scales, multi-physics models, stochastic differential equations, non-smooth evolutionary problems, still transcend our collective understanding, and exhibit inherent complexities which are requiring the development of sophisticated new modeling and numerical techniques, and whose validity will need to be validated by rigorous mathematics.

We will use nonlinearity naturally arising in many equations in mathematical physics to facilitate the imaging image reconstruction. This breaks with the traditional doctrine that the presence of nonlinearity is an obstacle rather than a tool for understanding differential equations.

The workshop is concerned with geometric objects arising from polynomial equations known as algebraic curves. Such curves have been studied extensively since the 19th century, but recent developments in combinatorics have led to a plethora of new techniques and solutions to major problems in the field. Bringing together experts from classical algebraic geometry and the adjacent combinatorial areas, the workshop aims to bridge the different points of views, identify key open problems in the field, and to examine how progress can be achieved via a combination of old and new tools.

Many important questions in convex geometry are related to the study of sections and projections of convex bodies. For example, can convex bodies be uniquely determined by the size of their sections or projections? What are the largest and smallest sections of the cube? Do convex bodies with smaller sections have smaller volume? A common feature of all these problems is that they are solved with the help of harmonic analysis. The aim of the proposed workshop is to bring together leading experts and young researchers to discuss recent progress in applications of harmonic analysis to convex geometry.
