Workshop MWSW03 — Computational methods for multiple scattering

Résumé:
The accurate and efficient numerical modelling of waves interacting with complex scattering geometries is crucial for a wide range of engineering and science applications, including electromagnetic/photonic/acoustic/elastodynamic imaging and device/material design. The multiple scattering regime — i.e. wave scattering scenarios in which there are multiple interactions — includes strong scattering by multiple obstacles, periodic structures, media with variable refractive index, waveguides, random media, and non-convex obstacles. This brings special computational challenges since perturbative and one-way approximations do not apply, and ray methods usually suffer from exponential proliferation. Conventional PDE solvers are also inadequate, particularly at high frequencies, and/or when the propagation domain is highly heterogeneous (containing many scatterers, a highly variable refractive index or geometric singularities).

The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers working on computational methods for multiple scattering and to explore possible connections and common challenges between the different communities involved.

Waves on the surface of a fluid, or on the interface between different fluids are ubiquitous phenomena with wide importance in technology, science and the environment. Over the past fifty years the advent of numerical computations have meant that fundamental questions about waves have proven to be fertile ground for numerical approaches, and additionally rigorous theory, numerical and asymptotic methods have intersected to furnish a vibrant interdisciplinary ground for fundamental research.

This workshop will bring together mathematicians and other scientists working on numerical, asymptotic and rigorous aspects on a variety of free surface flows.

Workshop RNTW03 — New tomographic methods using particles

This workshop will include experts on a wide range of emerging tomographic techniques using particles including muon and muon scattering tomography, proton tomography, electron tomography, emission tomography including emission tomography for radiographic dose estimation, Compton scattering tomography and neutron diffraction tomography. Most of these tomographic modalities are non-linear and involve measurement of more than intensities. They thus require sophisticated mathematical techniques for successful imaging and the goal is to match these emerging methods with mathematicians studying integral geometry, non-Abelian tomography, Bayesian inverse problems, regularisation and related areas in an attempt to spur interdisciplinary collaboration.

Workshop MWSW04 — Multiple scattering in engineering and applied sciences

In many cases, multiple scattering models and methods are designed with a specific application in mind, typically in engineering or applied sciences. The workshop will bring together researchers applying multiple scattering to solve real-world problems, so as to identify common knowledge gaps and emerging applications. The application areas include among others mechanics and thermal physics, interaction of electromagnetic waves with matter and acoustics. Special focus will be placed on both structured materials and metamaterials for which semi-analytic approach to multiple scattering is pivotal. These kinds of materials allow waves to be manipulated on demand. The main goal of the workshop is bringing together experts working in this field to foster the dissemination and sharing of ideas that could lead to innovative solutions and pave the way for the development of devices for various applications in the broad field of Wave Physics.

This workshop will bring together researchers from biophysics/mechanobiology experiment, soft active matter theory and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. There will be a mixture of pedagogical overview talks and research talks. The meeting aims to bring together mathematicians and statistical physicists specializing in the fundamental properties of fluctuations and response in nonequilibrium states with theoretical researchers in soft matter working on active matter and biological physics and experimental researchers in biology and biophysics. We expect to enable new collaborations and cross-fertilization of ideas. In short, we expect that understanding the living world will provide challenges that will stimulate new fundamental thinking in statistical physics while current research in this field will help to structure our ever-expanding knowledge of living matter as a nonequilibrium dynamical system.

The "Complex analysis: techniques, applications and computations" (CAT) programme of 2019 brought together participants from diverse geographical and scientific communities to develop and apply complex analysis to a host of problems from areas including pure and applied mathematics, physics, engineering, and medicine. The Follow-On workshop is an opportunity to consolidate the achievements of the CAT programme and enhance its impact. Its first main goal will be to assess the progress that has taken place in the key thematic areas of the programme. The second main goal will be to formulate new open problems for the community to address in subsequent years. Finally, the workshop will also provide an opportunity to establish new collaborations. The workshop will mirror the structure of the original thematic programme and will cover the following three main overlapping areas: (1) Techniques of complex analysis, including, but not limited to, connections with classical, harmonic and asymptotic analysis, new transform methods, advances in the Wiener–Hopf and Riemann–Hilbert problems; (2) Applications of complex analysis, highlighting connections with diverse areas of modern physics and applied sciences as well as engineering; and n(3) computational complex analysis, including a range of topics bridging mathematical foundations of various numerical techniques and their software implementations.

Workshop MMVW02 — Collective Behaviour

Modelling collective group movement in animal ecology and cell biology has, over the years, followed two relatively parallel modelling paths. Most prevalent for the former are what one might define as discrete level models, whereby computational constructs are used to keep track of the spatio-temporal dynamics of each individual in a group. Problems in the latter, cell biology, have been tackled mostly by continuous models whereby the details of the individuals are neglected, in favour of a description of the entire population through, e.g. a density function. However, more recently hybrid agent-based/population models have gained increasing usage.

As the overall aim of the workshop is to create an overarching modelling framework with which to interpret common empirical features, the exchange of ideas and techniques from the different communities is an invaluable opportunity to move forward and at the same to delineate the boundaries of applicability of the different approaches in collective movement research.

There is a growing trend, and demand, for scientific and evidence-based decision-making supporting defence and security at the heart of government and industry. Mathematics is fundamental to these two domains, providing a framework for understanding and solving the varied and complex problems faced, and to model systems and scenarios. As mathematicians we are in an ideal position to be at the forefront of this requirement and are able to take a step back and assimilate everything into a common language. One of the biggest challenges for mathematicians is the ubiquity of the discipline – that the same maths can be used to solve multiple problems. This means that it may not be immediately obvious to know what branch of mathematics is best suited to addressing a particular problem and it’s not always straightforward to find a forum where you can get feedback on the different mathematical techniques that could be applied. This conference aims to bring together a wide variety of participants and topics applying a variety of mathematical methods with defence and security applications.

INMS Workshop — MoDiS 2023: Modelling Diffusive Systems

The aim of this workshop is to bring together experts from different communities to cover the investigation of diffusive systems from several viewpoints: analytically, combining methods and techniques from Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) and dynamical systems to derive and analyse mathematical models for the applied phenomena; numerically, reviewing the most recent techniques and software for the computation of bifurcation diagrams and continuation with respect to the systems’ parameters; and, last but not least, from the applied — in particular biological — viewpoint: a constant exchange of knowledge between the theoretical investigations and the experimental data is in fact crucial in order to advance the research in this area. Our speakers will illustrate the most recent advancements in these fields, and foster the creation of new research directions with a concluding description of three open research questions aimed at colleagues working in fields different from their own. This will allow researchers with different backgrounds to learn ultimate techniques, connect with experts from various areas, and collaborate with fellow participants to produce new, cutting-edge research.

The study of interactions among living entities covers broad scientific domains, ranging from molecules and cells through individual organisms and groups to species, populations and communities. Common to all domains is the need to quantify the presumed interactions at the relevant spatial and temporal scales. While no formal theory exists in the literature, there exist different approaches that aim to construct a mechanistic representation of how individuals interact with each other as well as how to measure such interactions, but in most cases such approaches are specific to the problem at hand. The common factor among the existing approaches is their intention to represent the sequential nature of how organisms interact, first acquiring information from their surroundings, then processing that information and subsequently selecting a movement response.

By cross-fertilising different ideas and techniques in animal ecology and cell biology we aim to gain a more realistic perspective on measurement and representation of organism interactions, revisiting existing concepts, and permitting new discoveries and insights.

Workshop MMVW04 — Modelling non-Markov Movement Processes

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together scientists interested in different areas of complex movement in a biological context, from field research, to data analysis, to theoretical modelling. In particular, the focus will be on complex movement beyond the Markov property, such as memory-dependent animal foraging processes, spatial avoidance due to past deposition of animal scent or resource depletion, and directed motion in neutrophils. Despite its ubiquity, the mathematical difficulty in dealing with history dependence has hampered the study of non-Markov movement processes. Past empirical limitations are also responsible for the lack of a general theory to describe history dependent movement processes, as detection of features that would distinguish between Markov and non-Markov model predictions were not attainable. Currently, movement data may reach unprecedented resolution, and there is a renewed interest in developing non-Markov movement models, exemplified by recent theoretical studies to devise general prescriptions to simulate non-Markov stochastic processes.
