This is an online workshop (using Zoom) aimed at all teachers of physics - not just those who consider themselves to be specialists. Student teachers, trainee teachers, aspiring teachers, retired teachers, technicians also all very welcome. The interactive workshop will consider sustainability and how to embed this engaging topic into physics learning KS3 - KS5. The main focus will be on the physics of air-source heat pumps and how different processes in this important new technology fit into the curriculum. New ideas for investigative and practical work will be considered and wider issues of sustainable energy discussed.

The UK is blessed with a significant tidal energy resource. Often it is the vertical rise and fall of the water that is both best understood and envisaged to be harnessed as a source of energy. In fact regions between high and low waters can, under the right conditions, be subjected to significant horizontal tidal streams or currents such that thrust forces per unit area are tens of times greater than the strongest winds. Harnessing this kinetic energy in our tides has been the subject of more significant research and development over the past 4 decades. In recent years the technology has both made great strides forth and also stagnated due to a number of issues. Most recently it appears that free stream tidal energy might have a further chance to prove itself and work towards generating a significant amount of (completely predictable) electricity to the electrical grid. This talk will cover the technology development & operational issues of freestream tidal energy and give a frank and open appraisal of the barriers to mass deployment.

Sustainability is one of the most important paths towards tackling climate change and building a better future for our society and environment. The IAEA conference – often dubbed the Olympics of fusion – is the leading international platform for sharing the results of research and development efforts in the drive to bring the world low-carbon energy from fusion. In 2023, it will be the UK’s turn to host the IAEA Fusion Energy Conference, for the first time since the 1980s. We look forward to welcoming this prestigious event to London and to showcasing our progress in bringing fusion to the grid.
