The primary aim of this Workshop is to bring together world-leading theory and experimental researchers studying organismal growth and development through quantitative approaches. A notable feature is in the diversity of subjects-it is not focused on a particular sub-field of development. Rather, it is unified by the approaches taken to study development. It will provide a forum where intellectual connections can be established among the diverse participants studying a broad spectrum of problems and models, lowering the barriers to interdisciplinary research.
Themen:
Broadly, the topics of interest will include self-organisation of multicellular systems, tissue-scale mechanics, the complex dynamics of gene expression during development, and the network perspective of gene regulation.

The goal is to explore avenues for examining cell state transitions across multiple scales. We will consider tools and technologies, model systems, and theoretical frameworks. The intimate setting of the meeting will foster discussion, exchange of ideas, and initiation of new collaborations.

This meeting will be the fifth iteration of this highly successful Journal Meeting, which has been running every two years since 2014 (including virtually in 2020). Over the past four events, we have brought together a diverse group of researchers (both in terms of topic and demographics) united in their desire to better understand human development, and to do so using human cells and tissues. Since the first meeting in 2014, we have witnessed huge advances in the field, driven largely by technological advances such as organoid culture and single cell sequencing, and have seen significant expansion in the range of questions that can be now addressed using human systems. It is therefore more important than ever to provide a forum for researchers to come together and discuss the latest advances, and remaining challenges, in the field.

The 4th biennial Sainsbury Laboratory Symposium (#SLS22) will take place at the Sainsbury Laboratory, Cambridge, UK over three days (21-23 September 2022) and will be delivered in a hybrid format. Delegates may choose to attend in-person or online. The Symposium will foster a dialogue between researchers working on regulatory dynamics from different fields across the plant and animal kingdoms and consist of talks, poster sessions and daytime and evening social and networking events. Our goal is to create a welcoming, safe, collaborative, inclusive and respectful symposium environment by promoting diversity of attendance and inclusivity of participation of underrepresented scientists.

From Physics to Function

With the increased appreciation that physical forces are key regulators of all biological processes, new emerging scientific communities are forming around topics such as physical forces in cancer and mechanobiology in different biological processes ranging from development to homeostasis. Currently, there exists somewhat of a void between the biologists and the physicists working on these topics. The interests are shared but the communication between the two crowds is limited by the lack of a common language. On one hand, there are vast advances being made in generating tuneable materials, versatile biomimetic polymers and artificial 3D scaffolds, and these are linked to advanced modelling and understanding of the physical parameters of these systems. However, the biological questions addressed may have limited physiological relevance and lack careful consideration of the burning questions in biology. On the other side, the cell biologists/developmental biologists/cancer biologists lack contact with the physicists, modellers and material scientists, and are unable to connect their biology to the relevant physical principles and available methodology. They lack understanding of the theory behind tissue mechanics and the engineering skills to investigate them. They would benefit massively from closer collaboration with the “other crowd”. Therefore, the main goal of this Workshop is to foster integration between physics and biology across scales, approaches, and participant backgrounds. The Workshop will be entail “biology-physics duets” – talks given jointly by two currently collaborating speakers, with different backgrounds. These will be accompanied by “solo” talks and relevant round table discussions on how physics and biology can be better integrated.

In this Workshop, we aim to bring together computational, cell, and evolutionary biologists to help address this major challenge of integrative cell biology. We strongly believe that actively seeking out collaboration across fields will be crucial to push cell biology beyond the boundaries of individual species into a truly comparative discipline anchored to predictive models. In turn, computational biologists will have an opportunity to guide and influence the next phase of big data generation in cell biology. Together, in deciphering the rules that underpin the relationship between the genome and the cell that encases it, we will better understand both evolution and cellular function.

Toxic Metabolites in the Biology of Ageing and Cancer

This Workshop will focus on the biology of toxic metabolites in the ageing process, stem cells and cancer. Specific emphasis will be placed on how metabolites that carry carbonyls (such as aldehydes and ketones) damage stem and cancer cells. A particular area will focus on endogenous aldehydes (such as acteladehyde, formaldehyde and methyl-gyoxal), the enzymes that remove them [aldehyde dehydrogenases (Aldh) and functionally related glutathione-based enzymes such as Adh5 and Glo-1/2]. Further, we will consider how human genetic variation can contribute to metabolite sensitivity, and how mutations in cancer genomes in toxic metabolism pathways can be exploited for therapy.
