2 Day Workshop at BIRS — Scientific Workshop for Graduate Students in Mathematical Biology
03 avr 2020 - 05 avr 2020 • Banff, Alberta, Canada
Résumé:
The interaction between evolution and population dynamics is a key concern under the pressures of climate change. There is already evidence that some species are evolving adaptations such as earlier emergence, and dispersal into new habitats following range shifts. Other species, however, seem much less able to adapt. For conservation purposes, it is critically imprtant that we understand how the evolutionary pressures exerted by climate change and the mathematical dynamics of interacting populations lead to survival or extinction of species. The mathematical study of these processes, eco-evolutionary dynamics, is an area of active research, and a talented researcher from the Centre National de Recherche Scientifique in France will be coming to present his work in this area, as well as an extended lecture on the mathematical techniques used in the study of eco-evolutionary models. The workshop is aimed chiefly at graduate students in mathematical biology, who will gain skills in eco-evolutionary dynamics, and a wider network of peers and mentors through the research discussions at the workshop. In addition, a policy expert will hold give an interactive presentation showing the process whereby mathematical work can be included into policy, thus empowering students to make even greater contributions to society through their research.

Spring Graduate School on Polyhedral Products in Geometric Group Theory
20 mai 2020 - 22 mai 2020 • Montreal, Canada
Organisateur:
The Fields Institute
Résumé:
Two mini-courses will be given by experts in Geometric Group Theory. These are designed to give graduate students and early career researchers a research level perspective on how and why Polyhedral Products appear in Geometric Group Theory, thereby enabling the participants to engage fully in the workshop that immediately follows.

2020 School on Column Generation
26 mai 2020 - 29 mai 2020 • Montréal (Quebec), Canada
Résumé:
The 2020 School on Column Generation is the fourth of its kind (after Paris, France, in 2018 and 2014, Darmstadt, Germany, in 2010 and Montréal, Canada, in 2006) and aims at teaching the state-of-the-art in column generation and branch-and-price to advanced students and PhD students but also to practitioners and researchers interested. The lectures will be given by renowned scientists in the field. The participants will have the opportunity to present their own research or application problems in order to foster discussions and create a "real workshop atmosphere".
Sujets:
Basic theory (decompositions, reformulations, convexification, discretization, etc.), vehicle routing and crew scheduling applications, shortest path subproblems, column generation heuristics, master problem issues (stabilization, aggregation), branching and cutting

Research in Teams at BIRS — Random motions in Markov and semi-Markov environments and their applications
07 jui 2020 - 14 jui 2020 • Banff, Alberta, Canada
Organisateur:
Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS)
Résumé:
The Banff International Research Station will host the "Random motions in Markov and semi-Markov environments and their applications" workshop in Banff from June 7, 2020 to June 14, 2020. The workshop is devoted to the study of random motions (for example, telegraph or transport models) in Markov and semi-Markov environments and their applications. Applications include, in particular, modelling of stock price in finance via the exponential of random telegraph process. Analogue of the Black-Scholes formula for European call option price will be obtained in this case. Another application will be considered to obtain generalization of Black-76 formula in commodity markets by regarding Markov or semi-Markov modulated volatility in the forward pricing of energy markets' products.
