The scope of this conference is to provide an interdisciplinary platform for discussions of novel developments and trends in the field of biological and bio-inspired surfaces. Topics will encompass functional mechanisms as well as the characterization of biological surfaces with different functionalities: adhesion, friction, wear-resistance, wettability, photonics, etc. Based on this knowledge, a further key topic will be the consideration of structural principles in biological systems as potential models for the generation of novel technical surfaces and their implementations into engineering systems.

In this summer school the basics of the preparation of nanostructures, the resulting physical properties, their optoelectronic applications, and theoretical methods will be reviewed. A range of characterization techniques with a special emphasis on spectroscopy will be introduced. The summer school provides an ideal forum for Master and PhD students to become acquainted with the topic and to initiate further discussions. The participants are expected to present their own work in the form of posters and are given the chance to introduce it also in the form of flash presentations. We will invite leading experts in nanostructure preparation, spectroscopy, electrical transport, and related fields.

ISSPIC or International Symposium on Small Particles and Inorganic Clusters is an established biennial conference series on fundamental science of finite size effects and the possibility of controlling the properties of material at the nanometer scale, organized since 1976. The conference topics typically include atomic and molecular clusters and their assemblies, supported and free-standing Nanostructures and -particles, and other nanometer-scale systems.

This Beilstein Nanotechnology Symposium is organized Shelley A. Claridge, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, and Liberato Manna, Italian Institute of Technology, Genoa.
