Beilstein Nanotechnology Symposium — Nanoinformatics: Spanning Scales, Systems and Solutions

Résumé:
Nanoinformatics (as an offshoot of chemoinformatics) refers to the combination of physical chemistry and materials theory with computer science’s in silico approaches to address key questions such as the prediction of materials functionality, fate in the environment, toxicity or therapeutic ability, recyclability and more. As the properties of nanomaterials themselves span several scales, from electronic, atomistic, mesoscopic to continuum, and are highly dynamic and context dependent (i.e., interact with and are transformed by their surroundings as well as impacting on their surroundings), they introduce new challenges for naming, describing and representing, and require the combination of physics-based and data-driven modelling approaches. This symposium will highlight current advances towards prediction of nanomaterials interactions with living systems and the environment. The symposium will cover the whole range of nanoinformatics, from construction of in silico nanomaterials for simulation of their interactions with biomolecules, membranes, cells and organisms and integration into complex product matrices, through development of nanomaterials descriptors and their use in prediction of nanomaterials exposure, mechanisms of biological activity, hazard and risk assessment, to integration of models for different end-points including sustainability, recyclability, insurance, and mechanistic considerations into IATA, meta-models or multi-criteria optimisation models to simultaneously balance materials functionality, safety and sustainability.

This Gordon Research Conference will showcase advances and challenges in the development, modeling, characterization, and manufacturing of nanoscale materials for energy conversion and storage. Understanding and controlling the nanoscale structure and properties of materials is increasingly important for enabling maximal performance in energy devices. This meeting will take an in-depth look at energy and fuel generation (photovoltaics, catalysis, solar fuels, thermoelectrics) and energy storage (batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells), with specific focus on advanced functionalities enabled by control over the nanoscale structure and properties of materials. The meeting will foster interactions among scientists from different energy disciplines and at different stages in their careers. In addition to application-specific sessions, cross-cutting sessions will include cutting edge measurement and diagnostics, as well as data-driven design and characterization of nanomaterials for energy. An emphasis on new and unpublished work will make this conference a premier platform for scientific exchange on the future developments of nanomaterials for energy technology.

IOCN 2023 is dedicated to providing a forum for exchanging the latest research results and sharing advanced research methods on nanomaterials. Nanomaterials are materials with typical-size features in the lower nanometer size range and characteristic mesoscopic properties—for example, quantum size effects. These properties make them attractive objects of fundamental research and potential new applications. Many of the things we have been using for a long time contain nanosize components, though we are frequently not aware of them. For instance, mimicking nature’s nanotech is becoming a big business. Many research groups around the world have turned to geckos and mussels in order to prepare adhesives that bind to dry and wet surfaces alike. Numerous technologies in the modern world rely on nanostructures, often inspired by evolution in the natural world. However, there is much unexploited potential left to explore.

Nanoparticle assembly is a hierarchical approach to functional materials. It operates at the mesoscale where elementary building blocks still feel their atomic nature and can profit from quantum function but at the same time are flexible enough in shape and interaction to permit high structural complexity. The realization of nanoparticle assemblies requires the convergence of and communication among several scientific disciplines: chemistry for synthesis, materials science for characterization, chemical engineering for up-scaling, and physics for a theoretical description and quantum phenomena. The goal of the conference will be to provide a coherent view of the current state of the field, bringing together researchers with different expertise and background. It should catalyze the development of new methods, both theoretical, computational and experimental, and define the basic science in this field. A focus will be recent developments but also a look forward: What should be the focus for the next decade and beyond? What are they key physics concepts that need to be developed and from where will the new game-changing technological advances emerge?

Résumé:
During the past four years, new phenomena and material systems kept emerging. The artificially designed 2D materials have quickly become an important playground of this field, where correlation and topology are deeply intertwined. In addition to the twisted graphene systems, new topological and strongly correlated states are discovered also in twisted TMD layers recently bringing interesting new problems to the field. Another new territory for the topological and correlated systems is the non-equilibrium systems, where new topological states have been proposed and discovered in non-hermitian and Floquet systems. Impressive progress has also been made in more traditional bulk crystal materials, where new systems with quantum anomalous Hall states and axion insulators have been discovered and topological classification for magnetic crystals has been accomplished. Now, it is time to gather again and share the latest progresses and ideas.
