Joint IAEA/NEA/EC-JRC Workshop on the Taxonomy and Related Terminology of Fuel Cycles for Molten Salt Reactors
03 nov 2025 - 07 nov 2025 • IAEA Headquarters, Vienna, Autriche
Organisateur:
This international workshop is organised by the NEA, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC).
Résumé:
This international workshop is organised by the NEA, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC). Its goal is to collaboratively develop a comprehensive taxonomy of fuel-cycle options for molten salt reactor (MSR) technologies, covering chloride and fluoride-based salts, and to establish a clear, unified terminology for communicating these complex processes. The effort builds on the MSR taxonomy from the 2023 IAEA‑TRS‑489 report on molten salt reactor technology. By combining the strengths of all three organizations, the workshop seeks to optimise technical expertise, ultimately advancing the roadmap toward MSR deployment and support in policy development.

Enhancing Preparedness for Recovery: From Exercise to Action through INEX-6 Insights
03 nov 2025 - 07 nov 2025 • Fontenay-aux-Roses, France
Organisateur:
OECD Nuclear Energy Agency
Résumé:
Experience from past nuclear and radiological accidents has shown that the consequences of a radiological emergency can be profound and long lasting, affecting public health, the environment, food systems, infrastructure and social trust. Recognising this, the Committee on Radiological Protection and Public Health (CRPPH) Expert Group on Recovery Management (EGRM), in its report “Building a Framework for Post Nuclear Accident Recovery Preparedness, National Level Guidance,” emphasised the need for countries to establish dedicated recovery frameworks that extend beyond initial emergency response plans, and expressed the lack of international exercises covering recovery. This upcoming workshop, organized by the NEA and hosted by the Autorité de Sûreté Nucléaire et de Radioprotection (ASNR), will present key outcomes and lessons learned from the INEX-6 evaluation and define concrete next steps to strengthen both national and international recovery preparedness.

Organisateur:
OECD Nuclear Energy Agency
Résumé:
The Expert Group on SMRs (EGSMR) of the Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI) addresses safety challenges and develops a scientific basis which supports safety demonstration of the advanced and innovative methodologies and technologies used for SMRs. In a comprehensive report published in 2023, the EGSMR identified SMR safety related gaps of knowledge, cross cutting safety issues and provided recommendations for co-operative activities. Since then, the CSNI, through its working groups and joint undertakings, has launched several activities to make progress on the safety assessment of SMRs. More generally, cross cutting safety topics have recently been investigated deeper through national and multilateral initiatives. These include the reliability of passive systems, transportability, application of defense-in-depth principle for innovative designs, remote/autonomous operation, multi-unit/module probabilistic safety assessment, human and organizational factors, emergency planning zones, fuel safety and more.

Bridging Law and Technology: International Workshop for the Deployment of Small Modular Reactors
08 dec 2025 - 10 dec 2025 • Stockholm, Suède
Organisateur:
The 2025 Bridging Law and Technology Workshop is co-organised by the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) and the Swedish Government.
Résumé:
Nationally, countries are advancing the technical development, legislative and regulatory adaptation, and safety and environmental reviews of small modular reactors (SMRs). However, the development and deployment of SMRs have raised many new legal questions on both the application of existing laws to new technologies and the use of new frameworks and standards adapted to new technologies. There remains a need to address unresolved legal and regulatory questions for the unique characteristics of SMRs, so that those countries that wish to develop and deploy SMRs can integrate them into national energy portfolios. In September 2024, NEA Director-General William D. Magwood, IV, and Swedish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Business and Industry Ebba Busch announced that Sweden will host a Workshop designed to analyse the legal frameworks needed for the adoption of innovative nuclear technologies and applications.

Passive Systems Performance and Reliability Workshop
30 mar 2026 - 01 avr 2026 • Paris, France
Organisateur:
OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), in collaboration with the European project EASI-SMR
Résumé:
The OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), in collaboration with the European project EASI-SMR, is pleased to announce the International Workshop on Passive Systems Performance and Reliability, to be held in Paris, France, from 30 March to 1 April 2026. This workshop is organised under the auspices of the NEA Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI), by its Working Group on Risk Assessment (WGRISK) and Working Group on Analysis and Management of Accidents (WGAMA), in collaboration with the EASI-SMR project, co-funded by the Euratom Research and Training Programme.

Passive safety systems are central to the safety concepts of many advanced reactor designs, including Small modular reactors (SMRs) and micro-reactors. Despite their widespread use, consensus is lacking regarding modelling approaches, reliability assessment, and crediting methods in safety analyses. This workshop builds on the 2024 NEA Status Report on Reliability of Thermal-Hydraulic Passive Systems and supports the goals of the Ensuring Assessment of Safety Innovations for SMR (EASI-SMR project), which addresses key safety challenges in light-water SMRs through a structured R&D framework.

TINCE’26 — Technological Innovations in Nuclear Civil Engineering
20 mai 2026 - 22 mai 2026 • Tours, France
Résumé:
With the current global focus on climate change and the energy crisis, nuclear energy is playing an increasingly important role in achieving deep decarbonization. This was recognized at COP28 in Dubai (2023), where nuclear energy was identified as a major low-emission technology. As of 2024, there are approximately 60 nuclear reactors under construction worldwide and around 110 additional planned reactors, most of which are based on traditional water-cooled technologies. Furthermore, new reactor types such as Small Modular Reactors (SMR) and Advanced Modular Reactors (AMR) are gaining traction, demanding innovations in ground and civil structures.
Sujets:
TINCE’26 will focus on the interplay between design and construction, an evolving area that leverages advances in interoperability between BIM and structural calculations. The development of environmentally friendly materials with lower carbon emissions is a key priority. Additionally, the conference will address long-term operational challenges, like structural health monitoring and the development of tools for managing aging effects in nuclear facilities. These include new sensing techniques, non-destructive testing methods, and digital twins to assess and predict asset conditions.
