Index Theory and Complex Geometry
01 Jun 2020 - 26 Jun 2020 • Singapore, Singapore
Organizer:
Institute for Mathematical Sciences/National University of Singapore
Abstract:
Interactions between people working in Index Theory and Complex Geometry are increasing. One of the reasons is that although researchers use different tools and techniques, their studies have profound connections and are understandable to people from both sides. Sharing experiences and techniques is an opportunity for them to accelerate collaboration works. Index Theory and Complex Geometry recently both have spectacular developments. In this program, we plan to dig out more materials on complex geometry side of global analysis led by recent development on geometric hypoelliptic Laplacians.

Causal Inference with Big Data
29 Jun 2020 - 10 Jul 2020 • Singapore, Singapore
Organizer:
Institute for Mathematical Sciences/National University of Singapore
Abstract:
Causal inference is the study of quantifying whether a treatment, policy, or an intervention, denoted as A, has a causal effect on an outcome interest, denoted as Y. What distinguishes a causal effect of A on Y from an associative effect of A on Y, say by computing the correlation between A and Y, is that under a causal effect, intervening on the treatment A leads to changes in the outcome Y. Hence, a causal effect is a stronger notion of a relationship between A and Y than an associative effect.

Topics at the Interface of Low Dimensional Group Actions and Geometric Structures
04 Jan 2021 - 15 Jan 2021 • Singapore, Singapore
Organizer:
Institute for Mathematical Sciences/National University of Singapore
Abstract:
In this two-week program, we explore the interactions between geometric group theory, geometric structures and Anosov representations. Geometric group theory, in the broadest sense, seeks to understand the structure of groups through their actions on objects with geometric meaning. Conversely, one can take a known group and attempt to understand all its geometrically meaningful actions. One natural notion that arises in this setting is an Anosov representation, which came about as an attempt to describe what it means for the action of a discrete group on a homogeneous space to be geometrically well behaved. Also, in his Erlangen program, Felix Klein viewed geometry as a space which is invariant under a group of transformations. This gave rise to the notion of a geometric structure, which gives yet another notion of a geometrically meaningful action of a group on a homogeneous space.

The Statistical Physics of Continuum Particle Systems with Strong Interactions
18 Jan 2021 - 28 Jan 2021 • Singapore, Singapore
Organizer:
Institute for Mathematical Sciences/National University of Singapore
Abstract:
This is a two-week program gathering mathematicians and physicists interested in the statistical physics of strongly correlated and long range random particle systems. These particle systems include Gibbs point processes such as Coulomb gases, determinantal point process, eigenvalues of random matrices, etc. They are linked to mathematical long-standing challenges such as the crystallization and best packing conjectures among others. One aspect that we want to put forward in this meeting is that the pioneering tools from classical statistical mechanics à la Ruelle, Lanford, Lebowitz may not have been used enough for the study of these particle systems yet.

International Workshop on Reduced Order Methods
17 May 2021 - 21 May 2021 • Singapore, Singapore
Organizer:
Institute for Mathematical Sciences/National University of Singapore
Abstract:
This is a one-week program gathering mathematicians, engineers, and scientists interested in reduced order models and methods (ROMs) for systems of partial differential equations. The general idea behind ROMs is to derive a low-dimensional model from a high-dimensional model, by integrating techniques from data science, modeling, and simulation, in order to obtain accurate and reliable results at greatly reduced computational costs.
