PDADS — The 1st International Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Algorithms for Decision Sciences

Welcome to the First International Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Algorithms for Decision Sciences (PDADS), 2021. The goal of this workshop is to create a forum for scientists, engineers and practitioners to share new results and collaborate on ideas at the intersection of parallel and distributed algorithms, decision sciences and combinatorial optimization. There is a growing recognition that a variety of science and engineering use-cases can benefit from parallel and distributed optimization frameworks that can deliver real-time decision-making capabilities. Especially in this age of ever-increasing powerful computing technologies, optimization-driven decision science problems that were otherwise considered computationally prohibitive for integration within scientific and engineering applications, especially those needing real-time decision-making capabilities, are now becoming possible. This workshop will focus on the theory, design, development and deployment of parallel and distributed algorithms for faster and more accurate solutions of different types of optimization problems that arise within the broader purview of the decision sciences.

The International Conference on Parallel Processing (ICPP) is one of the oldest continuously running computer science conferences in parallel computing in the world. It is a premier forum for researchers, scientists, and practitioners in academia, industry, and government to present their latest research findings in all aspects of the field. This year will be the 50th year of ICPP. ICPP2021 will be held at the US Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago, USA and special events will be held to celebrate the 50th anniversary at the conference. ICPP2021 is in cooperation with ACM SIGHPC. We invite everyone to participate in the conference and its celebration.

This symposium is dedicated to the understanding and characterization of workloads that run on all types of computing systems. New applications and programming paradigms continue to emerge rapidly as the diversity and performance of computers increase. On one hand, improvements in computing technology are usually based on a solid understanding and analysis of existing workloads. On the other hand, computing workloads evolve and change with advances in microarchitecture, compilers, programming languages, and networking communication technologies. Whether they are smart phones and deeply embedded systems at the low end or massively parallel systems at the high end, the design of future computing machines can be significantly improved if we understand the characteristics of the workloads that are expected to run on them. This symposium, sponsored by IEEE Computer Society and the Technical Committee on Computer Architecture, will focus on characterizing and understanding emerging applications in consumer, commercial and scientific computing.
