Combinatorial and DG-Algebra Techniques for Free Resolutions
08 Jun 2020 - 19 Jun 2020 • Tianjin, China
Organizer:
Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI)
Abstract:
The two topics, combinatorial theory of free resolutions and differential graded algebra techniques in homological algebra, each have a long and rich history in commutative algebra and its applications to algebraic geometry. Free resolutions are at the center of much of the study in the field and these two approaches give powerful tools for their study and their application to other problems. Neither of these topics is generally covered in graduate courses. Furthermore, recent developments have exhibited exciting interplay between the two subjects. The purpose of the school is to introduce the graduate students to these subjects and these new developments. The school will consist of two lectures each day and carefully planned problem sessions designed to reinforce the foundational material and to give them a chance to experiment with problems involving the interplay between the two subjects.

Algebraic Curves
29 Jun 2020 - 10 Jul 2020 • Hainan, China
Organizer:
Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI)
Abstract:
The theory of algebraic curves, arguably the oldest branch of algebraic geometry, has seen major developments in recent years, for example in the study of syzygies, and around questions about moduli spaces and Hilbert schemes of curves. The theory is rich in research activity and unsolved problems. There is an encyclopedic work by Arbarello, Cornalba, Griffiths and Harris, but there is no modern text that could be used as a textbook and that goes beyond the basics of the theory. We have embarked on a project to write a book at roughly the level of the wonderful book on complex algebraic surfaces by Arnaud Beauville.

ICCA12 — 12th International Conference on Clifford Algebras and Their Applications in Mathematical Physics
03 Aug 2020 - 07 Aug 2020 • Hefei, Anhui, China
Organizer:
University of Science and Technology of China (USTC)
Abstract:
This conference is the next edition in a long line of conferences starting in 1986 at the University of Canterbury, UK. This series of international conferences aims at bringing together leading scientists and young researchers in the field of Clifford algebras and their various applications in mathematics, physics, engineering and other applied sciences. The English mathematician and philosopher William Kingdon Clifford (1845-1879) is best remembered for his geometric algebras, nowadays better known in mathematics as Clifford algebras, named so in his honour, but he also contributed significantly to other branches of mathematics, especially geometry.

Workshop — Geometry and Physics of Quantum Toroidal Algebra
06 Sep 2020 - 11 Sep 2020 • Hangzhou, China
Organizer:
Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (IASM) in Hangzhou, China, and the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) in Banff, Canada
Abstract:
The theories of rational/trigonometric/elliptic functions were developed as functions over plane/cylinder/torus, respectively, before the 20th century. Among them, the theory of elliptic functions is most interesting, and it can be understood as the parent theory of the rest. During the 20th century, the same rational/trigonometric/elliptic trichotomy has been also found in integrable systems, algebras and cohomology groups. Like the theory of functions, recent development reveals that the relationship among integrable system, algebra, geometry, and physics becomes most profound at elliptic level. In particular, Lie algebras (rational) are promoted to affine Lie algebras (trigonometric) and toroidal Lie algebras (elliptic). The workshop aims at investigating quantum versions of toroidal Lie algebras, called quantum toroidal algebras.

Workshop — Modular Forms in Number Theory and Physics
20 Sep 2020 - 25 Sep 2020 • Hangzhou, China
Organizer:
Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (IASM) in Hangzhou, China, and the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) in Banff, Canada
Abstract:
Modular forms have been one of the central topics in number theory for more a century and they continue to experience a wide range of applications throughout mathematics nowadays. Different incarnations of modularity, known as quasi-modular forms, quantum modular forms, Jacobi forms and Siegel modular forms regularly show up in physics topics such as mirror symmetry, topological quantum field theory, Gromov-Witten invariants, conformal field theory, Calabi-Yau manifolds. The principal goal of the proposed conference is to assess the role of various modular forms in recent developments in number theory, geometry and string theory.

Workshop — Topological Data Analytic Applications of Persistent Cohomology
04 Oct 2020 - 09 Oct 2020 • Hangzhou, China
Organizer:
Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (IASM) in Hangzhou, China, and the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) in Banff, Canada
Abstract:
Inspired by the success of persistent homology, the purpose of the present workshop is to replicate this success by developing robust, statistically integrated versions of other constructions from classical algebraic topology. In particular, we are interested in persistent versions of cohomology theory, that combine the robustness of persistence with the various sophisticated algebraic structures associated with cohomology.

Workshop — Poisson Geometry and Artin-Schelter Regular Algebras
11 Oct 2020 - 16 Oct 2020 • Hangzhou, China
Organizer:
Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (IASM) in Hangzhou, China, and the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) in Banff, Canada
Abstract:
This workshop will tackle some fundamental open questions about Artin-Schelter regular algebras, in particular, elliptic algebras, and their associated Poisson structures. In particular, it will focus on the correspondence between the representations of elliptic algebras and the symplectic leaves of their semi-classical limits, as well as on the relationship between the deformation theory of Artin-Schelter regular algebras and that of the derived category or the A-infinity-category of related projective schemes. This workshop brings together leading experts in algebra and geometry from around the world to identify and attack these outstanding problems and to collaborate for future breakthroughs.
