Courbure négative et courbure négative ou nulle en théorie des groupes — Aspects of Non-Positive and Negative Curvature in Group Theory
17 Jun 2019 - 21 Jun 2019 • CIRM – Luminy, France
Organizer:
Centre International de Rencontres Mathématiques (CIRM)
Abstract:
This conference will focus on applications of non-positive and negative curvature to geometric group theory. The most well known examples of this are δ-hyperbolic and CAT(0)-groups. More recently, some of the techniques that have been used to study these groups have been imported to study groups that have some features of negative curvature but aren’t themselves negatively curved. For example, the mapping class group is neither δ-hyperbolic nor CAT(0) but major progress has been obtained in on our understanding of this group by studying its action on the δ-hyperbolic curve complex. A related group is Out(Fn), the group of automorphisms of the rank n free group and similar program is underway to understand it. More generally, large classes of groups have been identified that have certain features of negative curvature and this has been exploited to prove results which were heretofore only known in special cases.

IHES summer school on aspects of geometric group theory
08 Jul 2019 - 19 Jul 2019 • Bures-sur-Yvette, France
Abstract:
A group is a mathematical object encoding natural notions of symmetries and transformations. Geometric group theory is an area in mathematics devoted to the study of discrete groups by exploring connections between algebraic properties of such groups and topological and geometric properties of spaces on which these groups act.

As a distinct area, geometric group theory is relatively new, and became an identifiable branch of mathematics in the early 1990's. Geometric group theory closely interacts with low-dimensional topology, hyperbolic geometry, Lie groups and homogeneous spaces, algebraic topology, computational group theory, and differential geometry. There are also substantial connections with complexity theory, mathematical logic, dynamical systems, probability theory, K-theory, and other areas of mathematics.

Topics:
This is an IHES Summer School, organized in partnership with the Clay Mathematical Institute, and the support of the Société Générale, the FMJH, the IUF, the ANR GAMME, the project Jeunes Géomètres and the ERC.

Immeubles et grassmaniennes affines — Buildings and Affine Grassmannians
26 Aug 2019 - 06 Sep 2019 • CIRM – Luminy, France
Organizer:
Centre International de Rencontres Mathématiques (CIRM)
Abstract:
The aim of the summer school is to gather young researchers arising from a quite wide mathematical area in order to build knowledge in two complementary fundamental theories. The first one is Bruhat-Tits theory which deals with the Euclidean buildings and integral models of reductive algebraic groups defined over a local field, the second one is the theory of Affine Grassmannians which are geometric objects arising from Representation Theory.
