Illustrating Mathematics: Reunion/Expansion
11 Aug 2025 - 15 Aug 2025 • Providence, RI, United States
Organizer:
Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics, Brown University, Providence, RI (ICERM)
Abstract:
Illustration reveals the hidden structures of mathematics, broadening access to its inherent beauty and pushing the boundaries of research. Here two disciplines are interwoven: on the one hand, the art and craft of presenting ideas and on the other hand, the creativity and scholarship of creating mathematics. This program facilitates research and collaboration on these topics, both between and within these groups, and to promote professional support and recognition both for illustration and for building the infrastructure needed for its creation. We invite both returning and new members to the Illustrating Mathematics community to this workshop, which will bring together mathematicians, and practitioners from the arts.

AIM workshop — MetaMath: Modeling the mathematical sciences community using mathematics, statistics, and data science
08 Dec 2025 - 12 Dec 2025 • American Institute of Mathematics, Pasadena, California, United States
Abstract:
This workshop, sponsored by AIM and the NSF, will bring together researchers from across the mathematical sciences to apply a broad range of mathematical, statistical, and data science tools to study the mathematical sciences community. The workshop will include both researchers currently working in this area, as well as researchers new to the field interested in applying their expertise to this area.
Topics:
Developing MetaMath as an example of using mathematical, statistical, and computational methods to investigate the mathematical sciences community itself. Catalyzing research collaborations aimed at using data to answer questions about the mathematical sciences community. Exploring the variety of mathematical, statistical, and data science techniques that can be applied to gain insight into the systems and structure of the mathematical sciences community.

Nonlinear Waves: From Theoretical and Computational Advances to Experimental Observations
27 Apr 2026 - 01 May 2026 • Providence, United States
Organizer:
ICERM/Brown University
Abstract:
The palette of coherent structures in nonlinear media is very rich extending from the classic 1D ones like pulses, fronts, kinks, breathers, (dark/bright) solitons, to higher dimensional ones like vortices, vortex rings and knots, spiral waves and more exotic ones like skyrmions and monopoles. These structures are highly interesting in their own right, but also play a crucial role as building blocks towards understanding more complicated and realistic features of the full underlying systems. The methodologies of studying this field vary from techniques taken from the fields of Mathematical Analysis and Differential Equations to Numerical Analytical and Machine Learning techniques, while Experiments always play a crucial role in touching base with respect to physical reality. This conference aims to bring together people both from the analytical and the computational worlds along with experimental practitioners to discuss the state-of-the-art and emergent challenges of the field of nonlinear waves and coherent structures. It will accordingly seek to establish a mutually beneficial dialogue which could provide valuable insights in different directions, setting the stage towards future investigations.
