This seminar provides a comprehensive overview of hot rolling steel strip and plate. The course covers fundamentals, metallurgical and quality requirements, equipment, rolling theory, control, rolls, temperature control, measurement, safety and new technology. A new module on maintenance and reliability has been included by popular demand. Attendees will leave this course with a better understanding of the basic metallurgy involved; the different types of products and their attributes; the types of rolling mills and equipment; rolling theory; the latest technologies involved in hot rolling; safety aspects; production measures; maintenance practices and much more. There will be opportunities to discuss issues and solve problems during this interactive course. A full-day parallel session will be devoted to discrete plate and Steckel rolling, and tours will be offered of sheet and plate rolling operations.

Abstract:
Secondary steelmaking refractory maintenance is vital to both productivity and safety in a meltshop and caster. It is important for those involved to have a thorough understanding of the basic concepts of refractory system design. Consultants, suppliers and recognized industry experts have developed a curriculum to educate attendees on the following topics: refractory raw material selection; properties of refractories, application and limitations of refractories; theory and application of insulation; design and application of stir plugs, lances and slidegates; free opens, refractory handling, installation and pre-heating; ladle secondary steelmaking — LMF; and casting requirements and wear mechanisms. Presentations will provide data from steelmaking operations, and attendees will benefit from the practical experience of the presenters, including the application of the latest tools and techniques being used. Open discussions will allow participants to gather additional information and network with attendees and instructors.

Abstract:
This two-day program provides a detailed review of one of the most important raw materials used in the steel industry – water. Water is an essential element for every steel manufacturing process and utility operation. This program will review water chemistry fundamentals and application demands with a focus on cooling water. Cooling tower system design, operation and maintenance will be featured, as well as microbiological fouling and control methods in cooling water loops. In addition, cooling tower and National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Systems permitting flexibility will be discussed. The seminar will also focus on physical treatment methods such as reverse osmosis, oil removal, and a recent innovation on macrofouling and zebra mussel treatment. A specific focus on water conservation and reuse (with case studies) will be presented along with a fresh look at the feasibility of zero liquid discharge treatment concepts. Sessions will include a combination of technical presentations with case studies to provide real examples.

This is the eighth in a series of symposia covering scrap substitutes and alternative ironmaking, which originated with a highly successful meeting in Myrtle Beach, S.C., USA, in 1993. This meeting was initiated by the Advanced Technology Committee, which belonged to the Process Technology Division of the Iron & Steel Society (an AIST predecessor). This symposium, which is international in scope and participation, is associated with a high level of activity in research, process and project development, plant construction, and start-up of direct reduction and alternative ironmaking processes. This symposium will focus on the following areas: successful projects/processes, the challenges of struggling processes and those still under development including new approaches, and use of products.

Advanced high-strength sheet steels (AHSS) are of increasing importance, particularly to the automotive industry, where their application enables reduced fuel consumption while guaranteeing passive safety. The scope of the conference is to bring together the international community to highlight state-of-the-art research and development pertaining to AHSS. The conference will focus on the latest developments in dual phase, twinning induced plasticity, martensitic, quenched and partitioned, medium manganese steels, other third-generation AHSS concepts and hot stamped steels along with recent experiences with industrial implementation and end-user application performance. A broad distribution of presentation topics is scheduled from international and domestic speakers from industry as well as academia. The conference is the latest installment in a series of product specific conferences following the AHSS symposia in Winter Park, Colo., in 2004, Orlando, Fla., in 2008 and Vail, Colo., in 2013.

As-rolled steel applications include wind towers, offshore structures, shipbuilding, and abrasion-resistant steels used in construction and machinery. Heat-treated steel applications include tank cars, pressure vessels, and quenching and partitioning to enhance steel product toughness and wear resistance.
